Retired Gen. James Jones, who was Commandant of the United States Marine Corps from 1999 to 2003, has been nominated to the board of directors at Chevron Corp.

Jones, who was Supreme Allied Commander in Europe and Commander of the United States European Command from January 2003 until February 2007, will stand for election at Chevron's annual stockholders meeting May 28. If he's elected, the San Ramon oil company's board will increase from 14 to 15 members.

Jones already works on the board at the Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA), Invacare Corp. (NYSE: IVC) and Cross Match Technologies.

He's been president and CEO of the Institute for 21st Century Energy in Washington, D.C., for the last year. It's a think tank affiliated with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Jones was commissioned in the Marine Corps in January 1967 and was a platoon and company commander in Vietnam.

Chevron (NYSE: CVX) is led by CEO David O'Reilly.
