Leafs draft Nazem Kadri
After failing to trade up, Brian Burke and the Leafs have selected Nazem Kadri with the #7 overall pick.
He was only ranked 15 in NA by Central Scouting, but most other lists had him in the top ten. The Hockey News and Bob McKenzie both had him ranked #8.
His Hockey Future page is here.
What do you think? Good pick? Bad pick? And how do you feel about the failure to move up?

trading would have cost us too much...so im okay with the pick...would have loved to have Cowen though

Probably not, since Murray said that’s who the Sens wanted at #9.

Today is the trade deadline all over again.
Lots of talk, not much action. Not necessarily a bad thing — sometimes the best move is the one you don’t make — but at what point does Burke need to start actually doing something?

you’re right, Burke’s moves, while not necessarily bad, could’ve been made by any GM. I am not yet impressed.

Burke told duthie that he could have moved into the top 3 but refused to part with Schenn….JFJ would have done it.

JFJ would have traded Schenn to get into the top 3 and then selected Kadri

I'm thinking the same thing.
And I don’t like it. This was supposed to be Burke’s time to shine. So far, I’m rather disappointed.
Burke is a scrappy Irishman…he was not about to be pushed around or swindled. That being said..I will wait for B Schenn to be RFA in 3 years,or 4.Then he can come to Toronto.

I'll have to say. . .
People are having far too high expectations for Burke. Doesn’t really surprise me though, it’s been pretty much the curse on every person involved with the Maple Leafs since, well, forever to have high expectations placed on them by Leaf fans.
That being said, I still am pretty torn up about Schenn the younger going to LA.

Agree wholeheartedly on this post. A lot of people thought Burke was going to completely change this team overnight and that’s just not realistic right now.

Love it.
Did anybody else see the reaction Ottawa had when BB picked him?
Priceless.
I think this is a good pick.
I would imagine that Burke’s wheeling and dealing will have to wait until Jay Bo goes, then we’ll probably see the actual value of Kaberle. Considering that Boston thought they would be taking Kaberle and the 7th rounder for Kessel is a joke. Looks to me like people are trying to play Burke, and he’s not having any of it.
Still can’t wait to hear the news on the “Monster”

So the best GM in the league (just ask him!) is now deferring to the Panthers?

Jay Bo, I’d guess, will set the market value for this “session” for a top-flight D-man, which will let everyone have a better idea of the price of a Kaberle.

Well, I don't see it as deferring to the Panthers. . .
I see more of it as Jay Bouwmeester being the “hot” commodity this offseason. As far as puck moving defenseman go(at least those that are on the trading block or FA) it was my perception that the big names(or the hot names at least) have been Jay Bo, Pronger and Kaberle. We already saw what the “Man of Many Elbows” has gone for today with the trade to Philly, and when Jay Bo goes to whatever team he goes to, he’ll be establishing a ceiling price that people are willing to pay. That’s not exactly earth shattering news, or anything that I think you don’t already know(not trying to step on anyone’s toes here).
If I’m BB, I say to myself: “Self, we have a solid, puck moving defenseman that teams to tend to salivate over. On draft day people tried to nickel and dime us to death, and gave us nothing for it. Now we have one big name gone from the list of available and pretty good defensemen, now we just wait until someone picks up Jay Bo and then we can get everyone else to compete(in theory) to raise the price of Kabby.” Then, and only then would I make a trade.
What’s the worst thing that can happen? We have Kaberle for another season? Despite the hate that he gets, he’s more than all right in my book.

Ugh
I’m still clinging to the hope that it only sounded like he said “Nazem Kadri” because he was mangling the pronunciation for CTRL-V.
And now Cowen’s a Sen. This is worse than reading a Damien Cox column.
Okay, so far, this is fucking shit, but if Burke somehow manages to get Kassian, I might be willing to forgive…
Agreed.

I am so glad Burke didnt pressure the Avs
I would’ve driven to Montreal and slapped the new Avs staff if they tradedd the 3rd pick away.
But about Kadri, I’d say it’s a good pick.
2008-2009 Avalanche: It's like watching a car crash.
I think Kadri could be a great player. He had a hell of a year in London, and has some serious skills. It’s not who I thought the Leafs would pick, but I’m not going to slam Burke for staying at 7. I would have liked to see it, but he said he would have had to include Schenn to do it, so the price was too much. I’m comfortable with that.
Being a Leaf fan here requires one to be sufficiently lubricated!
Kadri playing for the Leafs right now with Burke and co. on hand will really help him. They’re going to tell him what he needs to improve and will always have his back. I think that’s really important to a prospect.

I know
nothing about this kid
also, am not remotely surprised that there was no pick movement for the Leafs, I TOLD you all this was going to happen 3 months ago during the trade deadline… that there’s no way anyone is going to be able to move up within the top 10 without overpaying

i have no idea what to make of this pick. he wasn’t linked to the leafs pre-draft so this took me by surprise – i know nothing about this kid. it sounds like he has lots of offensive skills, but not sure his size and style of play are going to make the leafs ‘tougher’, as burke has been promising recently. so no judgement for now, we’ll have to see how he pans out. fingers crossed.
the burn on bryan murray / ottawa was a nice touch at least.
Well
The swirling cesspit of stupid that is hfboards.com hates this pick, so it’s probably a pretty good one.

They just hate the fact that we may get good. They like low picks and trading somebody anytime they get good for more picks.
Exactly. To them a pick is more valueable than the player taken with the pick. It’s like that episode of Family Guy where Peter has to decide between a boat and a mystery prize. “A boat is a boat, but a mystery prize could be anything. Even a boat!”

Fuck’s sake.
All I can imagine is that they’ve grown bored of a constant diet of pizza and internet porn and have decided to move onto a pastime even less worthwhile than masturbating fifteen times a day. Making unfounded predictions about how this kid’s career path is going to pan out before we’ve even seen him play is less than intelligent.

Offensively gifted and showing a greater appreciation for the defensive side of his game, Kadri could be a wild card in this draft.
Hockey’s Future
Centring the second line with the Memorial Cup finalist Kitchener Rangers last season, Kadri showed some highlight reel moves and has great stick skills and dekeing ability with the puck. Has great speed, which he uses quite effectively to get to an open spot.

honestly, its not like Burke went way off board and pick some dood no one heard about. The kid was a top ten on most people’s lists and dang, he was also on Burke’s list. I think once the pain and anguish of not having went a lot of us wanted (Schenn 2.0 and Cowen and even Tavares), I think we’ll see Kadri as a very solid choice under the circumstances

A loss in the final game of the season = Schenn
How can an organization with as much money and manpower at their disposal not be aware that it the Leafs had lost their last game to Ottawa, the Leafs would have had the 5th overall pick (at least heading into the Lottery which changed nothing).
