Devizes Heritage - aims and contact details

 

Devizes Heritage is a non-profit organisation founded in 2009. It aims to research, interpret and provide educational programmes and resources about the historic and natural heritage of Devizes and its villages. 

 

There are two major projects at present. Historical research and development of the website and research and a planned archaeological survey of the battle of Roundway Down 1643 battlefiled site. Sam Wilson is our field archaeologist and he is in the final stages of completing the Project Design. This will be submitted to the Wiltshire Archaeological Service during April 2012. We are working with a team of volunteer metal detectors led by Roger Vanstone. We hope to start the survey in September 2012re are two major projects one the development of the website and historic

 

The Chairman and webmaster is Alan Carter .We provide a free website that has resulted from the efforts of local history groups and individual research utilizing the web and the excellent libraries and archives at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre in Chippenham  and the Wiltshire Heritage Museum in Devizes. In the digital age of the 21st Century this website is dedicated to making natural and historical information available on-line for the  public. The web site is non- profit and advertising is not allowed.The material on this website, including its photographs may be used for any non-profit or educational use. An acknowledgement of the use of this material would be appreciated. 

 

  

 

 

The website provides detailed information and photo-galleries about ;

  1. Historic houses, the Castle, churches, the civil war in and around Devizes, historic inns, schools, industries, prisons and the development of Devizes through time,
  2. The history and archaeology of Devizes from the Neolithic, through Roman, Medieval, Civil War and modern times,
  3. The lives of historically significant people, the memories and oral histories of local men and women in the 20th century and their roles in the Second World War,
  4. Current cultural activities within the area,
  5. Our beautiful natural areas, parks, footpaths and downs including access maps.

Ongoing research is underway about ;

  1. Significant individual lives,important houses and listed buildings.
  2. Documenting old photos and artwork, and the economic history of Devizes,
  3. Documenting primary historical sources on the Battle fo Roundway Down in 1643. Planning for archaeological research and fieldwork to  locate the precise location of various phases in the Battle of Roundway Down. 
  4. Bromham Hall, we aim to locate and survey the significant medieval mansion in Bromham.

A successful programme of educational talks to local groups and schools is underway.

The Chairman  is Alan Carter. He is  a retired research scientist and teacher. For 25 years he was at Wellington College in Berkshire as Head of Chemistry and a Housemaster. He was an enthusiastic mountaineer and lived in Canada for 11 years. He is now a walker, canoeist and photographer. Alan lives in Devizes with his wife Susan. His son Stephen is an ICT teacher and historian who has provided much needed technical help and support with producing the web site.

 

Alan works with colleagues in the Wiltshire History Centre, the U3a Local History group, and the Wiltshire Buildings Records Office. He is a member of the Trust for Devizes and the Wiltshire Heritage Museum.
