9th Grade High Rocks Trip

We have planned an exciting trip for the freshman class!  They are going on a four-day trip to Camp High Rocks (http://www.camphighrocks.com/) in Cedar Mountain, near Brevard, NC.  Departure is at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14.  We will return to Trinity at approximately 11: p.m. on Friday, August 17.  Transportation will be provided by Mears Transportation.

While at camp, students participate in rock climbing, high and low ropes courses, cooperation courses, nature hikes, swimming, canoeing, raft building, and low impact camping.  An optional two-night hike is also available for a limited number of students on a first come, first served basis. Program activities are directed by High Rocks staff, with Trinity Prep teachers in attendance to help and chaperone.

For more information, you can go to http://leap.highrocks.com/parents/index.htm .  The user name is "parent" and the password is "leap."

A mandatory orientation meeting for parents and students will be held in the Education Center Auditorium on Saturday, August 13, from 3:00-4:00 p.m.

This trip is an integral part of the freshman experience at Trinity Prep. Bonding as a class is very important as the students embark on their high school experience.  Many new friendships are forged during this trip as well as some old one renewed.

It is important that students get all forms necessary for the trip in to the school by May 25, 2012.  These forms are (links provided below) are included in the annual information and forms update.

TPS Parent Authorization

High Rocks Agreement to Participate

High Rocks Medical Form

TPS Overnight Hike (optional activity)

Camp High Rocks Equipment List

All students should plan to bring the following items, along with clothes for three days.  Weather can vary drastically, so please be prepared.  Synthetics work best, especially if they get wet from rain or perspiration. Please do not send new clothes as students often get dirty participating in the activities, and clothes may get stained.

Essentials:

  • Sleeping bag or sheet set; all cabins have twin beds and mattresses
  • Pillow
  • One sweat shirt or jacket
  • Rain poncho or rain jacket

  • Bathing suit
  • 2 towels--one for showering and one for swimming
  • Water shoes or old tennis shoes that can get wet and muddy (old sneakers can be thrown away before returning home)
  • Hiking boots or sturdy tennis shoes
  • Toiletries
  • Water bottle
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Bug repellent (non-aerosol)

Backpacking Equipment List

This list is for the students who sign up for the optional overnight backpacking experience.

  • Sleeping bag (not cotton)
  • Rain gear (poncho or rain suit)
  • Nylon shorts and pants that can be layered

  • Towel
  • Toiletries

High Rocks will provide the backpacks, ground pads, and all camping equipment such as tents, cooking gear, and eating utensils.

No candy, gum, or food of any kind is permitted in the cabins. These items are allowed on the buses, but will be collected upon arrival at camp.  Electronic equipment like CD/DVD players and video games are permitted.  They must be labeled as they will be collected upon arrival at the camp as well.

OVERNIGHT CHALLENGE HIKE

This is a two-night hiking and camping experience limited to 50 students.

Students participating in this experience will enjoy initiatives, nature observation, minimum impact camping, hiking, cooking, rock climbing, swimming, and mountain ecology.  The students will be divided into five groups.  They will depart from the camp on Wednesday after lunch and return to camp on Friday after lunch. There will be two High Rocks staff members, who are CPR and Wilderness First Response certified, with each group.  One Trinity teacher may also go with each group.

All students are expected to attend.  Please call Christine Hempsted at 321.282.2541 if you need to discuss these plans for your child.
