ROVERS SIGN PARKES ON LOAN

Posted on: Thu 09 Feb 2012

Rovers have signed defender Tom Parkes on a month's loan.

The 20 year-old is a product of Leicester's youth academy, and has had loan spells at Burton Albion and Yeovil Town.

Manager Mark McGhee said: "The injury to Aaron Downes left us with only two experienced centre halves so we wanted to bring someone in to strengthen that position.

"We were aware of Tom Parkes, and having spoken to Leicester, we wall believe that he is a great option for us.

"He already knows Cian Bolger as the two have them have developed together at Leicester and get on well, so they will be able to get off to a flying start.

"He is a left sided player, and different from Cian, so that should give us a bit of balance at the back.

"Leicester have said that they see these two as a potential partnership for the future.

"Three of the four defenders who started my first game in charge have picked up injuries, but now we can go into the Morecambe game with a back four and cover we can feel happy with."

Parkes, who is 6 ft 2ins, joined Burton Albion on a one month loan in January 2010 to help ease their injury crisis. On 30 January Parkes agreed to extend his loan at Burton until the end of the 2009/10 season.

In December 2010 he went out on loan to League One side Yeovil Town and made two appearances for them in his month at Huish Park.

In March 2011, Parkes joined Burton Albion for a second loan spell until the end of the 2010/11 season.

He then joined Burton Albion again on a sixth month loan deal at the start of the 2011-12 season.

Unfortunately this came to a premature end after only three league games after Parkes suffered a broken ankle. He made his return in January as a substitute in a match against Plymouth Argyle.

Chairman Nick Higgs said: "We would like to welcome Tom to the club and thank Leicester for helping us out once again.

"Having him at the club gives us some options as we have had a spate of injuries at centre half.

"Tom is an exciting prospect for the future and we hope that everyone can benefit from his spell with us."

Parkes has represented England at under-17 level 18 times, scoring 1 goal. Parkes was a member of the England Under-17 squad for the 2009 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship.
