- The show was originally called "The Amazing Hannigans," then it was changed to "The Amazing O'Malleys," then it was changed to "Wizards of Waverly Place," then to "Disney's Wizards," and finally back to "Wizards of Waverly Place."
- Selena Gomez's character was originally named Brooke O'Malley.
- Some of the spells are created by using the names of the producers. (E.g. Murrieta Animata is Peter Murrieta, Executive Producer.)
- The hardware store is called Greenwald's Hardware, which is a reference to creator Todd J. Greenwald.
- Despite the Russo family mixed ethnicities of Mexican and Italian, Selena Gomez (Alex) in real life is the only actor to have both ethnicities whereas Jake T. Austin (Max) is Puerto Rican, Polish and Argentine, David Henrie (Justin) and David DeLuise (Jerry) are Italian while Maria Canals-Barrera (Theresa) is Cuban.
- Several characters are named for characters from series in the 1960s. Mr. Laritate is named for the character played by David White in Bewitched; Ms. Majorhealey for a character played by Bill Daily in I Dream of Jeannie.

Non-continuity happens as this seems to be the first time they meet, but during the series after this show they were friends as kids.
- This marks the introduction of the school principal Mr. Laritate, whose name is a reference to the character Larry Tate from Bewitched.

- There are several references to Harry Potter. The Headmaster resembles Dumbledore, Justin is a Natural at 12 ball (Harry was a natural at Quidditch), the uniform is a robe and black framed glassed and Wiz-tech resembles Hogwarts.

- This episode kind of connects to the universe that the 1978 television series Taxi takes place in. Alex Russo was born the Sunshine Cab Company's cab #804. Not only is that the same company that the series Taxi revolves around, but that exact cab was part of a season 1 two-part episode entitled "Memories of Cab 804" in which the cabbies recollect all of the memorable events that took place while they drove that cab. In Part 2, Alex Reiger (played by Judd Hirsch) recalls the time a woman gave birth in the back of the cab. If only this Taxi episode had originally aired 15 years later and Maria Canals played that woman, Alex Russo could have conceivably been born on another series!
- A blur was placed over Theresa's cleavage in two shots when she's stopping the old lady from flirting with Jerry.
