The Hebridean island of Iona has a significant history and a special, spiritual atmosphere that continues to attract and inspire thousands of visitors each year.
The island is known internationally as the cradle of Scottish Christianity, thanks to the arrival in AD563 of St Columba and his followers. They went on to help spread the religion throughout much of Scotland.
Despite stretching only 3 miles from north to south and 1½ miles from east to west, Iona offers much to enjoy, including white sandy beaches, interesting walks and rare wildlife. Many have remarked on its exceptional quality of light and clarity of air.
