On the heels of their collaboration on Torchwood: Miracle Day, Starz Entertainment and BBC Worldwide Prods have signed a multi-year production agreement. Under the deal, the two companies will co-develop and co-finance multiple series that will be produced by BBC Worldwide Prods. The potential output is estimated at more than 100 hours of drama series programming. Starz gets distribution rights for the U.S. and English-speaking Canada, while BBC Worldwide will distribute the series internationally. The deal essentially gives Starz a (non-exclusive) production arm without the large cost associated with overhead as Starz is looking to compete against its more established pay-cable competitors on a far smaller production budget. The network already uses a similar approach in casting, where it has been using the services of independent casting director Marc Hirschfeld who has been essentially serving as head of casting on a non-exclusive, consulting basis. The deal with BBC Worldwide will allow Starz to put on the air bigger-budget series as BBC Worldwide will deficit finance the shows, covering the difference between the license fee paid by the network and the series’ budget. The company plans to cover the deficit by international sales, so all series developed and produced under the agreement with Starz will be designed with the global marketplace in mind. The first project in the works is Da Vinci’s Demons, recently announced by BBC Worldwide Prods’ head Jane Tranter and written by David S. Goyer. The pact instantly makes BBC Worldwide Prods, known primarily for producing the ABC reality hit Dancing With the Stars, a major supplier of scripted series in the U.S. “When I came to Starz, we determined that forging strong international partnerships would play center stage in financing our ramp-up of dynamic original programming,” said Starz CEO Chris Albrecht. “This exciting partnership with BBC Worldwide Prods is a major step in that direction.”

Sounds interesting, BBC productions are usually good quality entertainment but the output will have to be far, far better than their first outing. This Torchwood thing is absolute garbage, terrible acting, awful writing and a plot that is beyond ludicrous. It’s making Flash Forward look coherent.
Dude, Perhaps you do not like Torchwood Miracle Day because you are not familiar with this series.
The first two years were episodic yet actions had consequences and regular cast characters died.
Like Fringe character development and plots carried over from episode to episode but still each one during the first two seasons were more or less about “The Alien of the Week”.
Then came season three: Torchwood Children of Earth. And everything changed. Everything was amped up. Everything had a cause and effect. Truly great Sci-Fi television. Torchwood while yes being a spin-off of Dr. Who (Torchwood is a anagram of Dr. Who) This is far better IMHO.
But if you just checked into Miracle Day I can see how it might seem OFF-Putting to you.
Check out the pass three seasons and you might change your mind.
Or You already know about the other seasons and checked them out and still don’t like Torchwood and thats fine too… that’s why there are sooooo many other channels.
No dude, he’s right. It sucks. I loved the first two full series of the show and CoE (and all the Doctor Who episodes since 2005, also) but this just sucks.
You know how you get Russell Davies to make a bad show? You give him a lot of cash. This guy is obviously better on a shoestring.
And I’m not one of those Ianto complainers, either.
Phifer and Havins suck, Pullman’s speech to end Friday’s episode went nowhere and meant nothing, Barrowman and Myles seem like cartoon versions of their characters … the only person I love is Jilly Kitzinger and it’s because Ambrose takes a big bite out of every syllable she delivers.
Amazingly disappointed. I hope it gets canceled.
Hopefully this means good news for Torchwood
I’m loving the switch to Starz for Torchwood but where does this news leave BBC America?
You’ve asked the most important question… what happenes to BBC America? Talk about a completely mishandled opportunity, BBC UK, BBC America and BBC Worldwide are in place to show the world what true vertical integration should look like. Instead BBC Worldwide makes pilots for BBC assets at different networks and no one can figure out how navigate soft dollar financing to make something great of the US channel. Instead, Chris Albrecht, gets a financing partner who gets to say nothing about anything as it relates to the directions for these shows at Starz and BBC Worldwide shows “sales” on its books because they, like most companies who don’t really know what to do with their assets, are tethered to “setting up shows” as a way of showing activity.
I guess even BBC Worldwide has finally realized that BBC America has limited appeal and limited financial opportunities because of the pitiful programming changes over the past few years. All this says to me is that BBC Worldwide thinks BBC America has zero chance of moving up in the cable ratings and generating increased revenue.
Too late, dumped all the pay movie/entertainment channels. Doubt very much that this one thing would lure me back. Found that HBO,Starz, etc. were a waste of money, same thing over and over again, and barely 2 or 3 watchable new movies a month. Give me a break.
One hopes that whatever they produce will be better than “MiracleDay.” Terrible, high-school level writing, lazy directing, and a waste of the actor’s (and audience’s) time.
Sir Lordy, please check my response to Ms. Elizabeth above. Thank You. Smiles.
It would be a nice opportunity to bring Doctor Who onboard to take advantage of a larger production budget. The new Torchwood looks much better as a result of Starz involvement.
Oh, and a new Doctor Who would also be in HD! Why BBC America has not made the switch to HD in the States is hard to fathom.
BRING BACK LEGEND OF THE SEEKER!
!
What would be phenomenal is if they brought back Legend of the Seeker!!!!
I agree, PLEASE Bring the seeker back!! <3 Legend of the seeker
We want Legend of the Seeker Season 3
Legend of the Seeker 3 and more pls!!
We need a 3rd season of Legend of the Seeker. This great story, actors and epic love have to be continued. Please give us this chance to see it. Thank you.
Bring back Legend of the Seeker. It already has an established and active fan base, about 4 million. Appealing to a much wider audience than the typical fantasy show. It would be profitable for everyone.
BRING BACK LEGEND OF THE SEEKER! we need a season 3, come on!
The world really needs a third season of legend of the seeker. The show speaks for its self. go watch it and i bet you will do everything in your power to make it happen.
If there are two shows that I think are very deserving, I would say bring back LEGEND OF THE SEEKER and PUSHING DAISIES. Both shows still have so much story left to tell and I firmly believe that they deserve to be aired again.
Bring back legend of the seeker!!!!!!!!!!!
