Wind Energy from High Altitudes

Since 2007 at Tampere University of Technology there has been research to develop new wind energy technologies that can utilize the whole troposphere. The contemporary wind turbine technology can only extract energy from winds close to the earth.

Unlimited Source of Energy

As an energy source the lowest part of the atmosphere, the troposphere, is both unlimited and stable. This is due to the almost constant winds in the higher parts (300 m – 10 000 m) of the troposphere.

The technology now in development is designed to work in these higher altitudes and so in the future these higher winds can also be utilized for energy production.

Economically Viable

A power plant based on HAWE-technology does not require an expensive tower, and as such its construction is more economical than that of traditional wind turbines.
