Labasa Island

Labasa Located in the north of Vanua Levu is Labasa, the largest and most populated town on the island. Lying some 5 km inland near the banks of the Labasa River, this town is the administrative center of western Vanua Levu. A bustling trade and service township, Labasa has been a center for Fiji's sugar industry since the colonial era, with the Labasa sugar mill opening here in 1894. In 2003 a cyclone nearly devastated the area with many farmers still struggling to restore their livelihoods.

There are no real tourist attractions in Labasa itself, with the exception of the Wasavula Ceremonial Site found in the southern part of town. Most of the main shops and stores in Labasa are located on Nasekula Road, along with the three banks found in town as well as the post office and bus stop. Air Fiji, Sun Air, Beachcomber Cruises and Patterson Brothers Shipping all have offices on Nasekula Road as well.

There are only a few hotels and accommodations in Labasa, most of which are quite affordable and located in the center of town. One of the best places to stay at on a budget is the Labasa Riverview Private Hotel on Nadawa Street, near the police station, while if you are looking for more upscale accommodations; the Grand Eastern Hotel is probably your best choice.

In Labasa there are quite a few restaurants that serve great Indian and Chinese food. V. Rana's Snack Bar is a wonderful Indian eatery, while for some excellent Chinese food head to the Oriental Bar and Restaurant. Unfortunately there is no real nightlife in Labasa, with just the Elite Cinema and the bar at the Grand Eastern Hotel the best places hang out after dark.

The Wasavula Ceremonial Site on Vunimoli Road is the best place see in town. A sacred monolith, various cannibalistic ceremonies were held here. If you are panning on visiting Wasavula you need to ask permission and present a sevusevu or gift before you enter.
