THE RATINGS RACE: Week 46

November 7, 2011

Opinion

Alan, Myf and Adam are saying goodbye.

Only two more weeks to go

To find out what the next decade will be like, go to A feat of futurology.

From Saturday's chart, it looks like the Rockwiz fans still have not discovered that it's a new series on Saturday nights. Are we surprised that the stoners are slow on the uptake?

In the week ending November 12, the prime time audience shares went like this: Seven 17.7 per cent; all Pay TV 16.4; Nine 15.3 per cent; Ten 11.1; ABC1 11.6; SBS1 3.9; 7TWO 3.7; GO! 3.3; 7mate 3.2; Eleven 3.4; Gem 2.4; ONE 1.6; ABC2 2.0; SBS2 0.7; ABCnews24 0.6; ABC3 0.6.

Channel Ten's decision to move The Simpsons to ELEVEN has done it no good at all. Look at our chart to see how low it has sunk -- even further than Neighbours. Meanwhile Spicks and Specks is thriving as it glides towards an easeful death. And the ABC will be delighted with the next-to-penultimate episode of The Slap, which will pick up another 300,000 in repeats, timeshifting and online. Not bad for a drama in which everyone is either bad or mad.

So Australia's got talent and the x-factor. But has it got brains? One answer to the question might be -- yes, look at how the audience for A Current Affair has shrunk. But then again, we're still watching The Celebrity Apprentice.

When Media Watch tops Junior MasterChef, it's tata Channel Ten. So far nobody has speculated that it might be the absence of Matt Preston that is causing Junior MasterChef to slide down the toilet, so let us be the first. JM has now entered the arthouse market normally occupied by the ABC. Meanwhile Celebrity Apprentice is flourishing. Look at the chart for last night and weep that Australia prefers Pauline and Warwick to Anna and George.

It's been a terrible year for the station that was once the Tyrannosaurus Rex of television, but on Sunday night Helen Mirren made Nine (briefly) a winner again with a star turn on 60 Minutes.

Nine may have won the ratings war last night but they certainly didn't win me. Could they get even more annoying? Is it really necessary to advertise a program immediately before starting it?
Last night I tuned in to watch Frozen Planet. They showed snippets of it before it started with annoying voice over and even more annoying stupid music. I mean, how dumb do they think we are? If you tune in to watch a program you know what is coming up you don't need to be enticed and treated like an idiot.

And another thing. What happend to "Person of Interest"? That has disappeared as I feared it would. Now I will have to chase it around the schedule or download.

I don't know why I ever bother with Nine. They are worse than useless.

Now I've had my rant I shall shut up.

By "Arthouse", TM, I assume you mean "little-watched"? Artful it aint.

Anyone believing Nine's story that it hasn't paid BaliBoy for an interview? Not me. I'd bet my televison he's locked in. Not like I'll be needing it next year if 2011's programming is anything to go by.

Is the ratings year over yet? Did it ever begin? Still waiting for Nine to screen 'Episodes' with Matt Le Blac etc.

Looks like next year will be a big one for Ten. I think they should replace Matt Preston, George & Gary with Lord Monkton, Andrew Bolt & Steve Price and get it over with. And get their news fresh off the satellite from FOX.

I'm over 2011. At the stage now where I drink coffee to calm my nerves.

Breathe, Em, Breathe. Wikipedia tells me that episode 6 of Person of Interest ("Witness") broadcast in the US on 3 November but the next episode ("Foe") doesn't broadcast until 17 November. The problem is actually that Nein is doing too good a job of fast-tracking the show, meaning that they have to allow for any gaps in the US scheduling.

That would explain the kiddie MC contestants appearing on The Project last night. Desperate.

I flicked across to Ten to watch Terra Nova on Sunday and was surprised to see J Masterchef was still on. Either I'm not watching Ten and its digital off-shoots enough to see the promos for this show, or Ten has just given up on it.

Let me see, watched Rules of Engagement, Terra Nova, Supernatural, Smallville, Simpsons, NCIS, American Horror Story (BTW, may I say "Yipe!"). I think that's plenty of chances to see even one promo ad.

Thanks, Wendell. I should have had a look myself but I was too busy hating Nine. Still, I won't change my opinion of them in a hurry as I still have doubts they will put it back on at a decent time.

Besides any network that puts Warwick Cappa and Pauline Hanson on in the same show deserve my scorn. And then there's the return of Big Brother. Oh and the whole Baliboy thing. Need I say more?

And poor old Ten must be wondering what it's done wrong. Kiddie Chef was such a success last year but I think we're all Masterchefed out at the moment. Doubt we'll see a 3rd season.

I actually saw a promo for 'The X Factor' (the title of which, to be blunt, refers to that Indefinable Something), which featured Mel B saying something like: "Wall, oi sore that boy sengin', roight, end oi joost fort to meself, eee by goom, eee's got soomet thair, soomet oi carnt quoit poot me finger on, eh? Soomet yer joost carnt discribe, eh? Dunno whatcha moight carl it, but whatever 'tis, eee's got it..."

So, my answer would be, no. Yes, we have no brains. Or maybe it's just her. And all the others.

Caught half of "American Horror Story" last night. 'twas right up my alley, but was too exhausted to watch the whole thing. (Looking forward to Christmas holidays here...) Will have to source elsewhere to watch it fully and properly. Maybe I'll have some free time around Christmas...

Still reading this year's Miles Franklin Literary Award winner, "That Deadman Dance" by Kim Scott. Finding it a challenging read, but a rewarding one at the same time.

Ten alone hasn't killed off The Simpsons. It's writers have done a damn fine job of that for the past few seasons. Old Simpsons is clever, witty and funny. New Simpsons is plain awful.

Tuned in last night for a bit as it was the yearly Halloween episode. Well, I last for the first story which was just one long fart joke, then changed over to Glee and stayed there instead. Really, fart jokes are the best they can come up with? I won't watch any new eps ever again.

BTW Glee was pretty good and I had gone off it a bit last season. But seems to have changed this season and is actually good again. Then spent the rest of the night with ABC. Will be so sad to see the end of Spicks!

The worst thing 11 has done to the Simpsons is confuse viewers as to when they can expect to see a new episode. It's supposed to be Wednesdays, but then they screen a repeat. Then they try to promote repeat compilations as something new. Creates a bit of a ho-hum factor. Seems to be the same with Futurama, but seeing as I was never a huge fan of that show, I haven't given it the same attention. All of the "new" digital channels had betetr lift their game before the analogue channel switch off.
