Poor first half costs NYC Cowboys
Sat March 12, 2011
Source: www.cowboys.com.au

A poor first half ended up costing the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys NYC team who lost 46-24 to the Brisbane Broncos in last night's season opener at Suncorp Stadium.

A hat-trick of tries to centre Moses Pangai was a clear highlight for the beaten Cowboys, who committed too many errors in possession to threaten a talented young Broncos line-up.

The Cowboys' deficit blew out to 26 points at one stage of the first half as Brisbane roared along at almost a point a minute.

The Broncos started their first-half scoring blitz in the sixth minute when a pass from centre Jordan Kahu allowed winger Chris Kuridrani a clear path to the tryline.

Second-rower Mitchell Frei, the son of former Queensland Bulls medium-pacer Harry Frei, added the first of five straight conversions he kicked in the first 40 minutes.

Broncos halfback Louis Frisby crossed for a double in a four-minute period to build the lead to 18-0 before the Cowboys conceded a soft try when hooker Kurt Baptiste plunged over from close to the line.

The damage could have been worse for North Queensland had fullback Wayne Ulugia not pulled off a great covering tackle on Kahu when the fleet-footed Bronco centre looked to be headed for his side's fifth try.

The match finally turned the Cowboys way when Pangai's first four-pointer came with 15 minutes left in the first half.

Hooker John Lobwein took off out of dummy-half and found the 20-year-old who managed to get the ball down despite the efforts of three defenders.

The Broncos went 30-4 up after an Aaron Whitchurch try, but Pangai responded by finishing off a set play to the left for his second, and then pulling off a huge hit to stop Whitchurch who was looking for a double, to leave the Cowboys 22 points down at the break.

The second half started well for North Queensland who bagged the first try as Nathan Norford took in a neat short ball from halfback Michael Morgan to reduce the deficit, with Kyle Feldt's conversion, to 30-14 in the 42nd minute.

Interchange forward Chris Grevsmuhl gave his side even more hope when he crossed for the Cowboys' fourth try only to have their comeback thwarted when fullback Lachlan Maranta found a path through the middle of the NQ defence to score under the posts.

Even Pangai's third try, a runaway effort where he managed to fend off Maranta for the final 10 metres of his journey, couldn't get the Cowboys back in the game.

The Broncos completed an impressive performance when fullback Corey Norman, who made his NRL debut in round one last year, snared the home side's seventh try of the night and then threw the final pass for replacement Dan Wallace's try in the final two minutes.

Frei's missed conversion was his only one for the night as the Broncos ended up as eight tries to five winners.

Prop Sam Hoare and second-rower Chris McLean led the Cowboys' tackle count with 20 each.

Second-rower Jason Taumalolo was the top gainer in attack, picking up 158 metres in 16 hit-ups.

BRISBANE BRONCOS 46 (L Frisby 2, C Kuridrani, K Baptiste, A Whitchurch, L Maranta, C Norman, D Wallace tries; M Frei 7 goals) d NORTH QUEENSLAND TOYOTA COWBOYS 24 (M Pangai 3, N Norford, C Grevsmuhl tries; K Feldt 3 goals).
