Julian Manduca Award • 07 August 2005

Julian Manduca remembered as annual award launched

Friends and family of the late Julian Manduca gathered at the terrace at Gianpula to remember Julian Manduca. Irene Christ, Julian’s wife in a short and emotional address thanked those present for attending. Afterwards The Julian Manduca Award was launched.
Speaking on behalf of the initiators of the project, Saviour Balzan said that, The Julian Manduca Award was the best way to pay tribute to Julian’s memory. He said the presence of so many different people of conflicting ideas and opinions at the reunion was a tribute to Julian Manduca’s wide range of friends and the respect many had for him.
The award will target three distinct areas, each of which represent Julian Manduca as the man he was. The award will honour those in Malta who have worked individually or as a group in the following:
- to bring to the attention of the public the plight of minorities;
- a theatrical initiative that left an impact on the Maltese cultural scene;
- a significant contribution to environmentalism in Malta
The nominations have to be seconded and the award will be announced every year on the 17 May, the anniversary of Julian Manduca’s death.
The judges for this award plan to uphold Julian Manduca’s values of tolerance, his free spirit and admiration for those who contribute to society in more than one way. The award may be a cash gift and will be supported by annual contributions by companies, organisations, individuals and friends.
Those who are interested in making an annual pledge to The Julian Manduca Award are asked to contact Saviour Balzan on 21 382741 or to deposit a donation addressed to ‘The Julian Manduca Award, Bank of Valletta account 40014440975’.
