The story of the mining accident that left miners trapped in a mine for 70 days in Chile in 2010 is being told in the production of The 33.

Filming has begun in Copiapo, the original place where the accident occurred. A large portion of the film already had been filmed in the salt mines of Nemocon, Colombia. The rescue scenes are now being filmed in Tierra Amarilla.

The film is being produced by Mike Medavoy, starring Antonio Banderas, Juliette Binoche, and Rodrigo Santono. Antonio Banderas plays the role of Mario Sepulveda, the charismatic leader of the miners and known in Chile as “Super Mario”.

The 33 is said to be scheduled to be released by the end of 2014 or next year in time for the Cannes Film Festival.
