Nokia 3220 with NFC Shell

Nokia’s first NFC enabled mobile phone was the Nokia 3220. In this case, the phones itself did not contain NFC hardware, but there was an add-on shell (white/blue one) available, containing the hardware for NFC functionality. The shell contained a PCD with a PN512, a secure smart card chip (SmartMX) as well as Atmel micro-processor for the business logic. Thru a proprietary 5-pin connector the shell was able to communicate with the phone. The phone was a J2ME based S40 feature phone that already supported JSR257 for reading/writing tags as well as an extended API set for accessing the secure element of the phone. The device started shipping in summer 2005, but is no longer available.
