Cookstown pair hand Ireland German win

Senior Men’s International: Germany 1 (M Witthaus) Ireland 2 (I Sloan, D Ames)
Cookstown natives Ian Sloan and David Ames handed Ireland just their second ever victory over Germany – the current world number two side – in their challenge match in Mannheim.

It adds another notable scalp to their growing collection, becoming the fifth side in the world’s top 11 – all of whom are bound for the Olympics – Paul Revington’s side have beaten in the past year.

Teenager Sloan broke the deadlock in the sixth minute of a high tempo game as he converted a drag flick. The Irish held that lead until the 55th minute before the vastly experienced Matthias Witthaus scored his second of the week with a deflected effort.

But Ames – added to the panel after representing club side Beeston last weekend in the EuroHockey League – and Sloan exchanged passes with the former finishing off the move with ten minutes to go for a 2-1 win.

Ireland had lost the first match-up of the week but bounced back with a 2-1 win over the German U-21s on Tuesday afternoon before finishing the three-game series with this notable success.

Ireland: D Fitzgerald, K Carroll, J Jackson, R Gormley, P Caruth, I Sloan, J Bell, B McCandless, P Maguire, D Ames, S O’Donoghue
Subs: I Hughes, D Cole, C Cargo, J Bruton, J Lynch

Success is never tedious and neither is losing or praising in the right spirit.
Why should Monkstown not celebrate success every club should do it .It takes a lot of time and effort to run and coach a club.Obviously hockey addict comes from a club that does not promote these ideals.

What’s getting tedious on this site is reading about people’s achievements and people coming out hiding behind an alias and slating people/clubs or making childish comments. Get over yourselves.

It doesn’t look like anybody is slating people or clubs(not certain where the childish comment comes in) just recognising good news ,hockey has often beeen criticised for not celebrating success.Hopefully there will be lots more of it in the future to shout about.
