The wait is over - BlackBerry 10.2.1 has officially been released to the masses. Hit up your BlackBerry 10 smartphones and search for the update and fingers crossed you should see it. Here in the UK my BlackBerry Q10 (on the EE network) and Z30 (without a SIM in it) have both offered up the good stuff so if you're not seeing it now it shouldn't be much longer. Both devices are have successfully updated to 10.2.1.537.

The update is going to bring us a whole range of new features and enhancements to the BlackBerry 10 experience, so here at CrackBerry expect to see a ton of 10.2.1 related content over the next few weeks. We'll even be revisiting all the current BlackBerry 10 devices to see how things have now changed since their launch now we have an improved OS.

We recently took a brief look on video at some of the new goodies in a leaked version of 10.2.1. It will be interesting to see if anything has changed or if we get some new extra treats.

Press Release

Waterloo, Ontario – BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ: BBRY; TSX: BB), a global leader in mobile communications, today announced BlackBerry® 10 OS version 10.2.1, a new software update for BlackBerry 10 smartphones that lets you do more, more easily, and helps you be more productive and stay better connected.

BlackBerry OS 10.2.1 includes hundreds of new enhancements and refinements that will make the things you do every day faster and easier:

 • Customize Pinch Gesture to Filter BlackBerry® Hub - BlackBerry Hub lets you access all your messages and notifications in one place. A new feature lets you instantly filter the message list in the Hub. You can customize the Hub to show only Unread Messages, Flagged Messages, Draft Messages, Meeting Invites, Sent Messages or Level 1 Alerts. Once the filter criterion is set, you can simply activate it with a pinch gesture on the Hub’s message list.
 • Simplified Phone Experience - The phone includes a new incoming call screen that lets you swipe to the left to answer or swipe right to ignore a call. New intuitive icons allow you to instantly silence the call, or send a Reply Now response through BBM™, SMS or email that you can’t answer the phone right away. You can choose from a list of standard automated responses or respond with a personalized note.
 • SMS and Email Groups - You can now create SMS and email groups for more efficient broadcast communications.
 • Actionable Lock Screen Notifications - You can now “Tap to open” a message that appears on the lock screen, letting you respond to an important message much quicker or to check messages more discreetly.
 • Picture Password for Quick Unlocking - You can quickly unlock your phone using a combination of a picture and a number (0-9) of your choice, which you place at a particular point on the image. When you try to unlock the phone, the picture will appear along with a grid of random numbers. To unlock, simply drag the grid so the number you selected overlays the particular point on the image.
 • Customizable Quick Settings Menu - You can now customize what appears on the Settings menu, which includes features such as being able to quickly change the Brightness of the smartphone’s display, toggle various network connections, and access the built-in flashlight. The Settings menu also includes a toggle that lets you instantly switch between your Personal and Work perimeter.
 • Offline Browser Reading Mode - You can now save the current web page you’re on for later viewing, even if you are offline or without an Internet connection.
 • Preferred Contact Sync - You can now choose the sync source for your Contacts ensuring you always have the most up-to-date contact details. When adding a new contact you can designate which sources you want the contact info to sync with, such as the corporate address book, Gmail, Hotmail, etc.
 • Device and Battery Monitor - A new and improved device monitor provides you with essential details on battery usage, the impact of installed apps on battery life and memory usage and storage, as well as CPU stats.
 • Automatic Software Updates - OS updates can be set to happen automatically over a Wi-Fi® connection to help ensure you’re always benefiting from the latest and best possible customer experience.
 • Enterprise Features - When combined with BES10 version 10.2, enterprise customers will gain additional security features and IT policies for when more granular controls are required, such as for regulated industries and for organizations that work with sensitive data. For more information about BES10, please visit www.bes10.com.
 • FM Radio - If you have a BlackBerry® Z30, BlackBerry® Q10 or BlackBerry® Q5 smartphone, the new software update unlocks the built-in FM radio in those handsets. You can listen to local FM stations, which does not require any network connection.

Subject to carrier approvals, BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.2.1 will be available to customers around the world, rolling out starting today in the U.S., Europe, Canada, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and Latin America, and will be available for the entire line of smartphones running BlackBerry 10 (including the Porsche Design P’9982).

Anyone know what I'm supposed to do? I'm using an unlocked Q10 from T-Mobile, in Israel from a carrier which will not push out 10.2.1. How do I get the update?

Can you get a cheap prepaid SIM for a few cents, or borrow a friend's one? A SIM from a carrier that already pushes the update?

Just check the forums, to find out which Israeli carrier does. Have fun!

No word why this is the older leak version, which is older and has a lower radio than the gold SDK?
That's really odd they wouldn't release a version at the same rev or higher than the SDK.

It's the hardware...the chip set can't be changed to add FM with a software update

Prem WatsApp

No discrimination. Early adopters get bitten. The iPhone wasn't feature-complete at release. Only later models added certain features, like 3G.

Z10 was nearly half a year before the Q10. Adding more features would have certainly delayed the release even more. I am not justifying anything or anyone here.
FM Radio - If you have a BlackBerry® Z30, BlackBerry® Q10 or BlackBerry® Q5 smartphone, the new software update unlocks the built-in FM radio in those handsets. You can listen to local FM stations, which does not require any network connection.
Remember there is probably half a year between the two devices. That's "half an iPhone" cycle. Long time in the mobile sphere.

Posted via CB10

That's not the point. There something wrong when a so called budget phone, the q5 has greater functionality than the once flagship model. I agree it's not a huge problem, but it Def is frustrating for us who shelled out 5 bills. Whatever happened to wi-fi direct? The thing about BlackBerry is they can't even fulfill their commitments. Because a leaked version contain all the log/bug collectors running in the background which makes the experience slower. Plus if for any reason you need support, the leaked version is not supported by BlackBerry.

Verizon was the first to release (starting last Friday). Check to see if your phone has auto updated (new feature). If not and your phone is not showing an OS update available, connect to BlackBerry Link - the update is there.

ygevalt

VZW customer here with no updates released since purchasing the Q10 in October. What is and where can I access "Blackberry Link" on my phone?

Genghis2k3

when you connect the BlackBerry to your computer using a USB cable, you should get a message on the phone and the computer telling you that the device wants to download BlackBerry Link to your computer. if it's your personal computer/laptop, you should hit OK on the phone to start the download. Your work computer may not allow this. BlackBerry Link is used to manage the files on your BlackBerry device from your computer.

after downloading BlackBerry Link, you should see an option to check for OS updates, in the left column. BlackBerry Link will search, download, and install the latest update once you prompt it to do so.

if you had no leak installed the OS is approx 640mb. should take about 90 from start to finish depending on your Internet speed.

Maxz888

Malaysia update takes 361mb! For the 537. That's a lot compare to other country. By the way, great work blackberry! Keep moving!

Sweet. Not going to get anything done today...

Well anything not relating to my awesome phone.

EDIT: Great. Link says I have the most recent OS and the phone either says the server is temporary unavailable or says it is the latest. Damn you Verizon.

Genghis2k3

Keep trying. I got the same yesterday. If you don't have a leak it should pop up on BlackBerry Link.

Much nicer way to say it, than a few of the complaints above.

Whether we would use the radio or not, us Z10 owners just got the shafts as thanks for keeping the dream alive long enough for them to release a few more phones.
Suggestion : give us a 75% trade in credit to upgrade to the Z30. I would gladly pay that difference to upgrade.
THAT says "thanks first round BB10 buyers!"
After all whats a few hundred thousand used phones on your write down blackberry, compared to the sale of a bunch more z30's. The marketing power of all those extra phones out there in the wild is worth it;)

What about for the z10 on Verizon network ?

carlosdaroo

Love the update, appears the picture password needs to be reset for those that were running the leak. Also noticed the numbers are not as spaced out as they were on the latest leak, no biggie. OK I'm ready for the 10.3 leak....bring it on! I'm gonna go around showing folks how to get the android stores on their device so they can finally have their Candy crush and instagram... even though I've shown them igrann

What's all the crying over FM radio about?! There are a lot of radio apps you can use, I'm sure you'll find a station you want to listen to.
You shouldn't be using a BlackBerry with data anyway. Wouldn't be smart.

Bit OT, but I hope we get an update that makes it easier to close full screen YouTube videos. I can never hit the right spot, as the expand/collapse button is too small.

To stay OT, still nothing for Vodafone UK :(

Genghis2k3

You could always swipe down the middle of the screen to reduce screen size and then close the screen.

To use the radio you go into music and there is a new tab at the bottom of the first page called radio. You get a message right away saying you need to use your headphones to use the radio as the earbuds act as the antenna. Will go test it out now.

Loaded the leaked os 10.2.1.537 a while ago. What's this official os release any different? Is it worth the hassle of updating?

Posted via CB10

Prem WatsApp

If you're on the leak, it should only be a few megs. Will enable some features with some carriers, and run faster, as some have reported.

Yes lots of improvements, Sonic Dash works fine for me now never worked before. Easier access to contact profiles from all accounts like in 10.2 and the radio of course.

For all those whining that their Z10 doesn't have an FM radio or Miracast and that it's somehow BlackBerry's fault. The hardware doesn't support it. You knew it didn't have an fm radio when you bought it. It doesn't have a quad core processor either. It was known for months that Arista (the z30) was going to be the powerhouse BlackBerry but you either made a decision to not wait or didn't look at the features when you bought it. Chen can't fix YOUR problem. Giving cheaper or free updates to Z30 would amount to another write down. I'd rather he focus on turning the company around. I have a z10 without a radio or Miracast BTW. (And now that I believe BlackBerry has by far the best OS and has a clue about how to survive, I'm going to reverse my decision that said this was my last BlackBerry and get a Z30 when my contract comes up for renewal in 15 days.). I'm loving 10.2.1 which I've been running since it first leaked and now got an automatic updates from Bell Canada this am before I woke up! I'll put this phone up against anything other than a z30. Well done BlackBerry!

THANK YOU!!! People complaining about the FM Radio and Miracast....they knew it didnt have it in the first place....

Genghis2k3

is it confirmed that miracast is not available for the z10? I thought that was the case but I see several references to it in the help manual.

Just waked up and found my Z10 with a notice saying update completed. I was on the 10.2.1925 leak and don't know what happened. I guess it was updated automatically.

My Q10 and Z30 are with other carriers here in Panama so I guess I'll have to wait in order to see the update on these devices. As I didn't flash 10.2.1925 on theQ10 and Z30
