David O Russell To Direct Movie Version Of Vidgame ‘Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune’
David O Russell has signed on with Sony Pictures Entertainment to rewrite and direct a movie based on the PlayStation 3 game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Russell, who last directed Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale in The Fighter, takes on a vidgame that follows treasure hunter Nathan Drake. Tom Donnelly and Josh Oppenheimer wrote the first draft. The original game sold 1 million copies within 10 weeks of its release and spawned a sequel that sold 3.8 million units worldwide. Russell reportedly just fell out of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
If you’re unfamiliar with Uncharted, this is basically Tomb Raider for the current generation of video games and one of the A titles for the PS3 system. The main character, Nathan Drake, is basically a modern and cynical Indiana Jones. Part of the appeal for the games comes from great characterizations by the voice actors who also do motion capture for the cut scenes and add ad-libs, especially Nolan North as the lead. Wasn’t worse than Crystal Skulls but what isn’t?
Between Aronofsky being on the short list for the adaptation of a comic and this, it seems that the fashion for eccentric directors is to shoot pulp material. What is Paul Thomas Anderson doing these days?
Nathan Fillion for Nathan Drake! Nathan Fillion for Nathan Drake! Nathan Fillion for Nathan Drake! Nathan Fillion for Nathan Drake! Nathan Fillion for Nathan Drake! Nathan Fillion for Nathan Drake! Nathan Fillion for Nathan Drake! Nathan Fillion for Nathan Drake! Nathan Fillion for Nathan Drake! Nathan Fillion for Nathan Drake! Nathan Fillion for Nathan Drake!
What david said,only to infinity.
Script is shite. Written by hack-o-ramas Donnelly and Oppenheimer. Why would he do this after the Fighter which I hear is awesome?!?
When are people going to learn that movies based on videogames are awful? Like really, it takes the entire reputation of a great game and wrecks it.
I don’t know why they need to make an Uncharted movie. The production quality of the games themselves already rivaled those of a lot of what Hollywood is putting out now anyway. Just play the games again and beg and plead for Uncharted 3!
Two words: NATHAN FILLION
Yet another video game film? So what’s up for future films, well there is Cowboys and Aliens, another POTC, another Spider-Man, the Lone Ranger, another Batman,Bugs Bunny Meets Frankenstein, the Wolfman and Dracula with the entire cast of Twilight and Tom Joad Meets the Zombies. Yep should be mighty stimulating.
it’s sad to watch a genius fall in love with money
Well, as far as I know, Three Kings was a studio-owned script that he completely rewrote, saving only the general concept. Perhaps he’ll do the same with this (according to you) crap script.
yeah, I agree with anon, the script is really bad. No real stakes and while at times it reads poppy and fun as a whole it just doesn’t work, in a really big way. I couldn’t get through it. Had to stop on page 60. Plus the female reporter bit and the bad guys wanting to find this “treasure” to use it as a WMD was just idiotic. Hopefully DOR is getting a big holding fee out of this.
