Carolina Panthers to play first game away because of DNC

By April Bethea

The Carolina Panthers will play their first regular season game away as Bank of America stadium will be used during the Democratic National Convention, team owner Jerry Richardson said today.

Of the move, Richardson said, "in this case we were willing to do it."

Democratic party officials confirmed today that President Barack Obama will accept the party's nomination during a speech at the 74,000-seat football stadium on Sept. 6.

DNC officials said using the stadium will give more people a chance to be part of the convention festivities. The decision to use the stadium was made in late 2011, officials said at a morning event.

Staff writer Jim Morrill contributed.
