Sunnymead Conservation Area

The Crawley Development Corporation designed Sunnymead Flats in the 1950s. They were originally built for the workers involved in the construction of the New Town. Sunnymead Flats represent an example of early New Town housing and are considered to be of architectural significance. They were designated as a Conservation Area in 1997.

Guidance for Residents

It is important that minor changes are carried out in the same style as the original flats, respecting the original design principles and using similar materials.

There are distinctive characteristics that need to be preserved. These include the architectural style, materials, layout and landscaping and the relationship with surrounding housing areas.

Windows

Replacement windows should be of the same size and arrangement as existing. Clear glass should be used and effects such as leading should be avoided. Window frames should be recessed to maintain the window sill. White UPVC is an acceptable modern alternative.

Doors

Door furniture should not be over elaborate. Colour schemes should match the existing. Vertical wooden panelled doors are acceptable for the outbuildings.

Roofs

Dark grey pantiles should be used to match the existing roofs of the flats.

Satellite dishes

Satellite dishes will normally require planning permission. Sharing is encouraged to prevent a proliferation of dishes having a detrimental visual impact. Residents should use the supplied ducting and avoid running cables on the outside of the flats.

Balconies

Railings should be painted to match the existing colour scheme. If a balcony is replaced they should match the existing in terms of style and colour.

Bin stores

Bin stores should be painted to match the flats to which they are adjacent. Vertical wooden panelled doors are acceptable for outbuildings. Dark felt should be used to match the existing outbuildings roofs.

Communal open space

The area around the flats should be kept open and should remain predominantly grass.
