Stephan Bonnar vs. Kyle Kingsbury added to UFC 139 in San Jose

Stephan Bonnar will fight at UFC 139, but it won't be against Josh Koscheck.

After the light heavyweight and welterweight clashed over Bonnar's "Trash Talkin Kids" business venture, rumors of a potential middleweight fight between the two UFC vets gained steam.

Today, though, officials announced that Bonnar (13-7 MMA, 7-6 UFC) instead will fight fellow light heavyweight Kyle Kingsbury (11-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) at the November show.

UFC 139 takes place Nov. 19 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. The night's main card, including an expected heavyweight title fight between champion Cain Velasquez and top contender Junior Dos Santos, airs on pay-per-view.

It's not clear if Bonnar vs. Kingsbury will be part of the broadcast. However, as MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) first reported earlier today, the event will get a "UFC Prelims" special on Spike TV, and Bonnar vs. Kingsbury is an early candidate for one of the two televised slots.

Bonnar, who hasn't fought in 2011 due to injuries, looks to extend his win streak to three fights following victories over Krzysztof Soszynski (TKO) and Igor Pokrajac (decision). Prior to the wins, Bonnar was stuck in a three-fight losing streak (and overall 2-5 skid), though UFC president Dana White said that "The Ultimate Fighter 1" runner-up and fan favorite never will be released from the organization.

Kingsbury, a "TUF 8" cast member, quietly goes for his fifth straight UFC victory. After suffering a decision loss to Tom Lawlor at the TUF 8 Finale, the fighter since has posted consecutive victories over Razak Al-Hassan, Jarred Hamman, Ricardo Romero and Fabio Maldonado. The Hamman and Maldonado wins both earned "Fight of the Night" honors.

I would who will replace Bonnar when he gets injured?

Nikomania on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:24 pm ET
Bonnar wins this via UD.  Then Bonnar should get someone with a good name.  Like Tito or Franklin.

Yogafire on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:31 pm ET
completely agree...i was hoping for Bonnar/Tito because it seems like a fun fight. Still, this is a good match-up. Bonnar wins TKO rd 2

coreymb on Aug 23, 2011 at 9:55 pm ET
I don't think Bonnar could perform well at 185. He'd have to cut off a leg. Bonnar himself said he would fight Kos at 185, but he'd have an incredible hard time making the cut.

jtown2 on Aug 23, 2011 at 5:28 pm ET
that's a fun fight...

sanchov on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:03 pm ET
yeah, i think kyle showed some holes in his game last fight, hopefully bonnar can capitalize on that

Cannibal_kiddo on Aug 23, 2011 at 5:30 pm ET
man i was wanting to see Kos fight bonnar and Leben is already booked so we cant get that grudge match either. oh well i still hope Kos moves up to MW maybe give him Lawlor or maia

TheSkilledWon on Aug 23, 2011 at 5:40 pm ET
what about Koscheck v. Belfort? Vitory took no damage in his fight...who wouldnt wanna see Vitor obliterate Osh Kosh Bagosh Check?

Nikomania on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:26 pm ET
I like it.

Cannibal_kiddo on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:38 pm ET
i like Kos and i think he could take just about anyone at mw including Silva

PaydayKidJT on Aug 23, 2011 at 7:27 pm ET
I definitely agree with you. I think 90% of people on major MMA sites go by what their heart tells them (which is I hate Josh Koscheck, therefore he must suck) rather than using their minds, or any shred of logic for that matter. I agree that Koscheck would probably beat grind out any fighter in that division. About beating Silva, he certainly has the tools, he has a better ground game in my opinion than Sonnen and is a more decorated wrestler, and has far better striking than Chael too, and most people seem to forget that Chael almost KOd Silva in the first round with a left hook.

getajobgrouch on Aug 23, 2011 at 7:45 pm ET
No. He didn't almost KO him.

TheSkilledWon on Aug 23, 2011 at 9:47 pm ET
whats this myth about Koschecks amazing striking ability? he has a looping overhand right and thats about it...and No, Chael did not almost KO Silva unless you count any punch that lands as an almost KO...

Cannibal_kiddo on Aug 23, 2011 at 11:00 pm ET
Chael did rock Silva twice in the 1st round but i wouldnst say he almost Ko'd him, but did wobble him and almost drop him. Kos has good striking people look past his striking because he mainly relies on his overhand right, but look at his fights with Alves, lylte, Paulo, Johnson, Hazlett and Yoshida he displayed great striking in all those fights

getajobgrouch on Aug 24, 2011 at 12:17 am ET
he displayed good striking against paulo? he got kod in like a minute in a half. i do agree his striking is over looked but using that fight isnt the best example

kevinnail on Aug 23, 2011 at 5:59 pm ET
lawlor is fighting weidman and maia is figh santiago

CutthroatCourier on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:12 pm ET
I'm actually glad to hear that Bonnar isn't fighting Kos. From all the comments I've heard on here from junkies who've attended UFC expo's over the years, they've all had consistent remarks that Bonnar is absolutely HUGE for a LHW. No matter how bad he'd wanna smash Kos IMO I just think it'd be too radical of a weight cut for Bonnar to not gas out and give that punk Kos another reason to run his mouth.

I do however REALLY like the idea that another junkie posted in regards to feeding Kos to Belfort.

DANA if you ever read this $#!T that fight would be awesome!!!!

WHMoff33 on Aug 23, 2011 at 5:33 pm ET
If this doesn't get Main Card, it had better get the Spike Card, and that's all I've gotta say about that!

albundy87114 on Aug 23, 2011 at 5:35 pm ET
I may pay for this fight.  I like Bonnar.  I think he and Kos will kiss and make up

Melvinj0 on Aug 23, 2011 at 5:35 pm ET
Hell ya, two guys who are gunna go to war. Kingsbury is a monster of a LHW but Bonnar is one TOUGH SOB. FOTN for sure.

TKDTKD on Aug 23, 2011 at 5:36 pm ET
Go Bonnar. Kingsbury is overrated. Maldonado beat his ass.

Mattilham on Aug 23, 2011 at 5:37 pm ET
FOTN

Alexcny on Aug 23, 2011 at 5:46 pm ET
Bonnar all day in this fight.  Not that impressed with Kingsbury so far.

ReadBetweenTheLines on Aug 23, 2011 at 5:47 pm ET
Who does this guy in the picture think he: Right Said Fred "I'm too sexy for my shirt too sexy, yeaaa." Kyle Kingsbury looks like Right Said Fred ha ha.

irunthis on Aug 23, 2011 at 5:48 pm ET
I have no idea how Kingsbury has 4 straight victories, I was not impressed with his showing against Maldonado, who really is a 185'er. I'm not trying to bash him, I have nothing but respect for any MMA fighter, I just wasn't impressed by him. I think Bonnar will work him in every aspect of the game.

retrofitting123 on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:07 pm ET
this sucks , i was really looking foward to bonnar and kos, i think it would have been competitive

BanLAYnPray on Aug 24, 2011 at 4:57 am ET
Kyle kingsbury has the best hook up around now that he has been with Victor Conte,  you know the Balco the man who supplied barry bonds with all his designer (UNDETECTABLE) steroids.  I ask everyone who has any doubt to look up what Kingsbury looked like during his stint on TUF and then shortly after he hooked up with Victor Conte right after Victor got out of prison for the Bonds federal steroid case and compare it to what he looks like now.  IMO opinion Conte was looking for someone to introduce him to the MMA community of fighters since he is banned from having any contact with anyone in major league baseball.  What better place to go look for steroid customers but the only sport that doesn't do random steroid testing.  But the stuff Conte has is cutting edge far far ahead of any testing that is being done to any MMA fighters.  I wouldn't doubt one bit if Victor Conte is supplying most of the MMA fighters on PED's.

BanLAYnPray on Aug 24, 2011 at 5:00 am ET
Bonnar is too well rounded for Kingsbury.  Bonnar by TKO early round 3

dustydixie on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:08 pm ET
Agreed with everything..........up until your last sentence.

Kingsbury is overrated, but he will take Bonnar out. Unfortunate, but it will happen.

mcpeepants232003 on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:13 pm ET
how the heck is Maldonado a 185er? He was offered a spot on Ufc 133 vs Rich(when Lil Nog got injured) but couldn't take it because he was almost 240 lbs. Maldonado walks around anywhere from 230-240. That would be an awfully big mw.

TKDTKD on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:16 pm ET
A lot of it's fat. He could easily lose some weight and make 185. He's the Fedor of the division.

VenomXXR on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:22 pm ET
I wouldn't go that far, but he's definitely got some fat and should be fighting at 185. He has a great chin and great hands, but I wonder how good he can actually be, because he doesn't seem like the kind to adapt.

themuffinman on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:20 pm ET
It's not going to happen for awhile, but I would really like to see Koscheck versus Sonnen.

thomson212 on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:36 pm ET
bonnars fighting the lowest guys in the div, hopefully he puts kyle away and gets himself back up the ladder!!

zachalyse on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:41 pm ET
To all the comments wanting Kos to fight Belfor or Sonnen, That would never happen. Both those guys have recently fought for the MW belt and are tops in the division. No way they are going to push a top division fighter onto a guys first fight when he moves up in division. Just like when Anderson moved up. They gave him a non contender to test the waters. I say Kos will get someone like Steve Cantwell or Tom Lawlor.

BanLAYnPray on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:47 pm ET
Since when is Cantwell at 185 or did i miss something.  Cantwell is a big dude  i doubt he could get anywhere close to 185 and if he did he would look worse than Irvin did

zachalyse on Aug 23, 2011 at 7:33 pm ET
UFC.com has Cantwell in the MW division at 185. So yes, you missed something.

BanLAYnPray on Aug 24, 2011 at 2:30 am ET
Damn you are right about Cantwell moving to middleweight but noone has seen him make MW yet.  i just hope he doesn't look like Irvin.  Cantwell was not a small LHW by any stretch of the imagination.  3 losses in row and a promise to move down to MW is only thing keeping him in the UFC for now sounds to me like.

TheSkilledWon on Aug 23, 2011 at 9:54 pm ET
of course they will...you dont think Koscheck gets an immediate top 10 challenger in the divison? Kos just fought for a title as well...hes held in the same regard as a Belfort or Sonnen...hes considered an upper echelon fighter...not to mention hes a fresh face in the MW division, a division where anderson has murdered everyone...BJ moved up and was given an immediate title shot...Marquardt dropped down and was set to fight a top challenger at WW...not to mention lawlor is already booked...cantwell is already booked...kos will certainly be fighting a top 10 MW in his next fight if he does indeed fight at 185...its pretty much a guarentee

Dominoe on Aug 23, 2011 at 8:15 pm ET
Koscheck vs Sakara might be an entertaining fight or maybe Wanderlei vs Kosh as well if Wandy doesn't retire.

shut_the_Fitch_up on Aug 23, 2011 at 11:45 pm ET
I hope Wandi fights again.  Barely tested the waters at Mw, even with a quality win against Bisping.

shut_the_Fitch_up on Aug 23, 2011 at 8:31 pm ET
This would have been a huge win for Bonnar, could have even put him in top 10 contention if he could've finished it quick.

Kingsbury 2nd rnd TKO.

SJD1982 on Aug 23, 2011 at 9:00 pm ET
Just glad Bonnar is back in action. I see him taking a hard earned decision. Koscheck on the other hand is going to get (rumored) Ed Herman... which I feel may turn out being a loss for Koscheck. He'll be rusty, and Herman has looked great in his 2 fights back from injury. Credeur and Noke aren't cupcakes, (Noke fighting Hector Lombard to a draw) and also hadn't been submitted in 8 or 9 years.  I'd rather see Koscheck fight the loser of Penn/Condit. Either one of those fights I'd love to see. Maybe the Hughes/Sanchez loser, or perhaps the Kampmann/Story winner. I just feel that Kos still hs a ton of value in the Welterweight division. Bonnar fighting Kos, while highly interesting as it might be, would be difficult for Bonnar. Unless the catchweight was 198 or above, that would be the only way. Kos probably walks around at 187-194, so its nothing for him. If Bonnar wins this, he should get either the Rua/Griffin loser.... maybe Tito... or the Bader/Brillz winner.

rw1060 on Aug 23, 2011 at 10:43 pm ET
Why do some people seem to have such a problem with Kingsbury? He's entertaining in the cage.

fitchedinthemouth on Aug 24, 2011 at 8:33 am ET
Agreed not sure why there is so much hate, and I think his cardio is much better then most think its amazing that he took some of the body shots that he did.

DarthVader23 on Aug 24, 2011 at 9:44 am ET
Super entertaining!!  Love guys that don't mind trading.  This fight could be amazing honestly.

endo135 on Aug 25, 2011 at 4:03 am ET
Kyle Kingsbury is yet another example of an oversized up-and-comer at LHW - just like Alexander Gustafsson, Phil Davis and, of course, Jon Jones.

This is the future of the LHW division - a future that will not include Rashad after he gets utterly dismantled and totally embarrassed by Jones, presumably at UFC 141 in Sin City on New Year's Eve.
