Julian Wheatland - Chairman

Julian Wheatland is the founder and Chief Executive of Hatton International.  Julian is an experienced financier and international project development expert.  

He specialises in cross-border and inward investment transactions, with a particular focus on international trade and economic development projects in emerging economies.  Julian is also an internationally recognised expert in assisting global defence and aerospace contractors with their economic development (offset) commitments to customer countries. Before founding Hatton International,  Julian was head of the International Division at the UK structured finance house, Consensus Business Group.  

At Consensus he built an $800m international investment portfolio and developed FDI projects in North America, Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Prior to Consensus,  Julian was a Founder of Edengene, the specialist strategic innovation business and was a Managing Consultant at PA Consulting, where he was an authority on entrepreneurial venture development.  Julian is a Chartered Engineer and an MBA graduate of The Wharton Business School.

Nigel Oakes - Director

Nigel Oakes was educated at Eton College and UCL, where he studied Psychology. In 1982 he joined Monte Carlo TV as a producer and in 1985 became the Head of International Production. Two years later, Nigel joined Saatchi and Saatchi as a Senior Producer. In 1989, he established the Behavioural Dynamics Working Group at University College London and in 1990 the Behavioural Dynamics Institute (BDi) was formed as a centre of excellence and a research facility for strategic communication. In 1993 Nigel set up Strategic Communication Laboratories and using the new communication methodology from BDi, ran election campaigns and national communication campaigns for a broad variety of international governments. Published clients include South Africa, USA, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Antigua, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Grenada, Nepal, Pakistan and Switzerland.

Alex Oakes - Director

Alex Oakes was educated at Eton College, Brookes University, Oxford and the Chartered Institute of Marketing, before moving to Hong Kong in 1992 to work with Cazenove & Co. In 1994 he was headhunted to run Drax Myanmar Ltd, an enterprising new venture in Burma, as Operations Director. In 1998, he joined Strategic Communication Laboratories, running the financial and administrative aspects of the business. In 2003, Alex established The Diagnostic Clinic with ex-Orange founder Hans Snook to introduce a one-stop diagnostic facility in London before handing over to a new CEO and returning to SCL as Finance Director.

Alexander Nix - Director

Alexander Nix was educated at Eton College and Manchester University. He began his career as a financial analyst with Baring Securities in Mexico and thereafter in the UK with Robert Fraser & Partners LLP, a boutique Corporate Finance and tax advisory firm. In 2003 Alexander left finance to join the SCL Group as a Director, where his responsibilities included growing SCL internationally, together with opening new markets for SCL\'s many behavioural products and services. In 2007 he directed his efforts to developing the elections division, including opening new offices in Washington DC and Delhi and growing the global staff to over 300 employees. Over the past 9 years Alexander has worked on more than 40 political campaigns in the US, Caribbean, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia.  In 2010 Alexander opened SCL Social, a not-for-profit, international development agency dedicated to applying SCL’s behavioural change communication strategies to humanitarian, health and development projects around the world.

Gavin McNicoll - Senior Advisor

Gavin has an M.A. in International relations and Philosophy from St Andrews University with Honours in Intelligence, Terrorism, U.S. Foreign Policy and the Middle East. He is the founder of Eden Intelligence, a specialist provider of small scale, high impact conferences on counter-terrorism and security related issues. Eden Intelligence is responsible for the International Terrorism and Intelligence programme, now a landmark event in the counter-terrorism calendar. In 2005 he founded a new programme of work (International Terrorism and Finance) to focus on financial intelligence cooperation issues on a G8 plus level. The meeting and agenda for ITF have been supported by assistance form the Home Office, Her Majesty’s Treasury, The Foreign & Commonwealth Office, The National Criminal Intelligence Service and The Metropolitan Police.

He has also advised law enforcement entities and litigation professionals on matters involving fraud, corruption, and illegal international transactions. David contributes to the policy and strategic planning debates through commentaries and publications on strategic business/financial/economic development, international debt, trade, and investment. He is the elected First Vice President of the Foreign Press Association and is co-authoring a book ‘Dust on the Chess Board” - a fictionalized insight into the activities of major global industries with geopolitical affairs between 1977 and 1982, with an alternative view of events leading to the Falklands War.

Sir James was educated in St. Vincent and at the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture in Trinidad and Tobago and the University of British Columbia, Canada. An agriculturist by profession, Sir James worked with the Government and in the Ministry of Overseas Development in London and as an agricultural research officer for the St. Vincent Government. Sir James has been a dominant figure in St. Vincent and the Grenadines for almost three decades. He became Prime Minister in July 1984 and was re-elected for a fourth successive term when his Party scored a resounding victory in the Parliamentary Elections of 15 June 1998. He initially entered politics in 1966 by winning a legislative seat as a candidate of the St. Vincent Labour Party. In 1975 he founded the New Democratic Party (NDP) becoming Parliamentary Opposition Leader until 1984.

Sir Geoffrey was educated at Durham School and St Catherine’s College, Cambridge, where he graduated with an MA Honours Degree in Law. From 1974 to 1997 he was elected Member of Parliament for Chertsey and Walton and following the General Election of May 1979, he was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Defence (RAF). In 1990, Sir Geoffrey was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party and in 1992 he was appointed Vice-Chairman (International) of the Conservative Party. At the General Elections in 1997 sir Geoffrey resigned from his seat in Parliament.

His previous experience includes working for an international democracy promoting NGO for programs in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Egypt, Thailand, and Malaysia. In that role he oversaw and trained governments, NGO\'s, and political parties on issues ranging from governance, policy development, communications, political strategy, organizational development, and external affairs.  He was also Deputy Chief of Staff and Spokesman for a senior member of the House International Relations Committee on Capitol Hill. He also served as Campaign Manager for the Liberal Party of Romania in every election between 1996 and 2007. After leaving public life, Dorin entered the private sector where he served variously as an adviser to energy firm Business Development Rompetrol Group, vice-president and president of ICAR Consulting SRL, vice-president of ICAR Business Research Ltd and as a non-executive director of Icarus Energy Ltd, Oltenia Motors Ltd, Technical Glass Ltd SC, International Trust Consult SRL and SC Serban Voda Tower LLC. Dorin began his  career in geology, and holds degrees in that discipline from the University of Cluj Napoca, before acquiring Masters degrees in Political Science from Jackson State University and the National Defence College in Bucharest .

As Project Manager, she has been responsible for a number of projects specializing in security issues in the Americas. She has worked in the French Consulate in Miami as the head of the Latin America desk. As Head of SCL Defence Richard is responsible for managing the day to day operations and strategic development of the SCL Defence team as well as all aspects of behavioural research, analysis and reporting. Over the last 7 years Richard has overseen numerous TAA and AB-MOE projects for UK and US government clients across Central, South and South East Asia, the Middle-East, Africa and Central America, often in hostile operational environments.  Prior to joining the SCL Defence team , Richard worked for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Richard holds a BA in the Geography of SE Asia and Africa from the School of Oriental and African Studies and an MA in War Studies from Kings College London, where he specialized in Terrorism.

Alexander Nix was educated at Eton College and Manchester University. He began his career as a financial analyst with Baring Securities in Mexico. In 1998 he moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he was co-founding partner of an eCRM and telephony outsourcing business. Between 1999 and 2001 he developed the business across the Mercosur region. 

In 2001 he returned to the UK to work for Robert Fraser & Partners LLP, a boutique Corporate Finance and tax advisory firm. Shortly after, he joined Robert Fraser Corporate Finance, where, as an Assistant Director, he worked as principal and in an advisory capacity on UK M&A and transaction work.

In 2003 Alexander left finance to join the SCL Group as a Director, where his responsibilities included growing SCL internationally, together with opening new markets for SCL's many behavioural products and services.

In 2007 he directed his efforts to developing the elections division, including opening new offices in Washington DC and Delhi and growing the global staff to over 300 employees. Gaby Van den Berg

Gaby Van den Berg - Head of SCL Training & Infrastructure

Gaby is a senior research fellow at the BDI.  Gaby is a Sociologist with an interdisciplinary academic background. After studying Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology in the Netherlands and Australia, she completed her MSc in Sociology at the LSE, specialising in Employment and Organisational Sociology with a particular focus on Gender, Interpersonal Relationships and qualitative research methods. Prior to joining BDi, Gaby worked as a manager in sales and service operations environments. During her last project she recruited and managed a team that pioneered a new government service designed to help Londoners measurably reduce their carbon emissions. She has extensive experience in developing and improving business processes, quality assurance and project management. Gaby has also worked for a consultancy that specialised in experiential hostile environment training, team & leadership development and selection centres. Clients include the FCO, NGOs, humanitarian aid agencies and a number of commercial organisations. Her research interests are clustered around the sociological paradigms of Social Systems and Interactionism.

Kieran Ward - Director of Communications

Kieran has worked as a graphic designer in some of the most prestigious agencies in London, including McCann Erickson, Publicis, Leagas Delaney and DHM - where he was Head of Design and Production. He is skilled and experienced in all areas of graphic design, from designing websites to printed brochures, brand identities to advertising campaigns. He has worked as head designer on global and award-winning campaigns for luxury phone brand Vertu, Whisky brand The Macallan and the Economist. Whilst at SCL he has been integral in producing creative strategy for many successful elections, media projects and online campaigns. He has delivered creative solutions for projects in Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. He is passionate about marrying creativity, business knowledge and technical understanding to deliver outstanding results.

Jonathan Wernick

Jonathan Wernick - Director of Finance

Jonathan took over as the Finance Manager SCL Group in January 2011. He assists the Finance Director and is responsible for a finance function at SCL. Jonathan is a qualified accountant. Before Joining SCL he read physics and philosophy at Bristol university before going on to study law, being called to the bar in 2007. Subsequently Jonathan joined Nyman Libson Paul as an auditor, completing his training contract in December 2010.

Marie-Adelaide de Nicolay

Marie-Adelaide de Nicolay - Group Operations Manager

As Group Operations Manager, Marie-Adelaide de Nicolay is responsible for the supervision and coordination of projects conducted in regions not managed by an in-country SCL office. This has included overseeing operations in countries across Europe, Africa and Asia and managing all components of a project from initiation to completion. Specifically, Marie-Adelaide is responsible for composing and structuring SCL’s timelines and budgets, organising all logistics and managing teams of researchers, project experts and election professionals. She excels in juggling the complex logistics of a project while simultaneously keeping the priorities and best interests of the client in mind. Prior to joining SCL, Marie-Adelaide was project manager at Paris EUROPLACE, promoting French financial services around the world, with a focus on former CIS countries. Marie-Adelaide began her career in French diplomatic institutions in Brazil and in Italy. She also has experience as a journalist in Russia and in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Marie-Adelaide speaks French (native), Italian (fluent), English (fluent), Portuguese (conversation) and Russian (conversation) and holds a MA degree in International Affairs from the renowned Sciences Po Paris University.

Marcus started his career as a lecturer in International Relations at Sichuan International Studies University in China before moving on to work in policy, public affairs, journalism, business development and diplomacy for commercial, governmental and intergovernmental organisations. He has worked all over the world including the UK, USA, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Turkey, India, Kenya, The Gambia, Ghana, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Turkey, Romania, Belgium, Austria and China. Prior to joining SCL, Marcus worked on projects as diverse as country reputation management, stakeholder outreach, election observation & management, organisational change, capacity building and conflict prevention for organisations including the UK Home Office, Hill & Knowlton and the Commonwealth Secretariat. He is trilingual and holds Masters degrees from the Universities of Edinburgh and St Andrews.

Max Paiano

Max Paiano - Group Analytics Manager

Max comes from an academic background in international relations and political theory and his research focuses on democratic transitions and republicanism. He has published papers on foreign policy and political conditionality, and has also worked as a research assistant on EU security governance and social policy. At SCL Max employs his methodological expertise in all phases of research projects. Max was educated at Royal Holloway and Liverpool John Moores University, before obtaining a PhD in Government at the University of Essex.

Danillo Angela - Head of SCL Caribbean

Danilo Angela is the co-founder and former director of A&HCG. Currently Danilo serves as a consultant to the company while he resides in Amsterdam completing his studies in Political Science. Danilo was educated at the University of Aruba and is dedicated to marketing, communications, and politics. During his studies at the University of Aruba Danilo functioned as an account manager at a local advertising agency before co-founding A&HCG in 2010 with his partner Curtney Hart.

Curtney Hart - Communication Director

Curtney Hart studied Marketing Management at HBO Nederland in the Netherlands. After his studies Curtney worked at Tech Data and SOTAQ. At these companies he worked for clients like Nederlandse Spoorwegen (the Dutch Railway Company), SONY, Microsoft, Nestlé, AEGON Bank, BMW Nederland and LG Electronics. After working in the Netherlands he moved back to Aruba where he worked for a local advertising agency as an account manager. In 2010 Curtney co-founded A&HCG where he is the director.

Amrish Tyagi - Head of SCL India

Amrish Tyagi was educated at Delhi University, where he received a master degree in Mass Communication. He has more than 10 years of experience in different Private Organization’s as well as participated as volunteers for various non-profitable entities. The experience and knowledge he gained throughout his career combined with his drive and entrepreneurial spirit led him to develop his own company.

The operation began with the establishment of Span House Customer Service Pvt. Ltd in 2006. He is the founder & MD of Span House Customer Service Pvt. Ltd (dealing in various Nationalized and commercial Banks) which stands for trust, interdependence, genuineness, risk and success now has flourished into a successful corporation with a head office in one of Metropolitan city Noida and 5 branch locations employing over 200 professionals. In 2006, he also acquired Wings Communication (P) Ltd, which was later established as OBI. Ovleno Business Intelligence (P) Ltd was started in 2010 with the objective of serving political and commercial sector.

He is attached with many well Known Educational Institutions like Dia Shiksha Group of Institutions and played a vital role in enhancement of level of Education System.

She has an in depth knowledge of political and social behavior of people and is involved in trend analysis of previous elections. She forecasts and analyzes the moves of different parties and thus helps the clients in formulation of counter strategy.

Ramya has done MBA with major in International Business and minor in Human Resource. She has also done M.Phil in Business Management. Her two Research Papers “Acquisition and retention of employees in the retail industry” and “Bank finance to women entrepreneurs” were published in the International Research Conference at DY Patil University. She has also Visited Singapore for an exchange program for duration of three months. She is specialized in field research and data collection techniques. Dr. Khaled Al Awamleh is the current Board Chairman of the Visions Center for Strategic and Development Studies in Jordan. He has acquired both his B.A in History and B.A in Political Sciences from the University of Michigan, both with high Distinction, and enrolled in the Cairo University to be granted an M.A degree in Comparative Politics with high Distinction and a Ph.D in International Relations by the year 2005. Besides his vast theoretical knowledge, Dr. Khaled has experience in the field of applied social and political sciences, worked on programs on religious and cultural diversity and has profound experience in strategic planning through long term experience in the field. In addition, Dr. Khaled has worked as a Cultural and Political consultant for the Provincial Reconstruction Team, as Executive Director at A&W Associates, and as Human Resource manager at the US Census Bureau in the Department of Commerce.

As SCL’s Head of Kenya, Sophie McCallum is a local area specialist and controls the internal logistics of in-country projects. Before joining SCL, Sophie worked in the risk management sector at Aegis in London, initially as an analyst and thereafter shifting her focus to business development. Prior to this, she worked in the development sector in both Lebanon and Kenya as a communication manager. She specialises in security issues and has previously advised European and French think tanks on such topics. She holds a BA in History from Sorbonne University and an MA in War Studies from King's College London.

Darius Antanaitis

Darius Antanaitis - Head of SCL Lithuania

Darius Antanaitis is the head of SCL operations in Lithuania. Darius has toured Iraq as an Information Operations Officer of the UK (InfoOps). His role included persuading Iraqis to support UK troops and to conduct deception operations in order to decrease number of casualties of British troops and to discredit high command of Iraqi insurgents.

Between August 1996 and March 2008 Darius was a platoon commander in the Lithuanian Army, which required him to plan, command, conduct and control the training of 130 soldiers as well as to plan and execute logistical support for the Company.

Darius has a BA in Military Science from Lietuvos Karo Akademija, Military Academy of Lithuania.

Dr. Octavian Mitu is the head of SCL operations in Romania. He has extensive experience in political communications, founding Zig Zag Magazin (1990-1995), one of Romanian’s most popular political publications. From 2000 to 2004 he was elected Member of Chamber of Deputies, Parliament of Romania and served as political counsellor at the Embassy of Romania in Washington, DC. In 2009, he founded his own company, Premier Strategist Inc., a marketing consulting firm located in Silver Spring, Maryland. Dr. Mitu has a Ph.D. in military science from National Defense University of Romania and an Executive MBA from University of Maryland University College.

Nigel Oakes was educated at Eton College and later established the Behavioural Dynamics Working Group at UCL, dedicated to the psychology of influence. In 1982 he joined Monte Carlo TV as a producer and in 1985 became the Head of International Production. Two years later, Nigel joined Saatchi and Saatchi as a Senior Producer. In 1989, he established the Behavioural Dynamics Working Group at University College London and in 1990 the Behavioural Dynamics Institute (BDi) was formed as a centre of excellence and a research facility for strategic communication. In 1993 Nigel set up Strategic Communication Laboratories and using the new communication methodology from BDi, ran election campaigns and national communication campaigns for a broad variety of international governments. Published clients include South Africa, USA, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Antigua, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Grenada, Nepal, Pakistan and Switzerland.

Nat joined SCL’s Defence team in March 2012, having recently qualified as a solicitor from Olswang LLP, an international law firm. Prior to training as a lawyer he worked in London and Beirut for the Next Century Foundation, a charitable organisation specialising in conflict resolution and second-track diplomacy. Nat’s particular focus within SCL Defence is on Middle Eastern political and security issues.

Natasha Mayer

Natasha Mayer - Director of Public Relations

Natasha comes to SCL with a broad range of media, strategic communications and public relations experience. As a news producer for Voice of America, she was instrumental in the launch of the first U.S. Government television broadcast into Pakistan. She was a producer for Fox News Channel where she worked on various programs developing stories appealing to the Fox News audience. Among her international projects was the management of Zagros TV in Iraq and Wattan TV in the West Bank. In the U.S, she has worked on numerous campaigns and projects as a senior communications consultant and is the author of a weekly political column. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in Film and Television production.
