Construction

Construction of Legacy Way is underway at the western worksite, on the northern side of the Western Motorway in Toowong

During this initial stage of construction, works will include:

  • installing concrete barriers along the Western Freeway and Mt Coot-tha Road
  • installing noise walls along the boundary of  Brisbane Botanic Gardens
  • realigning the shared user path along Mt Coot-tha Road
  • site establishment
  • constructing site access and internal roads
  • installing site buildings.

The majority of works will take place from 6.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. If any out-of-hours work is required, Transcity will directly notify residents in the vicinity of the worksite.

Construction of Legacy Way began in April 2011 and continue until December 2014.

When complete, Legacy Way will include two parallel tunnels, approximately 4.3km long and 12.4m in diameter, each containing two lanes for traffic as well as approximately 300m of on and off ramps.

  • Legacy Way will be built using two tunnel boring machines, each will be more than 90m in length and feature a 12.4m circular rotating cutter head.
  • More than two million tonnes of spoil and rock will be removed during tunnel construction.
  • The deepest point of the tunnel is 40m below the surface.
  • The tunnel lining will be made up of more than 35,000 "rings", each of which is made up of 9 pre-cast segments.
  • More than 1200 concrete piles will be included in the project.
  • More than 185,000m2 of asphalt will be laid across the whole project (inside the tunnels and on surface roads).
  • More than 100 jet fans will be installed in the tunnels as part of the ventilation system.
  • The water in the pond at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot-tha will be equivalent to nine Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Tunnel boring machines

Construction of the parallel tunnels between the Centenary Motorway and Inner City Bypass (ICB) will primarily be achieved using tunnel boring machines (TBMs).

The TBMs that will be used to construct Legacy Way have 12.4m circular rotating cutter heads to bore a consistent profile through rock. The TBMs will also progressively install tunnel lining "rings", each made up of 12 pre-cast concrete segments. The rings will help minimise groundwater entering the tunnel.
