“I wanted to re-pot Blur like a plant. I got tired of being involved in comedy records.”

That’s Blur guitarist Graham Coxon, opening up to triple j back in ’97 about his desire to move the Britpop kings in a new direction. The four-piece’s anthemic 2.02 track (“Whoo-hoo!”) was originally nicknamed ‘Song 2’ as a working title. The name stuck. Blur’s eponymous fifth album was a departure from the cheeky chappy London sound of Parklife, moving towards a more American lo-fi feel. At one point ‘Song 2’ nearly didn’t make the album at all due to its brief length until their American label, Virgin, stepped in.

Blur would put their differences aside more than a decade later, reuniting to play UK festival Glastonbury in June ’09.

    Trent Reznor
  • Released

March 8, 1994 on The Downward Spiral LP
  • Produced by

    Trent Reznor, Flood
  • Recorded at

Le Pig, Beverly Hills; Record Plant Studios, A&M Studios, Los Angeles

“When I was working on The Downward Spiral it was turning out to be a pretty bleak, dark, depressing claustrophobic record,” NIN creator Trent Reznor confessed to triple j’s Costa Zouliou back in ’05. To record his second longplayer, Reznor had rented the house where Sharon Tate was murdered by the Manson Family. “I was pretty well into it when I [started] messing around with a beat,” he recalled. “I chopped up Iggy Pop’s ‘Nightclubbing’, and this stupid disco beat came out. I thought, ‘This is turning out pretty cool – but it may not be tough enough, dark enough, extreme enough.’ That was the censor in my head. It’s based on fear, my being afraid to try anything that might be outside these self-imposed parameters of Nine Inch Nails.”

  • Thunderstuck

  • AC/DC

  • 63 | Thunderstuck | AC/DC
  • Authors

    Angus Young, Malcolm Young
  • Released

September 21, 1991 on The Razors Edge LP
  • Produced by

    Bruce Fairbairn
  • Recorded at

    Little Mountain Sound, Vancouver, Canada

The lead single from AC/DC’s 14th album, ‘Thunderstruck’ spawned a drinking game (scull with every “thunder” – there are 33 in all), while rugby league’s Melbourne Storm enjoy spruiking it at games.

Trivia: did you know the Youngs’ sister, Margaret, was not only responsible for suggesting the band’s name (a warning label on a sewing machine) but also insisted Angus don his schoolboy costume onstage? “Because when I used to come home from school,” he guffawed to Double Jay back in the ’70s, “I’d come in the door and before my mum could grab me to go to the shops, or before my old man could ask me if I had been at school, I used to run and grab my guitar – and out the door.”

  • Released

November 30, 1982, on Violent Femmes LP
  • Produced by

    Mark Van Hecke
  • Recorded at

    Castle Studios, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

“It’s pretty obvious that it’s not the best song we have, but it’s catchy and it sucks people into the Violent Femmes,” bassist Brian Ritchie told Robbie Buck about their best-loved tune when the band stopped by triple j in ’07. Frontman Gordon Gano joked that it “sucks”.

While it was a highlight of the band’s sets on the ’07 Big Day Out, a few months later it was at the heart of a lawsuit Brian filed against Gordan for, among other royalty disputes, selling the song for US hamburger chain Wendy’s. The bassist now lives in Hobart, where he and his wife run a tea shop.

  • 65 | Born Slippy | Underworld
  • Authors

Rick Smith, Karl Hyde, Darren Emerson
  • Released

    July 1996
  • Produced by

Rick Smith, Karl Hyde, Darren Emerson
  • Recorded at

    UK

After wisely ditching the guitar funk of Underneath The Radar (and singer Karl Hyde’s penchant for dodgy ponytails and frilly shirts), Underworld rapidly established themselves at the forefront of the early ’90s techno renaissance.

It wasn’t until Mark Renton chose life at the end of Trainspotting that Underworld matched their peers’ wider acclaim. It reached No.12 in ’96’s Hottest 100, its “Lager, lager, lager / mega mega white thing” lyrics part of a generation’s lexicon – even among those then-alcoholic Karl was parodying.

The band admitted the iconic chord stabs were deliberately cheesy. Thirteen years on, Underworld continue to test the bounds of electronic music, while ‘Born Slippy.NUXX’ still makes hairs stand on end.

  • Tiny Dancer

  • Elton John

  • 66 | Tiny Dancer | Elton John
  • Authors

    Elton John, Bernie Taupin
  • Released

February 7, 1972 (single, later appeared on Madman Across The Water LP)
  • Produced by

    Gus Dudgeon
  • Recorded at

    Trident Studios, London

At the last count, Sir Elton had written a staggering 52,967,119 songs.* Few would have bet on this – his second Australian top 20 hit but far from his biggest – featuring in this list if it hadn’t been for Almost Famous. ‘Tiny Dancer’ soundtracked the film’s reconciliatory tour bus singalong and Elton himself acknowledges director Cameron Crowe gave the song a second wind.

Its original release predated his elevation to pop superstar, as seen in a ’71 interview on ABC’s GTK program. Elton said, “I don’t want to be a showbiz personality. We’ve tried to cut back on publicity but it’s just really impossible. You can’t stop people writing about you.” [* Not an exact figure]

  • Brick

  • Ben Folds Five

  • 67 | Brick | Ben Folds Five
  • Authors

    Ben Folds, Darren Jessee
  • Released

January 1, 1997 on Whatever And Ever Amen LP
  • Produced by

    Ben Folds, Caleb Southern
  • Recorded at

    Chapel Hill, NC

“They call her name at 7.30 / I pace around the parking lot / Then I walk down to buy her flowers / And sell some gifts that I got / Can’t you see / It’s not me you’re dying for / Now she’s feeling more alone / Than she ever has before”.

It was the most successful single of the North Carolina trio’s career, based on a not-so-sunny topic: an unwanted pregnancy tearing lovers apart. The downbeat ballad – which Ben admits was based on his own personal experiences – was out of character for the piano-led indie pop outfit, Ben struggling with finishing the tune until bandmate Darren Jessee came up with the chorus.

  • Dammit

  • Blink 182

  • 68 | Dammit | Blink 182
  • Authors

Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus and Scott Raynor
  • Released

September 23, 1997 on Dude Ranch
  • Produced by

    Mark Trombino
  • Recorded at

    Big Fish Studios, Encinitas, CA

“As a producer now,” Blink 182 bassist Mark Hoppus told Scott Dooley earlier this year, “I could say about five things that disappoint me in the recording of that song. The vocals are the main thing; I’m rushing the whole time: ‘Mark, calm down!’”

It’s precisely that super-charged youthful energy Mark conveys in Blink-182’s classic tale of teen romance angst that connected. The first single from their fourth LP and major label debut, ‘Dammit’ was produced by punk-oriented alt-rock legend Mark Trombino. It took just 2:45 for pop-punk to cross into the mainstream.

  • Grace

  • Jeff Buckley

  • 69 | Grace | Jeff Buckley
  • Authors

    Jeff Buckley, Gary Lucas
  • Released

August 23, 1994 on Grace LP
  • Produced by

    Jeff Buckley, Andy Wallace
  • Recorded at

    Bearsville Recording Studio, Woodstock, NY

The title track from Jeff Buckley’s one and only record was also its first single, co-written by former Captain Beefheart cohort Gary Lucas. Penned in Los Angeles before his move to New York City, the troubadour would explain to the crowd on Live at Sin-é (Legacy Edition) that the song was about “not feeling so bad about your own mortality when you have true love.”

“In recording [Grace] he was aware of how very much he was being watched in some ways,” admitted Jeff’s mother Mary Guibert to Richard Kingsmill, years later, “because he knew he was going to be compared to his father. So he had a high standard for himself.”

  • 70 | Breathe | The Prodigy
  • Authors

Liam Howlett, Keith Flint, Maxim Reality
  • Released

November 11, 1996 (single, later appeared on The Fat Of The Land LP)
  • Produced by

    Liam Howlett
  • Recorded at

    Earthbound Central, Essex, England

While the Prodigy’s mastermind is Liam Howlett, if it wasn’t for former Essex drug dealer Keith Flint the trio mightn’t have blown through the boundaries of punk and dance.

Keith’s killer rave moves earned him a full-time seat on the Prodigy tour bus, but he came into his own here, lending his John Lydon-esque vocals to ‘Breathe’. A feisty mix of punk-rock attitude, thumping big beat and electronica, the No.7 song on ’96’s Hottest 100 may not have had a lot of lyrical depth, but it cleverly played on the drama of a face-off between Keith and MC Maxim Reality.

“The guys are always knocking around when I’m in the studio and just there for support in the studio,” Liam told triple j in ’04. The explosive live energy of ‘Breathe’

I love AC/DC, and Thunderstruck is one of their top 5 songs, but if I was going to pick one sone it would be Long Way to the top or something of the greatest heavy rock album of all time - Back In Black

      • HG :

        13 Jul 2009 1:42:55pm

yep, agreed. T'struck is a great rock song, but Back in Black is the Greatest comback song in R&R history. Imagine being in the crowd for their first gig post Bon Scott, and they belt that song out!!!

just in regards to the 'youth' and 'triple j is a youth radio' comments. any youth with a bit of an education, broad music exposure and basically good taste will appreciate elton john, the beatles etc and the songs of any era chosen for there pure brilliance. When eva a song was recorded and it is genuinely good then it deserves a place.
ps i think Tiny dancer is awesome and i'm 25.

JJJ is not a youth radio station! how can it be? my dad was listening to it before it was called triple j and he is now 47 at what age do you turn off and change stations? JJJ is an altenative non commercial radio station suitable for ages 1 and up!

        10 Jul 2009 12:12:08pm

JJJ youth radio???, wish someone had told me that... i got into it from the the days of the adam and will breakky show and have not looked back since- no effin ads- no Coma FM shit that i used to listen to and teeny boppa rubbish that fills our airwaves. Yeehar for variety- new oz music and appealing to the ages- which is what the top 100 does- Im just waiting for U2, INXS, Dragon, Cold Chisel, and any other rippa song from yesterday, doesnt matter what you listen to or like as long as its loud- 42 and trying to get my kids to get off Chocolate STAR FM stations. Go the jays!

Geez, just because he is popular and widely recognised doesn't mean he doesn't deserve mention.

And you're surprised about this, that music that hardly anyone has heard of isn't on a countdown based on popular vote?

              • Hizzah :

                09 Jul 2009 1:55:43pm

It's a shame such music can't be appreciated by the masses in Australia.

You Am I and Pumpkins - both a HUGE breath of fresh air after boring Comfortably Numb. Am loving the countdown even though not all to my taste - it's great to see everyone's take on it all.

  • Samantha in Brisbane :

      • perksy :

        09 Jul 2009 11:18:06am

Bjork will be in the top 20 - Hyperballad

      • astrofrog :

        09 Jul 2009 11:25:37am

Portishead should also get fairly high in the list.

      • Alert Monster :

        09 Jul 2009 11:26:30am

I only chose Bjork, but regret adding more. Joni Mitchell's Yellow Taxi, Santogold's LES Artistes.

      • Electravisionmantra :

        09 Jul 2009 11:28:31am

Unbelievable really. I voted for PJ Harvey - Good Fortune and The Cranberries - Linger. Surely songs like this are more worthy in a Triple J Hottest 100 than 'Tiny Dancer', 'Comfortably Numb' or even bloody 'Around the World'. Don't get the popularity of the latter.

  • Ian :

    09 Jul 2009 11:06:34am

Comfortably Numb. This was my Number 1 vote, so I'm glad it made it on.

Now the real songs are coming through Pink Floyd etc

      • Michael :

        09 Jul 2009 1:43:58pm

they probably also make it in top 100 for 2WS and MIXFM.
I like Pink Floyd but i also like a lot of these songs that don't make your qualification of "real"

  • Qldsam :

    09 Jul 2009 11:05:24am

Amazing some Pink Floyd has made it in! I thought they died way back in the era of Dinosaurs! Probably means some more will be up the top, like Money or Wish You Were Here.

      • Bekky :

        09 Jul 2009 3:39:23pm

Pink Floyd will never, ever die.

        Don't you worry about that.

  • Louisa :

    09 Jul 2009 11:04:52am

WHAT! I thought Comfortably Numb would make it much higher on the list.

      • Scott (Perth) :

        09 Jul 2009 11:12:23am

Trying to decide whether I prefer this version or the one from Pulse...

But yeah, more floyd would be cool ;-)

          • astrofrog :

            09 Jul 2009 11:27:08am

I'm really hanging for my no. 1 - Wish You Were Here. But still, I know that other floyd songs are more popular. Hopefully it rates in the 100 somewhere.

      • Elise :

        09 Jul 2009 11:23:25am

I'm glad it made it, but agree, it should have been higher

        doop - doop
        stakabo - here we go
        sabrina - boys boys boys
cherry poppin daddys - zoot suit riot
        the bangles - eternal flame

      • The Captain :

        10 Jul 2009 7:59:07pm

Not well done actually, when you consider that over 800,000 voted in Triple J's 2008 Hottest 100. Not enough people voted and most of those that did voted for their favourite bands, not their favourite songs.

  • renstef :

Don't be like that Grant! Jeff is one of the most brilliant artists ever and deserves to be celebrated by the living. There's going to be at least 2 more of his songs in the countdown - Hallelujah and Last Goodbye. Hopefully Lilac Wine also!

  • Beck :

    09 Jul 2009 10:22:44am

I think that the poll captures the vastness of Australian music tastes. The poll isn’t going to represent everyone’s top 100 but nor should it. Music is art, and art is subjective. But I have to say so far that it’s represented all styles and eras of popular music. I most certainly am enjoying listing to it. Also for all those who say the Brit bands should be higher on this list… well perhaps, but this is Australia and I’m glad that a crap load of Aussie music is popping up in this list… we don’t need to adhere to our convict heritage anymore and idolise the Brits… good music should transcend heritage.

  • astrofrog :

    Nirvana??

Everyone knows Silverchair was a much better evolution of the same formula. They should be here instead of Nirvana.

    This is a joke....

            09 Jul 2009 10:32:03am

Excuse me. If Kurt was still alive, they wouldn't be on this list. Everyone knows this. Sheesh.

It's about respect for decent artists.

          • dan :

            09 Jul 2009 10:37:13am

surely you are joking? hen was the last time silverchair released an album that changed the face of modern music? i don't think they did nor will they. silverchair aren't in the same league as nirvana so do us all some justice and keep you're mouth shut

              • Cedric :

                09 Jul 2009 11:55:41am

                I think you meant 'when'.

Think about albums like Freak Show and Neon Ballroom. Everyone could relate to being a Freak, everyone could relate to lusting after a girl named Ana.

It makes more sense. Yeah, smells like teen spirit? Most teens probably smell really bad, why would I want to smell their spirit? That's silly.

      • Skin :

        09 Jul 2009 10:29:11am

Were you born an idiot? Nirvana completely changed the face of music worldwide with teh release of Nevermind. Silverchair pretty much rode on their coatails (no offence to Silverchair, whom I had great respect for prior to their most recent album).

          • Roy A :

            09 Jul 2009 10:50:33am

silver chair will tell you themselves that they were originally a clone of nirvana. they have a good sound and could possibly be in oz's top 100 but they cant compete on a world stage.

um excuse me Lizzy but if the kings of leon sex on fire and coldplay yellow can make it into THE HOTTEST 100 OF ALL TIME then the NIN closer should be in the top 5. NINs have had a very long career with a huge dedicated fan base and never once sold out so there!!!!!!!

  • Rachel :

    09 Jul 2009 10:17:18am

Ok....Daft Punk's good...but number 58? Well I reckon electro kids who love parklife have had their say. I looooved that Augie March got in there, and Johnny Cash. Well done for those who can appreciate what brilliant music is!

  • Luke :

hopefully 'don't fight it' gets in there.. it doesnt matter if it's mainstream.. mainstream songs can be good even great

      • Robbie :

        09 Jul 2009 1:21:40pm

Luke i hear you mate anyhow the panics have been supported by triple j for many years, whereas some of these artists on the list have not as they would be considered to mainstream. There should be no limitiations placed on a song because of other prople perception. Dont fight it for number one............

  • perksy :

    09 Jul 2009 10:14:11am

really please this hasn't turned out to be hottest 100 of the last two years - great to hear the master Johnnie Cash in there... not too sure about Augie March.... but hey that's what makes everyone different

  • Tezza :

    09 Jul 2009 9:59:04am

Where is the tool?? Freaking awesome instrumentaly and lyrically hoping they appear a little later on in the count. Prob nothing from 10 000 days but Opiate Aenima and Lateralus to an extent were amazing albums

  • Quinny :

    09 Jul 2009 9:54:19am

i don't know WTF some of these AC/DC songs are doin in here, particularly Thunderstruck, the stuff from that late in the band's catalogue is re-hashed, re-packaged drivel. Classic Aussie band, 1st 2 albums were worth the price but it ended there. Their inclusion here is bogan nostalgia in operation

  • razor :

    09 Jul 2009 9:52:01am

wow...you guys really take this seriously don't you...

  • Jope :

    09 Jul 2009 9:45:37am

Aight well I did this for the first 20, so let's go blow by blow again.

    Stones: average song
    Bowie: decent
Pumpkins: great song. I have mixed feelings about the band, but this is a modern classic.
    Gotye: surprising. Average song.
Roses: did not see this coming. Forgettable, in that I've forgotten what it sounds like entirely. I do remember it being kinda nice though.
Green Day: A footnote in music. This sucks.
    Nirvana: boring.
    Clash: rules. Raw f**king power.
Shins: The Shins did not change my life, and Garden State is not even a good movie.
    Smiths: this rules.
    Prodigy: uh no thanks.
    Buckley: nice.
Blink: wow you are a child if you like this band/song.
Ben Folds Five: OK, but they had better songs.
Elton: not bad, I'm hoping for Your Song in the list sometime.
    Underworld: pumpin'. Best dance song.
    Femmes: decent.
    AC/DC: heh more like... ThunderSUCK.
NIN: you want to WHAT Trent? Oh, oh my. Well that's rude. I neither like nor dislike this song.
Blur: eh it's OK I guess.

Overall this was alright I guess. Here's hoping today's is a killer.

        Agree almost 100%with these comments.

Some of these songs don't deserve to be in the list

  • Mick :

    09 Jul 2009 9:39:49am

The fact that Blink 182 has a song in the top 100 songs of all time has completely ruined the integrity of this poll. None of their songs should even feature in the top 100,000 songs of all time let alone the top 100.

  • Paolo :

    09 Jul 2009 9:05:46am

I can't believe some of the comments I have read here!! This is NOT a Top 100 songs that are only played/heard on JJJ. It is a Top 100 songs of ALL time I believe!!! So, there will be songs here that various people commenting will not like or have never heard of. There is more to music than just what is played on JJJ. Rock music began in the 50's and continues to this day. Some of you should embrace music's heritage.

      • kylie :

        09 Jul 2009 9:55:32am

i agree. people need to stop complaining! they have all been voted in, so obviously a majority of the half a million people that voted liked them! i think the countdown is awesome so far. yeah there are some songs i don't like, but hey thats my personal taste.

      • selina :

        09 Jul 2009 10:26:24am

well said Paolo. Voting is open to everyone, regardless of their taste in music. It was "vote for your favourite songs". Ok, so I was surprised to hear Elton John on here, but should Elton fans exclude his tracks from their list in an effort to appear cool to other Triple J listeners? That would be a dictatorship, not a democracy which would therefore make voting pointless if you where influenced by what others would think.

  • Michelle :

    09 Jul 2009 9:02:39am

  • Donsta :

    09 Jul 2009 8:32:54am

Tiny Dancer! I almost fell out of my chair but I didn't know that it was in a popular movie. It's off my most favourite Elton John album though. Nice work Triple J listeners. I voted in the first Hottest 100 20 years ago and it's great to see the diverse mix of songs in the new Hottest 100.

  • Casey Hedley :

    09 Jul 2009 7:18:02am

I'm pretty impressed with the nubers 61 to 70. I think that alot of the earlier songs were great songs but they were the run of the mill 'great' songs. I just want to see more Australian songs in the mix. My top ten only had 3 songs that weren't Australian, though I think this will start happening further down the line, I hope.

  • Shtev :

    09 Jul 2009 2:36:05am

I can't believe Belinda Carlisle hasn't got in the list yet. I bet that's because she'll be top 20.

  • Harrison :

    09 Jul 2009 2:27:59am

The Cure's Just Like Heaven needs to feature pretty soon. Other than that the list is shaping up nicely. Classic songs on here, great to see Skinny Love up there, a real nice surprise for me to be honest. Bring on some Radiohead, and we're set.

  • Dom :

    09 Jul 2009 2:00:20am

also- does anyone reckon the go betweens will feature at all? streets of your town surely? we need some aust music!! and none of that hip-hopety-hop

      • Stew :

        09 Jul 2009 3:03:06am

I really hope so... The Go-Betweens were such a brilliant band R.I.P Grant McLennan

I agree with the Flaming Lips epic, should be somewhere in the top 100.

I hope to see another Smiths song, but probably won't - it's a Hottest 100 of all time, not a most influential 100 of all time...

I wonder too if there will be anymore Zep - Immigrant song or Ramble On...??

  • Dom :

    09 Jul 2009 1:56:13am

no radiohead as of yet. i dont reckon theyll feature that much at all- only because everyone is so spoilt for choice when it comes to songs. imagine if this was top 100 albums. radiohead would kill it!!

The Flaming Lips- Do You Realise better feature highly. that song blows my mind everytime i hear it

  • DaneO :

    09 Jul 2009 12:55:05am

The top ten songs will all be older songs ie pre-2000.
I'm going with Teen Spirit, throw your arms around me, Stairway to heaven, Enter Sandman, Alive, Bohemian Rhapsody, Hey Jude, Paranoid Android, Sympathy for the devil. Couple of roughies in there, but definitely songs that are timeless, and accessible to the masses. Now its time to wait and see...

      • adam :

        09 Jul 2009 7:57:57am

Top 10 pretty similar to 1997 DaneO. Missed Mettalica One... be up there mate!Top 5 looks OK. Probly see some Smelly Finger, they deserve it.

  • sailormars1978 :

    09 Jul 2009 12:46:26am

Love will tear us apart must be up there in the top 10, I reckon. And How soon is now by the Smiths. Also, March of the Pigs by NIN! We need some louder stuff in the top 10. Although I am not complaining at all about the selection so far!

  • Philopoemen :

    09 Jul 2009 12:30:04am

<sigh> people really need to go back and check out the previous Hottest 100 of All Time before they start getting too emotionally invested in the results this year.

It's surprising to see so many songs that rated highly slipping back into the >50 half.

  • Bob :

    09 Jul 2009 12:28:57am

    ABBA

  • Rayzie :

    09 Jul 2009 12:27:42am

I've loved every part of this countdown so far. I have voted for none of these songs, but the more varied and suprising the nominations are (like Tiny Dancer, great song) the better! It proves that it isn't just another 'pick your favourite from this list' poll that you get sometimes, and demonstrates the range of listeners and tastes that this great station has. How many entries were there... half a million? These songs weren't voted by accident. The most annoying thing is people complaining about the ORDER of songs. Just be happy that your song made it on there. All time is a pretty broad range to choose from (I know this, I'm a scientist).

  • Laurence :

    09 Jul 2009 12:15:52am

In hindsight I probably should have voted for more songs that would actually get in. My number 1 was 'Oh Comely' by Neutral Milk Hotel...it would be deserving but there's no chance whatsoever.

However, I will be so disappointed if neither Debaser nor Where Is My Mind? by Pixies gets in. Gotta be some Radiohead up in this bitch too.

Some serious shit so far though - Kings of Leon only got in thanks to popularity runoff. Coldplay? Honestly? If there's MGMT I think I'll lose faith in the majority of triple j listeners for ever.

      • Guy :

        09 Jul 2009 10:13:09am

"Bulls on Parade" coming in at number 89???!!! And then Coldplay - Yellow beating it at number 88???!!! I almost pissed and spewed at the same time. What's wrong with you people? This is no song filled with more energy than Bulls on Parade and it is being disrespected with an 89. Disguseted and appalled, should have been in the top 10.

I agree. Australian Hip Hop is the worst thing to happen in this country musically ever. The music doesn't go beyond "we are bogans." They can sample as many soul classics as they want, I'm just going to sit and wish I was listening to the original track.

Black Eyed Peas have like 100x more soul than Miles Davis just saying.

People who like Jazz are either/or:

                - Old
                - Wankers

              • Harrison :

                09 Jul 2009 2:23:14am

The difference between Davis and the Black Eyed Peas is that Davis was original and pioneered a sound, instead of jumping on the RnB bandwagon and ripping off classic guitar riffs. Yes, Dick Dale's song Misorlou is the only reason that Pump It is tolerated. Also, Rick Bobby, you changed your argument from '100x more soul' to more groove. Difference, soul requires emotion and feeling, groove requires large amounts of money for producers and writers to do it for you. Has anyone heard the Black Eyed Peas sing live. Car Wreck, they are so studio made as to be a joke. I am instantly stupider for reading your opinion Ricky Bobby.

                09 Jul 2009 10:36:30am

oh goodness, how embarrassing for BEP that they have fans who are so naive and ignorant. I somehow think that the BEP wouldn't agree with your narrow-minded opinions. They wouldn't be producing the type of music they generate if it weren't for the influences of the earlier greats who laid the foundations for dance and R&B, which heavily samples from the early stuff.

"Blue 'n' boogie". And if you want more soul than the BEP you could go for just about anything in the Miles Davis catalogue. "Round Midnight" or "Bye Bye Blackbird" are two great examples.

                >> groove requires large amounts of money for producers and writers to do it for you

What are you even talking about? Do you know anything about music at all???

                >> Groove is the sense of propulsive rhythmic "feel" or sense of "swing" created by the interaction of the music played by a band's rhythm section (drums, electric bass or double bass, guitar, and keyboards).

  • Hope so :

    08 Jul 2009 10:58:07pm

I would be over the moon if Divinyls or B52s made it in...

  • ANGSTandson :

    08 Jul 2009 10:56:05pm

Bands that HAVE to be in the next 60:

    Silverchair
    Powderfinger
    Ben Harper
The Beautiful Girls (Periscopes at least)
    Hilltop Hoods
    The Grates
    Drowning Pool

If they all don't get in there at least once then we ought to be ashamed of ourselves.

      • Jon :

        08 Jul 2009 11:19:55pm

Yeah i agree, hopefully the Beautiful Girls get a look in. morning sun and periscopes.

          • ANGSTandson :

            08 Jul 2009 11:29:22pm

yeah also, don't know why i didn't include them in my earlier listing, but Jack Johnson and Xavier Rudd definitely need to get in there! Along with Karnivool!!

            The list goes on.

              • DPM :

                09 Jul 2009 10:13:50am

I saw Jack Johnson on the short list but as a song title it just had - 'entire catalog'
Perfect, htey all sound the same anyway.

Xavier Rudd, Jack Johnson..... They are musical benzodiazepines!

They put you to sleep with their same same, airy fairy shite. If they make it in I will their wrists. Or fall asleep! ha ha

      • Laurence :

        09 Jul 2009 12:12:53am

There just has to be some Radiohead in there somewhere. It'd be absolutely criminal for copycat shit like Coldplay to get in and not Radiohead.

I am loving this countdown. Just the variety alone is out of this world. Proud to say I have all these songs on my Mp3 player. All except "Skinny Love"

  • Ben :

    08 Jul 2009 10:14:15pm

Bring on the inevitable half-dozen Cure songs, I say!

Also, Love Will Tear Us Apart for #1.

Also, where's the Rick Astley at?

      • paris jackson :

        08 Jul 2009 10:26:54pm

Ben was my favourite song of dad’s, perhaps because it was about love for a rat. Maybe love will keep us together will be number one.

      • DPM :

        09 Jul 2009 10:18:08am

That Rick footnote completely screwed your cred

  • elvis christ :

    08 Jul 2009 10:07:52pm

Elvis here, turning in my grave. I always liked that young John Spencer's band the Blues Explosion's song bellbottoms. I am sure the general public are with me on that.

      • CharlieMort :

        10 Jul 2009 5:52:32pm

Dunno about the general public, but "Bellbottoms" is fantastic! Somehow I doubt we are going to see any JSBX in this list.

  • Geoff :

    08 Jul 2009 9:44:57pm

  • Spaceman :

  • Flapper :

    08 Jul 2009 9:36:17pm

It ain't so bad so far, I despise the Stone Roses, otherwise pretty agreeable. Modest Mouse getting in has made my night, what a fantastic band they are.

      • Kristian :

        08 Jul 2009 9:54:07pm

The Stone Roses > Modest Mouse

More Smiths and some Libertines please.

          • Flapper :

            08 Jul 2009 10:21:47pm

But... Brick... If there's one song... Yes, it's slow, whiney, not so great. Welcome to my christmas 2008.

What I am enjoying as I listen to the countdown being broadcast live or the streaming podcast is that even if the song is not to my particular tastes, they are all awesome songs. I can appreciate that each song has a particular power that at a given place and time will serve as part of the biography of someone's life, often my own. It is like a sonic photo album, with many weird little moments or life-changing events that have been part of my life brought to the surface, often with a bittersweet resonance.

    Thanks Australia.

Aaaahhh - These songs bring back amazing memories... Thanks JJJ for airing what we voted for.
All songs fab in their own way (except Rick Astley, which will NOT be funny!) :)
Anyone know what song 101 was?

      • Zombi Nimble :

        08 Jul 2009 10:36:43pm

I agree. The Rick Astley joke has already been done. This is a proper, serious poll, not some crappy MTV award. Worst thing the morning show ever tried to do.

  • Intrigued :

    08 Jul 2009 8:10:27pm

The absence of female voices from the list so far may be related to the way that most people voted - i.e. sitting at a computer and being interested in lists (more of a guy thing?). Given the skew to this demographic, I reckon bands like Muse and Radiohead might go well.

    Anyway, cricket's started!

  • xavier lane :

    08 Jul 2009 6:40:10pm

    hahahahaha,

whats with all the talk of linkin park, arent they a bunch of 30 something hasbeens still trying to sing songs of teenage angst...

whats with ragging on the content of the countdown, how many 100 000 people voted, i think its a fair representation of what folks like.

      • Thom :

        08 Jul 2009 6:56:02pm

agreed. have linkin park ever been played on JJJ?

          • DaneO :

            09 Jul 2009 12:44:21am

Yeah, I'm fairly certain 1 step closer and papercut were JJJ mainstays turn of the millennium. Nu-metal was totally in vogue. Korn, Limp Bizkit, I even think Staind got a run... What, didn't you do it all for the nookie too?

  • PLEASE :

Sorry mate, I am not a big fan of Jeff Buckley although he had a lovely voice... he is not really my cup of tea! I think some people must just like that type of music ... I am enjoying the variety of the countdown! There are songs I am surprised by too! But it is all fun ;-)

              • Buttons :

                08 Jul 2009 8:44:10pm

Its like how people become obessed with Sylvia Plath's Bell Jar. They've got talent but only ever produced one piece of work so everyone who fell in love with had to concentrate on that, not spread to love out over all their works.

              • Kyle. :

                08 Jul 2009 10:01:44pm

Jeff Buckley was an incredible singer, and quite a good guitarist, especially in his live shows. I'll admit there are a few of his songs that are not so great, but songs like "Grace" and "Mojo Pin" make up for that:)

      • bron :

        08 Jul 2009 7:53:13pm

His father (Tim) was way better.....

      • Cath :

        08 Jul 2009 8:38:43pm

You obviously didn't see him live!

  • Matt :

    08 Jul 2009 6:29:28pm

This is not top 100 artists of all times, its top 100 songs - user voted songs - so if your favourite 100 songs are not in here, just means more people out there like different music to what you do! SHOCK!!!

personally i wanna see some weezer get in here

      • Sass :

        08 Jul 2009 6:38:41pm

Exactly Matt - Everyone needs to get over it and realise it's not their personal hottest 100.

  • Swaas :

    08 Jul 2009 6:28:54pm

yeah i agree, the best acts votes will be sepperated over there multiple great songs Take radiohead for example what song do you vote for where as a band with just one stand out song will go further. if "jessies girl" makes it im going to kill someone

      • George :

        08 Jul 2009 7:17:32pm

This is a fantastic point, that is that bands with less hits will probably have more votes per song as the voters have less songs to choose from. It's unavoidable though.

      • Ben :

        08 Jul 2009 10:16:03pm

They should have just made it the Hottest 100 artists of all time and played a random popular song for each.

Actually, that'd be really interesting to see.

          • Trashy :

            09 Jul 2009 6:00:35am

            agree....

          • Vegas Baby :

            09 Jul 2009 2:01:44pm

Fantastic idea! Top 100 artists of all time - start lobbying JJJ now!

  • Henno :

    08 Jul 2009 6:25:29pm

It annoys me when a song gets into a list like this when it has had a 'second wind'. Tiny Dancer wouldn't come anywhere near this 100 if not for 'Almost Famous'. In 5 years it wouldn't make it - though I do remember being on a Croatian cruise recently and every man and his dog was singing it because of that movie. The others all have JJJ cred however.

  • mim :

    08 Jul 2009 6:23:13pm

"one hit wonders" trashy? which one of the artists for numbers 61-70 is a one hit wonder? news to me!
I am pretty happy so far, and thanks heaps triple j for getting out the hot 100 of all time again! you rock!

  • Mishca :

    08 Jul 2009 6:22:00pm

im really happy with the countdown so far....and i reckon that if u did vote for Elton John then good on ya...not my cup of tea.. but it doesnt make u an inbred!!!!

  • Sarah :

    08 Jul 2009 6:20:51pm

    Go Ben Folds Five.

  • Trashy :

    08 Jul 2009 6:13:12pm

I actually don't like Jeff Buckley, but am horrified that he could be beat by Blink, as for this list i believe it can never please everyone, as one other person said its all about the one hit wonders not great artists. And i can also see that nothing i voted for has been chosen... Maybe i picked the top 10?

  • steve :

    08 Jul 2009 6:13:12pm

    thats twice for ACDC
    let the rock begin
its good to see some of the true pioneers of rock shinning through like rolling stones
    beatles
    bob
    ACDC
    bowie
    cant wait 4 more
    bring it on
and i think we will be hearing more from ACDC
    rock on

  • Iceman :

    08 Jul 2009 6:12:14pm

Blister in the sun is the worst song ever made! People who voted for it are rubbish

  • shabangabang :

    08 Jul 2009 5:59:03pm

I hate Elton John, what sort of inbred would vote for that crap!

      • Echelon :

        08 Jul 2009 6:36:38pm

Elton John is a pretty weird person but an amazing song writer. This batch of 10 is the best so far. Prodigy and Under world rock on !! NIN and ACDC, worthy as always. Struggling a bit with Dammit, just seems like idiot-rock to me and the femmes seem like repetitive - boring - rock. Love this countdown! Go Pink Floyd!!

          • riddlez :

            08 Jul 2009 6:50:02pm

Deserved or not, Dammit was always very likely considering it reached #20 last time.

  • Bel :

    08 Jul 2009 5:55:30pm

YAY, Born Slippy. My first and probably only vote in the Hot 100. Loving the countdown, so many songs I forgot about that need to be added to my music collection!

  • Rapha :

    08 Jul 2009 5:54:37pm

Brick definitely derserved to be there and a perfect indication of triple j music. As for those dissin Born Slippy ive never heard a better dance track.

  • sb :

    08 Jul 2009 5:53:31pm

ac/dc aren't anything. It doesn't even count as music. If pain was a sound their music would be it.

      • Jas :

        11 Jul 2009 2:25:00pm

if ac/dc are a joke how come they have lasted for so long and still selling out tours in record time you wanker

  • caity :

    08 Jul 2009 5:52:26pm

so happy with blink. would of loved them to be a lot higher but still they're in it! and jeff buckley too

  • Ryan :

    08 Jul 2009 5:50:04pm

Wrapped to see born slippy! list is startin to look better n better

  • tuttifruitti :

    08 Jul 2009 5:49:41pm

Love most of them so far, but I have to agree with Hairydog, Tiny Dancer??? Come on. Just my opinion... Better be some women sometime soon... Cornflake Girl (Tori)

  • Beesley :

    08 Jul 2009 5:49:20pm

This is bollocks, nirvana's lithium should have beaten every one of the songs in this 10, but as i said in my last comment these lists can be stupid, as seen by Kings of leon taking out 90.

      • Echelon :

        08 Jul 2009 6:32:25pm

I agree. These polls can be all over the place. In Max's Top 5000 of all time Britanny Spears "Hit Me Baby One More Time" polled higher than every single Beatles song. WTF?
Lets not take it to seriously hey people.

  • Matt :

    08 Jul 2009 5:47:23pm

i thought dammit would make it in a bit higher but am stil happy that it is on the list

  • russell (triple j) :

  • snwv :

    08 Jul 2009 5:44:56pm

I hope there's some Radiohead, Tool and Bjork in the top 60.

  • Maz :

    08 Jul 2009 5:43:36pm

How on earth does that blink 182 get in there at all....or ever worse that brick by bff terrible

  • Carmine :

    08 Jul 2009 5:40:19pm

very surprised jeff buckley- grace didnt make it higher thatn 69. surley better than blink 182...but loving the top 100!

  • Schmuck :

    08 Jul 2009 5:39:07pm

This is a much better list as it has mad people like Prodigy and Blink 182. Whilst I am disappointed there isn't more Kings of Leon or Linkin Park songs on here, at least they have moved on to the 90s.

Also what is Elton John doing there, let alone a song no one has heard of? They may as well put Queen Latifah.

      • Jankas :

        08 Jul 2009 5:46:49pm

      • tuttifruitti :

        08 Jul 2009 5:54:30pm

Tiny Dancer is one of the most famous songs of all time!!! Where have you been, under a rock?? I hate it too, but it IS a classic... and Linkin Park?? Man, you should listen to some commercial station.

      • Bella :

        08 Jul 2009 5:54:34pm

A song no-one has heard of? Have you seen Almost Famous?

Elton John isnt exactly my cup of tea usually but I do love Tiny Dancer, and its def the song that our generation knows best from him.

      • stew :

        08 Jul 2009 5:56:34pm

      • Doggy :

        08 Jul 2009 6:00:14pm

if any linkin park! or any more kings of leon gets in it will be the biggest disgrace!

          • whyie :

            08 Jul 2009 6:18:51pm

AMEN doggy schmuck ur name says it all

      • George :

        08 Jul 2009 7:12:11pm

I'm going to pray that you are under 18 because Kings of Leon and Linkin Park aren't anywhere NEAR the calibre of Elton John, and this is coming from a guy who will admit to owning Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory and not being a fan of Elton John.

Linkin Park was gimmicky and didn't have any real substance, it was just another formulaic pop rock teen angst song with the 'novelty' of a rapper.

Elton John on the other hand.. Well I don't think I even need say anything, such a beautiful voice, simple melody, genuine emotion, a sound that's timeless, not 'trendy'.

          • Kyle. :

            08 Jul 2009 10:05:40pm

            Agreed.

          • Schmuck :

            08 Jul 2009 10:45:10pm

I don't think you should feel guilty owning a Linkin Park album. There seems to be a lot of people who have a slight identity crisis just because they feel moderately in tune with the angst and emotion that Linkin Park can convey.

Once again though, is Triple J trying to be 'trendy' or 'timeless' when they rate or release music? Is something like Elton John really in the mold of something a Triple J person would listen to?

I think 'trendy' when I think Triple J, without being 'mainstream'

              • Laurence :

                09 Jul 2009 12:20:45am

Do you really think Elton John, one of the most famous and accomplished singer/songwriters of all time, is a trend? I think trends don't typically last for decades.

If I didn't know better, I'd suspect a definite undercurrent of homophobia in these comments.

              • Schmuck :

                09 Jul 2009 9:54:09am

                You're not listening!

Elton John would be classified as 'timeless'. Therefore, he doesn't belong in Triple J's sacred Top 100.

If you are homophobic good luck to you in your future life interactions with other males.

              • Schmuck :

                09 Jul 2009 10:02:49am

Oh, now I see what you meant...

Well, if I was homophobic why would i be listening to Linkin Park still years later?

Elton John - Tiny Dancer pffffttt!

I voted for DJ Ironik (ft Chipmunk & Elton John) version.

Looking like a definite top 50 showing if Elton got in at 66

      • Bella :

        08 Jul 2009 5:56:00pm

The re-mixed song makes me want to cut my ears off, its terriby.
The original Elton version rocks! Lets pray that the re-mix doesnt make it anywhere near the top 100!

          • louraz :

            08 Jul 2009 6:55:56pm

  • pudgie1 :

Stone Roses - Fools Gold still should have been in the top 50!

  • jessica :

    08 Jul 2009 5:28:30pm

not very impressed, considering the calibre of songs we've had before this bunch.

with the exception of NIN and buckley - sounds like a party mix compilation.

      • RG :

        08 Jul 2009 6:56:04pm

whats wrong with playing NIN at a party? haha i do.

but other than 'Sex on Fire' and 'Blister in the Sun', im happy with the countdown so far and i look forward to finding out who takes the top spot.

besides, why whinge at JJJ, its us who voted for these songs. and if you didnt, maybe you should have

  • George :

    08 Jul 2009 5:23:58pm

Grace should have been higher, Jeff Buckley was perfect.

Closer was good, Breathe was good.

      • Hev :

        08 Jul 2009 5:45:03pm

Yeah, but don't panic -- there's still Last Goodbye and Lover You Should Have Come Over and Hallelujiah to go! At least one of them has to be in there higher up in the countdown.

  • Hairydog :

    08 Jul 2009 5:23:42pm

I am not an Elton fan and think it strange that he would appear on jjj but Tiny Dancer is an all time classic.

      • Bayman :

Bayman you're a fucking moron if you think that Elton John and Britney Spears are similar in any way. You might want to toddle over to wikipedia and actually learn who he is.

  • newo :

    08 Jul 2009 5:23:02pm

Good 2 c gr8 songs like Thunderstruck and Dammit in their much better then some songs Born slippy? Closer? whaaaaaaaaaa?

      • poppytea :

        08 Jul 2009 7:04:10pm

according to you, i on the other hand much prefer the latter. it's kind of nice to see that there's quite a mix, having said that i still don't particularly like the list so far. i'm not sure if it's already been said but i'd love to see how many votes each song actually did get.

  • madeleine :

    08 Jul 2009 5:19:03pm

Good to see Underworld's Born Slippy get a place in there, classic britpop. Surprised at how high Brick was but I cant argue its a good song. I thought song 2 should be higher but good to see australia hasnt forgotten about blur.

            08 Jul 2009 7:04:12pm

too mainstream this poll sounds like some of you r mmm listeners whats with the elton john song

          • Robbie :

            09 Jul 2009 1:34:59pm

2007 j award went to the panics so they are supported, mainstream no one would be able to give me a definition of mainstream if they tried its just a limitation created to pidgeon hole bands and artists who are willing to try and promote themselves. The panics have potential to be great and iconic to Australia they can not do this singing to 5000 wannabe indie rock affiliates sitting on wet grass waving their lethargic hands through the air to show involvement. Dont fight it deserves to be there more then alot of other songs so far, am i supported on this thesis?

  • stew :

    Elton John.what the
Is it not Triple J's Hottest 100 of all time no the pop princess of the UK Hottest 100

      • selina :

        08 Jul 2009 5:39:42pm

Bayman, it's the Triple J listeners' Hottest 100, not the - Triple J "choose your favourite songs, but only songs that we approve of" Hottest 100. The songs making the list are indicative of who listens to Triple J and what a broad taste in music those listeners have - appealing to everyone and anyone.

          • BB :

            08 Jul 2009 5:53:44pm

      • Davo :

AC/DC are legends of rock, and are massively associated with it's history. However, in saying that, i must agree. Jimmy Barnes is also a legend of rock, yet if i see any of his songs on here i will start tying the noose.

          • Matt :

            08 Jul 2009 5:35:13pm

Look I have to say i don't mine the odd Aca daca in here - but I mean really - Thunderstruck? Give anythiung from Bon/Dirty Deeds albumn anytime over this!!!

Good call. Some Jailbreak would of also been nice or something off Highway to Hell ahead of the Brian Johnston days.

Indeed, legends of aussie rock and everything, but picking Thunderstruck is like saying your favourite Metallica song is off Load. Shocking, people from western sydney should be barred from voting.

Thunderstruck? You have got to be kidding me. The Bon Scott era kills Brian Johnson any day of the week, but if you were going to include anything from there it would come off Back in Black. And you would stop there. There is mention of a drinking game in the little synopsis, I am assuming that is what garnered the votes.
And don't get me started on Enter Sandman!

Didn't get to catch all of the hottest 100 played today but did manage to hear some on the way home in the car and what drive it was, radio cranked up all the way...underworld, violet femmes, ac/dc, nine inch nails...loved it!!

Is it just me or are we all wondering where are all the female artists on this list?? Aretha Franklin, Tracey Chapman to name two?? I agree that recent songs shouldn't be up there as we don't yet know if they will stand the test of time.
