1985 Bears, 18-1, Super Bowl 20 Champions
The 1985 Bears employed coordinator Buddy Ryan’s 46 defense to perfection, recording four shutouts (including two in the playoffs) and holding 14 of 19 opponents to 10 or fewer points. They reeled off 12 consecutive victories, by an average score of 30-11, before suffering their only loss of the season. The defense intercepted 34 passes and recovered 27 opponents’ fumbles, finishing with a league-leading plus-23 in turnover margin. Massive rookie defensive tackle William “The Refrigerator” Perry was used to steamroll (and humiliate) opponents as a blocking back or ballcarrier in short-yardage and goal-line situations. They dominated the Patriots in Super Bowl 20, allowing only 10 points and 123 total yards (including just seven rushing yards).
