Kalpen Modi Returns To White House Job After Leaving To Film 'Harold & Kumar' Sequel

November 15, 2010 5:59 PM

ABC's Michael Falcone reports:

After a brief hiatus to film a sequel to the popular "Harold & Kumar" movie, the actor, Kalpen Modi (also known as Kal Penn), has returned to a job in the White House.

"The White House is pleased to have Kalpen Modi join the Office of Public Engagement as an Associate Director," White House spokesman Shin Inouye said in a statement on Monday. "While OPE works collectively on conducting outreach to the American public and various organizations, he will be the point person for those in the Arts, Youth, and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities."

Monday was his first day of work.

Modi, who may be best known for his role as "Kumar" on the big screen left a similar job in the Office of Public Engagement over the summer. He originally joined the Obama White House in July 2009 as a liaison to the Asian American and arts communities.

Modi hinted that he was returning to the political arena with appearances on behalf of Democrats and President Obama at rallies across the country in the closing weeks of the 2010 election cycle. In October, both Modi and the president stumped for California Sen. Barbara Boxer at an event at the University of Southern California. He spent a day with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid touring college campuses around Nevada to energize young voters and appeared at other events in Florida and Illinois.

Modi, who played a starring role in the film, "The Namesake" and was also a regular on the television medical drama, "House," spent months campaigning for Obama in 2008, focusing his efforts on turning out the the youth vote. His character was written off "House" in order for him to take the job in Washington in 2009.

The actor turned political aide quit his White House job to fulfill a prior commitment to film a third "Harold & Kumar" movie -- "A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas" -- scheduled for release in 2011.

During his previous stint in the Obama administration, Modi took part in a variety of educational and cultural programs and wrote several posts on the White House's official blog. While he was filming this summer, Modi worked in his personal capacity to promote the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and the passage of the DREAM Act. He also met with artists, arts businesses and youth entrepreneurs in the Detroit area where the "Harold & Kumar" movie was shot. He also visited U.S. troops in Hawaii, South Korea and the Korean Demilitarized Zone on a USO tour in August.

Why is this guy all of a sudden being written about with his given name? Are you trying to bury the story by hiding it from search engines?

I find it remarkably coincidental that up until now, no one had ever heard of his given name. Now you choose to call him that.

Exactly why is this happening?

Does Kalpen have a security clearance? Top secret or secret?

@Miss Marple,

Kalpen Modi is Kal Penn's legal and real name. He has always used his full name when dealing with White House and political affairs. The only time he goes by the name Kal Penn is when he is acting; it is his stage name. The reason you may not have seen it is due to the fact that most articles still call him Kal Penn because it is more recognizable. That's it.

No one is trying to hide anything from search engines.

Just what we need. Further politicalization of the arts.

Hey, the boy toy is back!

There are rumors by Hillbuzz that he has a special relationship with the top dog, Bo. Did he change his name to dispel those rumors?

First Kal Penn is weirdly hired out of the blue to work in the White House despite not having any qualifications or relatable experience.

He was given a made-up, do-nothing job…not VP because that went to Biden…but something like “Deputy Director of Giving Obama Kisses”.

Then, bizarrely, Penn and Obama seem to have had a tiff, which I imagine involved a slap fight and hair pulling.

Obama was mad at him for a while.

Mysteriously, Penn then got mugged near the gay bars at DuPont Circle and his cell phone was taken from him…it seems that cell might have had messages or photos Obama wanted.

Then, for several months, report after report came out about Obama being depressed. Even prank calls to Justin Beiber stopped making him giggle.

And now, Penn is coming back to the White House, right when Obama is down on his luck and nursing wounds from his disastrous midterms.

@John: Are you really searching that hard for excuses to complain about the present administration? Please sir.. I believe it's time for you to take a little breather and grab a soda. If it matters that much to you, the office that Mr. Modi currently works out of has been around since President Nixon was in office, and it's their job to interact with interest groups.

I can't tell you how bizarre that hiring was. Famous = qualified. Well, not-that-famous = qualified. I think he's extremely lame in the stuff that he does. Why does the other guy do another one? That's the question. He played the new Sulu for crying out loud.

Not only that, Harold and Kumar wasn't a good film even in that low-brow comedy way. It was basically written by two white guys who wrote jokes about how lame white people are.

I think the moral of the film is that the audience needs to be drugged out to
enjoy it.

A Hollyweird liaison? What the hell. When did Hollyweird become something more than a group of entertainers. Now, someone remind me which party is up the butt of the rich?

There is a claim that Mr. Penn is Mr. Obama's homosexual lover. Can anyone substantiate that?
