Many Americans Losing Sleep Over Their Electronics

Posted on 07 March 2011 by staff

Washington (HealthKnowItAll) – Results of a new study show that many Americans are not getting the recommended amount of sleep, thanks in large part to technology.

In a world where the internet, cell phones and television sets play such an important part of our lives, it is not far fetched to believe that it is these devices that are responsible for us sleeping less at night.

We are supposed to be getting up to seven hours of uninterupted sleep a night but with pagers going off, texting alerts, video games and late night television, getting the required amount of sleep is not as easy as it used to be.

Researchers from the National Sleep Foundation carried out a study in which they asked people how much technology kept them up at night, with the results proving without a doubt that we can blame electronics for sleeping less.

Up to 95% of people who responded stated that they use an electronic device within an hour of going to bed, while two thirds of people stated that they were not getting the required seven hours of sleep a night thanks to their various electronics.

Sleeping soundly during the night is very important as it leads to better productivity during the day, thus those who are not getting the required amount of sleep should really try to do so, even if it means turning off the cell phone or going to bed a little earlier.
