Meet the World's smallest motor cars

P50P50

The latest arrival at the Lakeland Motor Museum won't break a land speed record however it is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as being the World's smallest, street legal motor car, ever produced.

A very rare and original example of the single seat Peel P50, made between October 1963 and December 1964, is now enthralling visitors at this popular South Lakeland visitor attraction.

About 50 Peel P50's were made by the Peel Engineering Company of the Isle of Man, but today only a handful are known to have survived.

The Peel 50 measures only 1.37m long by 1.04m high and weighs 59kgs. A 4.5hp, 49cc moped engine provides a top speed of 38mph and approximately 100mpg. The showroom price when launched was £199.

To create even more visitor excitement the Peel P50 has been displayed alongside its successor, a 1965 built Peel Trident. This car has a clear bubble top which earned it the nickname of the 'Terrestrial Flying Saucer'.

The Peel Trident has its own claim to fame as being accredited as the World's smallest two seat motor car.

Museum manager Edwin Maher said: "The Peel P50 and Peel Trident are splendid examples of engineering ingenuity, perhaps being before their time.

"They are quirky and I am amazed at how much intrigue they are creating among our visitors, particularly the younger ones who are absolutely fascinated by them.

"We are fortunate in being able to have these motoring icons on public display at the museum, but only until Easter when they have appearance commitments elsewhere."

Both the Peel P50 and Peel Trident are being retailed for the first time in almost 50 years by entrepreneurs Gary Hillman and Faizal Khan, partly financed by multi-millionaire and investor James Caan from the panel of the BBC Two programme Dragons' Den.
