S'pore to enhance tourism sector

SINGAPORE: Minister for Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang said Singapore needs to maintain its competitive edge in the tourism sector.

Speaking at the grand opening of Southeast Asia's first Universal Studios at Resorts World Sentosa, Mr Lim said the country will continue to offer novel experiences for visitors and grow its calendar of world class events.

"In the coming years, we will continue to enhance Singapore's tourism landscape with a strong pipeline of new developments like Gardens by the Bay, River Safari, the International Cruise Terminal as well as National Art Gallery," Mr Lim said.

He said apart from building on infrastructure, another key priority is to develop capabilities within the industry.

Mr Lim added Sentosa's development into a premier leisure and lifestyle destination is the result of a decade of careful planning.

Visitorship to the island nearly tripled from about six million in 2009 to nearly 18 million last year.

Since its soft launch in March last year, the theme park has attracted more than two million visitors.

Mr Lim said Universal Studios Singapore has been a key addition to the island, drawing both local and international visitors.
