Obama's still up in Virginia, but Romney's closing gap

Posted to: Elections Federal Government News Politics Presidential Election

President Barack Obama leads Republican Mitt Romney among likely Virginia voters, according to a new Old Dominion University poll, but the survey – taken in the weeks before and after their first debate – indicates Romney is closing the gap.

The landline and cellphone survey, conducted between Sept. 19 and Oct. 17 by ODU's Social Science Research Center, found that Obama was favored by 50 percent, Romney by 43 percent and three other presidential candidates by a combined 3 percent.

Just over 3 percent of those polled said they were undecided or didn't know. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.

Poll takers began to see a marked shift toward Romney after the Oct. 3 televised debate in Denver, said Jesse Richman, an assistant professor of political science at ODU who analyzed the poll results.

Of the 465 voters surveyed, about two-thirds were contacted before the debate and supported Obama by a wide margin. But most of the other one-third polled after Oct. 3 favored Romney. The margin of error is larger when splitting apart the poll group, Richman said, but the shift is significant.

"That tells you that the debates matter for people's attitudes," he said Tuesday. "The level of support that Obama had in September began to evaporate as we moved into October."

ODU also found that voters who said their households include active duty or military veterans tended to support Romney in greater numbers than they did Obama.

In the U.S. Senate race, Democrat Tim Kaine held a strong lead over Republican George Allen. Kaine, a former governor, was supported by 50 percent of those polled and Allen, a former governor and senator, by 43 percent, with 6 percent undecided.

Regardless of their views on the candidates, the heavy barrage of political advertising by the national campaigns and their supporters is getting mixed reactions from Virginians. Most said they find the ads by both candidates and their supporters to be honest, but one in four said ads were either "not very honest" or "not at all honest."

Richman said the high level of disgust with the ads hurts voting.

"One of the characteristics of this election cycle is an extraordinary degree of public disenchantment with the political parties and the process," he said. "Some people are getting pretty turned off by the whole thing. If you think both candidates are lying to you, how motivated are you to participate?"

While the third-party candidates are clearly not in a position to win the election, the poll shows that their support could influence the outcome in a tight race, Richman said. The other names on the Virginia presidential ballot are Virgil Goode for the Constitution Party, Gary Johnson for the Libertarian Party and Jill Stein for the Green Party.

If the presidential race is close, Richman said, Goode, a former GOP congressman in Virginia, and Johnson, a fiscal conservative, could draw votes away from Romney.

Pollsters

you mean the ones I keep hanging up on?

More debt faster than anyone in the history of the planet. Each family now owes 48,000 per person.

Every dime of the top 1% won't fix it. Let's stop fighting and get to work.

Republicans created the debt

Reagan and the two Bushes created most of the National Debt.

I've corrected you (meaning the author Bartel) multiple times before, and used reputable sources like Rasmussen and Gallup to refute your contentions. Important to ask the right questions: polling conducted in Portsmouth? Norfolk? Va Bch or Chesapeake? What is the breakdown of those polled by party affiliation just like professional pollsters do in every event. It does matter if the delta between Republicans and Libs is a minus 20 for Republicans; skewed data, and we'll not know form the ODU poll.
Fact: Rasmussen today, and prior to third debate - Team Romney/Ryan: 50; Losing incumbent: 47. National polls show Team R/R extending a strong lead, 51/46, 51/46, respectively. Benghazi-gate info that is damning is now surfacing. Team Romney/Ryan landslid

Even cherry-picking by using

Even cherry-picking by using only the the right-leaning Rasmussen poll, Obama is currently leading 237-235 (with 66 "toss-ups") in the electoral college vote. With no "toss-ups," Rasmussen has Obama winning 275-263.

That's just about the same as the more balanced poll averages by Real Clear Politics, with Obama winning 277-261.

The more sophisticated analysis by Nate Silver currently predicts an Obama win 288-250.

Obama Facts ( click link below for proof )

Obama invests 90 Billion into green energy jobs and half of the companies he picked have gone BANKRUPT. The latest Obama company to go Bankrupt is A123 a battery company not to mention Solyndra and N01, Inc and many others.

Many of these companies were owned by Obama contributors, so basically Obama gave these companies each as much as 500 million dollars in grants ( not loans ) in return for donations to his campaign. These companies in turn filed bankruptcy and walk away with billions of our tax dollars.

Obama has proven to us that he does not know how to invest in America or create jobs and his now 4 year horrible record proves he knows how to literally throw away our tax dollars. Obama promise

"........but the survey – taken in the weeks before and after their first debate – indicates Romney is closing the gap."

Sometimes the Pilot is good for a chuckle

"Of the 465 voters surveyed..."

Of course we could also go by a National Poll which has Romney up 50%-47%. No wait I know, I should be discouraged by the numbers and just not even bother to vote since Obama is a shoe in. Fat chance... I will be voting and these political stunts are hardly a deterrent.

national polls

national polls are irrelevant - what matters is state-by-state polls to determine the outcome in the electoral college, where Obama is still in the lead.

Bloomberg: Stocks do 9 times better with a Democratic president

Stocks do 9 times better with a Democrat in the White House....

While Republicans promote themselves as the friendliest party for Wall Street, stock investors do better when Democrats occupy the White House. From a dollars- and-cents standpoint, it’s not even close.

The BGOV Barometer shows that, over the five decades since John F. Kennedy was inaugurated, $1,000 invested in a hypothetical fund that tracks the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (SPX) only when Democrats are in the White House would have been worth $10,920 at the close of trading yesterday.

That’s more than nine times the dollar return an investor would have realized from following a similar strategy during Republican administrations.

Violins play 9 times better with a Democratic president...

Thus, 1%ers control 38% of the US’ wealth,
You’re rendered blind by crony dem stealth.
They told you to hate and occupy Wall St.
Now they tell you to champion the elite.

You have traversed naive—into the supernatural;
Do you feel eroticism—when played by rascals?
You are their puppet—manipulated to repeat,
Words from crony’s intransigent policy sheet.

And those words are being rewritten,
At a table where your masters are sittin’;
Strategizing with Crony's K-Street-dead-beats,
How to perpetuate the unseeing of Blind Sheep!

No change

The facts (unlike Romney's positions) don't change.

This is a joke, right?

I've corrected you multiple times before, and used reputable sources like Rasmussen and Gallup to refute your contentions. Important to ask the right questions: was polling conducted equally, or weighted in one zip code? Primarily in Portsmouth? Norfolk? Va Bch or Chesapeake? What is the breakdown of those polled by party affiliation just like professional pollsters do in every event? Are these likely or registered voters? It does matter if the delta between Republicans and Libs is a plus 20 Dem/minus 20 for Republicans; skewed data is jut that, and we'll not know from the ODU poll as you've written the piece.
