UFC 139 results: Urijah Faber blasts, chokes out Brian Bowles to earn title shot

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Urijah Faber is one big step closer to reclaiming a big-show championship.

The bantamweight fighter blasted and then choked out fellow ex-WEC champion Brian Bowles and immediately called out the reigning titleholder.

The fight aired on UFC 139's pay-per-view main card from HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., following prelims on Facebook and Spike TV.

The fighters traded heavy blows through the first few minutes of the fight, but Faber scored a big takedown and landed a brief amount of ground and pound before the round ended.

But early in the second round, Faber stunned Bowles with a big right uppercut, followed him to the mat with punches, and then blasted him with violent elbow strikes as he tried to get back to his feet. Faber then slapped on a top-side guillotine choke to force a tap-out.

The end came at the 1:27 of the second round.

After the fight, Faber called out current bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz, against whom he's 1-1. The victory over Bowles earns him another shot at the champ's title.

"That's how you finish the fights," Faber said. "Dominick, you can run, but you can't hide, homeboy."

Faber (26-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) was fighting for the first time since his decision loss to Cruz back in July. Bowles (10-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC), meanwhile, suffers his first UFC loss.

Faber is Beast

SayNoToFitch on Nov 19, 2011 at 10:55 pm ET
+1. That was some ridiculous domination of a game Bowles.

Shotokan_BJJ on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:36 am ET
People were complaining of Faber's performances in the UFC, specially considering how much the UFC marketing machine was "selling" him, today he showed some vintage Urijah Faber and why he was the star in the WEC, setting up a rematch against that point fighter Cruz.

azsimp on Nov 19, 2011 at 10:51 pm ET
I am about rematched-out, but Faber vs Cruz makes sense in this division.

Yamakawa on Nov 19, 2011 at 10:55 pm ET
I don't really want to see Faber fight Cruz again... :0(

SayNoToFitch on Nov 19, 2011 at 10:58 pm ET
Yeah rematches are getting blah... but I think it makes for an exciting rubber match, and it's warranted. Faber deserves it. Not like he got dominated.

ActionMMA on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:37 am ET
I think Faber should have to fight mighty mouse or that kid that knocked out Soto

hello2010 on Nov 19, 2011 at 11:28 pm ET
Whats wrong with you guys no way!!! the next person to fight Cruz should be Renan Barao his dominated all his mma life and his only loss was his debut by split decision.

MMAjunkieX on Nov 19, 2011 at 11:45 pm ET
OMG LOL!!! Shogun sounds completely Irish in his post fight interview haha.

Faber fighting for the belt again? He cannot beat Cruz so what's the point? I didn't see anything in his game that would say otherwise. Also everyone thought that some magical Shogun would reappear, however he just got his ass kicked by Hendo for the first 3 rounds of his fight. Neither of them have anything for Bones....

mmaLAfan on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:05 am ET

he already beat Cruz once, moron.

punisher777 on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:14 am ET
Yeah that was a while ago jackass. Think before you call someone names troll

mmaLAfan on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:17 am ET

so what, Faber looked hungry and more motivated.  Cruz looked pretty weak in his last fight and just had surgery on his hand.  He may comeback weak while Faber wants the belt back bad, idiot.

punisher777 on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:18 am ET
Yeah keep hoping and dreaming. If Faber wasnt hungry for his title shot that was recent why would anything be different now? Get off the Bangwagon B itch.

mmaLAfan on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:23 am ET

lol god you're stupid.  I've always been a huge fan of Faber because he has great heart, I'm not a bandwagoner.  Like I just said you have no idea how Cruz will comeback from that hand injury and the rehab.  Faber looked motivated and improved tonight.  Activate your brain cells (if you have any) because Faber and Cruz are 1-1 and who knows what well happen in the 3rd meeting.

punisher777 on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:34 am ET
Blah Blah I don't hear anything your saying. Stop talking S hit, put your money where your big mouth is. I got Cruz you can have Faber lets make it interesting. I do activate my brain cells since I don't want to talk in circles with a dude online ( even though you might get off on it) time to put up or shut up or dont waste my time

mmaLAfan on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:43 am ET

Guaranteed your a 15 year old nerd.  I pointed out how dumb something you said was and you can't handle it lol

punisher777 on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:46 am ET
I can handle it, haha 15 nerd, never boy you wish. You cant handle the bet I laid out, stop wasting time and either accept or run away. Stop hiding behind childish insults. I am the 15 nred but you say idiot, and moron, hmmm ok hypocrite are you? hmmm I think yes

punisher777 on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:49 am ET
Faber will never hold that belt or any other belt. He will drop to 125, challenge for the belt and lose. Face it, Faber will always be a contender never a belt holder, so go cry to your Faber poster on your wall next to your Justin Beiber poster and come to terms with it. Punk..

mmaLAfan on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:51 am ET

How dumb are you?  Faber will always be a contender and never a belt holder?  Faber was the featherweight champion

punisher777 on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:54 am ET
GOD. I don't mean in the past I meant going forward he will never hold that belt. I know he was the wec 145 champ in a weak division. He could also be the champion of cookie cutting too but its just as dumb to mention. PAst doesnt mean jack ****., Liddell was the champion does that mean he can beat Jones? GTFO...

MMAFanNY on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:39 pm ET
Listen my LA counterpart don't argue with idiots they drag you down to their level where they are much better equipped and more experienced. Here are some facts that this clown either doesn't know or chooses to ignore. At 135 this is what Faber has done: Finished Mizugaki, longtime contender and former title challenger, defeated Wineland, former challenger, lost a Razor thin decision to Champ Cruz in a fight some had him actually winning and now demolished former champ Bowles, the man everyone was saying was the guy who can beat Cruz. Maybe he should've had one more fight but who else is there really at 135? After how good he looked against Cruz who did a whole lot less damage to him then he did to Cruz, and steamrolling through Bowles he has a damn good shot and dethroning the champ. Picking on Faber is the easy way out and makes people feel like a real fan but the truth is hes one of if not the best guy at 135 and he'll get his chance to show it when him and Cruz complete the trilogy.

thiagosilva74 on Nov 21, 2011 at 11:21 am ET
if faber doesnt win this time he's basically another kenny florian. multiple wight classes and title shots but no belt.

punisher777 on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:38 am ET
Now when the talking stops you disappear how typical. Stand by your word.Don't be scared homie.

mmaLAfan on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:41 am ET

We are typing not talking idiot

punisher777 on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:43 am ET
The way you are typing its like your talking dumbass, stop changing the subject b itch. Lets put a bet on the table. You scared?

mmaLAfan on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:47 am ET

What do you bet?

punisher777 on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:50 am ET
We could do money, sig, or comments, I'm game. Faber will lose anyways so I'm safe.

mmaLAfan on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:54 am ET

Put your wager down.

punisher777 on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:56 am ET
I asked you money, sig, comments. I am game what are the terms. How about if Faber wins I will give you $100 and comment for a month on how I love Faber, and your the best poster on junkie and he is the P4P king. If you lose same terms accept it's Cruz and cvicious85 thats the man. You accept?

mmaLAfan on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:58 am ET

Sure thing

punisher777 on Nov 20, 2011 at 1:00 am ET
Ok it's official. Now when is that fight set? Is faber the definite next contender?

punisher777 on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:57 am ET
mmaLAfan I give you credit this back and forth is actually fun. lol

mmaLAfan on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:59 am ET

Hell yeah, haha

punisher777 on Nov 20, 2011 at 1:02 am ET
People are saying Renao might get the next shot. So hope Faber can fight Cruz now. Haha yep pretty funny stuff brother...

mmaLAfan on Nov 20, 2011 at 1:34 am ET

Yeah, in all good fun lol, after the performance Faber just put on I bet he'll get it.  There's too much money in that fight imo

punisher777 on Nov 20, 2011 at 1:52 am ET
Yep and Dana confirmed Faber vs Cruz 3, so we will definitely see, anything can happen. That is a key fight for the lower weight class since many fans are still unaware these weight classes exist. So it could put those classes on the map with that fight. Trilogies make money, ala Edgar vs Maynard 3. Randy vs Chuck 3, Randy vs Rampage, and so on...

footballkickjuiwes on Nov 19, 2011 at 11:59 pm ET
I liked Wiedman's choke better than Faber's.

paddiosf on Nov 19, 2011 at 11:59 pm ET
ZZZ another title shot, UFC wants so badly to give Faber his belt

leej0hn on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:54 am ET
Im actually looking forward to faber-cruz 3. Recently Faber has looked to be improving after every fight, with the exception of the last fight with cruz. I think this will be the best we have ever seen Faber. But if Cruz wins, then Faber will need to beat damn near everyone in the division to get another shot

north808boyz on Nov 20, 2011 at 12:55 am ET
i know dam ufc needs more 135ers so they don't half to keep giving butt chin faber title shots after just 1-2 wins

Yamakawa on Nov 20, 2011 at 1:50 am ET
I really don't understand why he gets another title shot so soon. Why not have him fight Scott Jorgenson, or Miguel Torres, or Renan Baraos for that matter? Baraos is on a great run and beat Brad Pickett in England, he deserves another big name opponent like Faber. I would have liked to see them shelf Cruz for a couple of more months and get another #1 contender fight in. 135 is a bit of a mess right now, with lots of great fighters who are relatively evenly matched.

jobe on Nov 21, 2011 at 12:24 pm ET

Who really wants to see ANOTHER Cruiz / Fabor fight?

God, Fabor is an arrogant prick.
