Guthrie Quist and Wild Stallions

"What is Wild Stallions? Maybe it's lightning runs up the fret board or the thundering of drums that shake the earth like the hammer of the Gods. Maybe it's the trumpet of vocals that seek to awaken the mountains from their slumber. What is Wild Stallions? Wild Stallions is the musical odyssey of four people overcome by the ancient power of music, the power to unite and transform. What is Wild Stallions? Wild Stallions is freedom. Not freedom the way politicians use it, but the freedom that the soul yearns for. Are you a Wild Stallion?" - Guthrie Quist

Guthrie Weston Quist's LA Band, Wild Stallions, recently completed a 12 date tour of the Northwest opening for Marshall Tucker, Bering Straits and Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night at the epic Rockin' the Rivers Festival in Three Forks and Headlining Hot August Nights in Libby. The tour included legendary Montana Clubs including Sean Kelley's in Missoula, Garden Bar in Bigfork, Bullwhackers in Helena and the infamous Silver Dollar Bar in Butte.

Wild Stallions is a Red-Hot, Good-time Party Band featuring Guthrie Quist on lead vocals and acoustic and electric guitars, David Hayes on lead and slide guitar and vocals, Pat McKenna on drums and the only filly in the group, Guthrie's sister, Halladay Rose Quist on bass guitar and vocals. Wild Stallions play Rock and Roll as it is meant to be played. Quist's vocal range and dynamics are unforgettable and his original songs are electrifying and thought provoking. San Diego native David Hayes, or "Surfer Dave", is co-founder of the band and brings his soulful lead and slide guitar talents to the group that lead many to recall the days of Duane Allman and the Allman Brothers Band. Pat McKenna, like Quist, attends Pepperdine on a Music Scholarship for drums and is a Seattle, Washington native. As any music fan knows there are competent drummers, and there are epic drummers, Pat is one of the latter.

Guthrie grew up on a ranch in Montana in a rambling old house built in the early 1900's. His mom raised horses and his Dad played music and there was no cable TV or video games in the Quist household. Instead there was a music room and a recording studio. His dad had an extensive collection of well-worn acoustic, electric, bass and steel guitars and Guthrie and his sister, Halladay, fell asleep most nights listening to their dad writing songs in the music room. There was always a lot of physical labor to be done on the ranch and from an early age, Guthrie remembers being given a choice - stay home and fix fences or go on the road with his dad, performing and selling merchandise. Life on the road won out every time and Guthrie has been performing since he was ten years old at every county fair and outdoor festival in the Northwest. Upon high school graduation, Quist used his voice to open doors and flew down to LA to audition for both the UCLA and Pepperdine University Music Departments. The lure of the Ocean was strong and so he accepted a Music (Voice) Scholarship at Pepperdine University in Malibu. Quist, now a Senior majoring in Creative Writing and Marketing at Pepperdine, has become a fixture on LA's ever changing, late night music scene, performing at the historic Malibu Inn and even appearing on MTV's Sisqo's shakedown.

In a recent interview from San Diego, where the band is rehearsing for their next tour, Quist talked about his musical influences and the direction he envisions for his band. "I have always been a mental voyager, a researcher and a bit of a musical savant. The 60's and 70's were a fertile time for the music scene. Musicians kept a finger on the pulse of the public consciousness of the times. Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan became the voice of a generation and took music beyond the realm of pure entertainment and into the Shamanic realms of the sacred. This created a musical renaissance and an awareness of living in the moment - creating an atmosphere of peace and harmony and fun that our current generation is struggling to recreate. In the mid-nineties, Nirvana showed how great music can still rise above prefabricated pop and stir the public consciousness. Artists like Dave Matthews and Ben Harper are bringing back this awareness and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are teaching a generation to let go of their inhibitions and get down and party! The goal of my music is to cover both bases. "
