Filming continues in Northern Ireland. Locations used so far include Tollymore Forest, Quoile River and Shane’s Castle. According to IFTN, Linen Mills Studio has seen increased usage this season as well. This studio was first used last season and it seems that it was a success as the studio has expanded this year, with Game of Thrones set to occupy that expansion starting next month.
Spotted down at Linen Mills is the boat that was used last season for Theon’s arrival in Pyke and the Battle of the Blackwater, only this time a dragon head has been added to the prow of the ship, according to Twitterer @Jiggy_LFC. He provides photographic evidence, although the dragon head is partially covered by a tarp in this shot.
Lastly, Wyvernwood provides some new photos from the Quoile River set. The dock has now been painted Tully red and the boat has gained a passenger. Filming should begin there in the coming days, if it hasn’t started already.
Winter Is Coming: Glad to see that this show is such a huge success that it has prompted the expansion of not one, but two, Northern Ireland studios (the Paint Hall finished up an expansion earlier this year). Hopefully these studios will remain in use for many years to come!

Yeah I figured the dragon boat will be for Daenarys also (is that really a spoiler? At the end of last season Dany goes “IS THIS ENOUGH TO BUY ME A SHIP” and Jorah goes, “A small one” so this was basically confirmed even for people who don’t read the books).

That was my immediate thought too but it’s too early to introduce. Benioff & Weiss
will have us guessing on that one. In the past (?) filming went on to include upcoming
scenes that may be later in the season or to include in the following. Either for cost
saving measures or short sighted vision this is not generally done anymore. Many
years ago with high hopes some series were filmed well in advance only to have the
show cancelled for poor viewership or ratings. I hope that GoT season 4 and 5 get the
nod from HBO in due time. It’s embarrassing that worst ones have been approved. RIP
“Luck” and Nick Nolte’s comeback dreams.

With the story being where it is, it’s the only explanation that makes sense to me. It’s too early for the kingsmoot and I can’t for the life of me see Dany commanding the Dothraki to carve a head like that nor see a Dothraki screamer being able to do that.

Uh, nobody is thinking that? In the chronology of the books, however, Euron arrives in Pyke at some point during the events of A Storm of Swords, so it’s possible that his character will be introduced. Perhaps not likely, but possible.
Again, when I initially posted it, I noted that it was incredibly unlikely. Speculation isn’t just about making 100% accurate predictions, though, it’s also about having some fun by tossing ideas around. It might make sense for them to want to introduce some of the other Greyjoy family members earlier so that we have a better sense of who they are and why they’re all fighting by the time the Kingsmoot actually happens.

Better safe than sorry, I figure. Non-readers have a terribly difficult time avoiding spoilers, so I try to make things as easy for them as possible.

We don’t really know what the situation will be like in Qarth at all. It’s not as if the city is devoid of people now that none of the Thirteen remain – Dany’s comments indicate that they’d be buying a boat, not just taking one – so it stands to reason that there would be several Qartheen craftsman around who might do that kind of work for her.

The red herring is the ” dragon head”, maybe we’re missing something to base our
suspicions on or maybe not. Dragons were ruled by the Targaryeons but not unique
to the world. I hope there’s no stretching out the ” horn” and other theories, I got
pretty exhausted waiting for something to develop until the priest traveling with
Vic appeared. Anyway, nothing quite makes sense right now so all guesses are a
possible maybe. The pictures that WiC noted here are really exciting to see though…

I see your point yet GoT Qarth scenes were beautiful and vague. Not much was observed
beyond that soiree that entertained Khaleesi and appears to be ended as Danerys and
her entourage firmly shut the door behind them as they left. Qarth is gone but other
nearby cities remain so we’ll see. As I reminded Aegon the Conquerer, dragons were
perhaps ruled by the Targaryeons but not unique to the rest of the world . Far fetched
would be Targaryeon supporters in Westeros but that notion is probably way off so….

Just noticed the new countdown clock… Boy, is that depressing. 200+ days… Jesus Christ.
I remember driving home cross-country back to LA several years ago, and at about the halfway point (I think it was somewhere outside of Amarillo, TX), there’s a random sign in the middle of nowhere that says “Los Angeles: 1050 mi” (or something like that), and I actually found it to be much more disheartening than reassuring (I’m a glass-is-half-empty kind of guy, I guess).
But, holy shit, 243 days is a long frickin’ time. What are we going to do until then? GRRM should at least give us another Dunk & Egg between now and then to ease the pain a bit. It might only serve as methadone to ASOIAF’s pure, uncut, white China heroin, but at least it would be something.

It’s about a Global News show based in the USA. The premise is that News has become
silly and unbalanced with it’s mandate not to inform the public but seek entertainment
and ratings for popularity. The lead actors are Emily Mortimer, Jeff Daniels , Dev Patel
and a great supporting cast. You must watch this, at least the first episode !!!! It is not
boring. This is intelligent with much wit and real ass life stuff including how the US
is perceived by the rest of the world. My personal favorite is exposing ” religious”
or ” political ” zealots and the real life footage to indicate their one sided POV or
” doctrines”. I just could not watch TrueBlood anymore so this show is my sunday
go to. Do you get “the Jon Stewart show”? My neighbour ( Zola) grew up in Cape
Town and said to say hullo.

I can’t watch True Blood anymore either, but I have found a new program on direcTV Aud channel called Hit&Miss with Chloe Sevigney. She was one of the wives on Big Love. It’s about a transgender hit-man (person) who has to take responsibility of her 11 year old son and his siblings when her former girlfriend dies of cancer. (she is the 11 year old’s bio dad) It’s really well done. Mo Ryan has a review of it online.

Personally, I think “The Newsroom” is generally not that good (inconsistent writing, too preachy, poor treatment of MacKenzie and Maggie as characters – Maggie in particular is basically written to be hopelessly unprofessional and incompetent, unnecessary and poorly written romance subplots, etc.). It has some good ideas and occasionally does some good work (and I’ll always enjoy seeing a drunk Sam Waterson), but I don’t find it particularly compelling or well-written like I did The West Wing.
I don’t know, I guess it’s hard to see a lot of the validity in the underlying point the show is making when the mainstream news have been increasingly marginalized in real life and things like blogs, twitter and the internet in general have already been doing their part to counter many of these negative aspects.

I see your point. I hate the emotional stuff as many shows write in to please the loud
minority of viewers, but it’s a small tradeoff in exchange for great ideas expressed. I
do not agree with it being preachy however, it’s refreshing to listen to the exchanges
between the cast and fictional political and religious characters. Much of those
exchanges are fact based and expose the hypocrites on both sides of the spectrum.
As for the personalities of the fake news staffers, my neighbour grants that her local
news station operates in a similar dysfunctional way. It appears to be balanced and
that’s not always pretty or what’s taught in college. Sorkin was interviewed by Stephen
Colbert ( fake political pundit ) and did not impress me at all, it’s a good thing that in
creating a series the product depends on a group of talented people. Sam Watterson
was the reason why Newsroom was on my radar at all, then I learned of Jane Fonda
and Jeff Daniels on the ticket. I only knew of Emily Mortimer from her wonderful
voice lent to ” Howl’s Moving Castle”, a Miyazaki film. I missed out on viewing the
” West Wing”, I heard it was a superb show with actor Martin Sheen.
And yes online blogs and online news have picked up the slack where some print
and TV media have left off but there remains a significant % of the populace that
does not subscribe to such. Many cannot afford computers.

As a Sorkin fan I too am disappointed with the Newsroom. It highlights Sorkin’s faults as a writer for me. Mainly his portrayal of women. He can’t see them as rational people, ergo he goes to out of his way to make them flawed and they end up emotional messes. Emily Mortimer is one of the most talented woman in the industry, see any of her work for Neil Labute, her portrayal of Cat Ridgley in Elizabeth, her comedic prowess in 3o Rock and My Idiot Brother. And here a potentially strong female character that she deserves to play is reduced to a hot mess. And not to undermine my argument or my defense of Mortimer she has a very sensual presence that creeps up on you. I would love to see her on Game of Thrones. In Sorkin’s defense he may be following an agenda already predetermined by the industry. Look no further than Game of Thrones with how they are handling Catelyn Stark’s character. As great as Michelle Fairley is, she is a far cry fron Martin’s vision.
As for the Newsroom, if you want a real look into journalism look no further than the masterful Network by Sidney Lumet and the unappreciated Good Night and Good Luck by George Clooney which also features Jeff Daniels.

Agreed on everything, including your suggestions. Although Sorkin’s portrayal of women in the Newsroom doesn’t bother me as much, it pains me to say Emily Mortimer’s acting is all over the place IMO, and I love her as an actress. Sadly, the romantic sub-plots are badly handled and come off as cheesy an unnecessary most of the time. However, there are some good moments and some excellent bits of dialogue, especially in the earlier episodes, and I love the ethical issues the show touches upon, especially since they feel so terribly familiar.

And check out The Adjustment Bureau. It has its weaknesses in the story department but it works nonetheless largely because of the chemistry between the leads. Mortimer is definitely one of the sexiest and most capable actresses working, in my view.

I’ll go one step further, I think Newsroom is a horrendous mess. Awful. Terrible. We were really excited to watch Newsroom and thought the initial show as OK, but it has devolved into an embarrassment. In the ultimate act of dissing the show, we cancelled its season pass on TIVO. If HBO doesn’t cancel this show, they might as well re-start Luck as a series.
As far as the dragon-headed boat is concerned… for conversation’s sake, maybe the Lyseni ship that finds Davos after the battle of Blackwater? Eh?
Or they will do some more fancy CGI and make this one ship into three for Dany’s voyage to Pentos, thanks to Illyrio?

You brought up an interesting point re: Davos and where we’ll find him at the beginning of S3. Just last night I was reading his first chapter from ASoS and was wondering if they’ll show the moment he’s saved from the island or simply fast-forward a bit. The reason I’m not so sure is because we’ve already seen Stannis back on Dragonstone, and from what I remember, Davos only spent a few days on that island before being rescued, so these two moments are happening at roughtly the same time, I’d say. I don’t remember what happens to Davos right after his rescue (I have yet to re-read that part) but I think there’s a strong possibility we won’t see him on the island at all.

It does make one wonder, given what you wrote, how D&D will handle Davos then. If memory serves they said, or inferred/implied, that they wouldn’t do any flashbacks in the series. So, I would assume that they either show the rescue, or somehow just gloss over the fact that Davos kind of disappeared during the Battle of Blackwater. Well, I guess there would be other ways to handle it. But, still, it’s a headscratcher.

I’m not sure the timing is so important here though. I mean, if it plays out a certain way in the book, that’s not to say it has to go that way in the show. I thought the rescue was dramatic enough that it would be worthy of showing. They can fiddle with the timeline to make it fit. In the books, storylines are not all happening concurrently. It isn’t like a cut from Dany to Arya implies that the Arya scene takes place at the same time as or soon after the Dany scene. So I’d hope they work that rescue in there.

Completely agree. The treatment of the female characters is atrocious. The female leads are supposedly intelligent and capable, supposedly, but can’t work an email, open an door without knocking into to some guy’s face, and avoid bringing personal romantic antics into the Newsroom. The show is overtly sexist to me. If anyone wants to watch a good show over the summer watch Breaking Bad.

I actually caught that Craigyferg interview at its original airing, and ended up saving that particular episode on my Tivo primarily because of that interview, which only cemented the crush I had on her. I’m a big fan of The Late Late Show :)
Of the movies you listed I’d only seen Sunshine Cleaning, which was solid. Will definitely check out the rest you (and others!) have suggested. Thanks!

i totally agree about breaking bad, i effin love that show. the only addition i would make to your suggestion is that if you have not seen breaking bad it is imperative that you start from e1/S1. you need to see what walter white (cranston’s character) was like at the start of the show and his gradual change. it’s magnifique.
walt’s story arc, his declination into badass-ery, is on par with michael corleone. not to be heretical to Godfather devotees.

Your post has given me something to think about. I’ve been trying to ignore the silly
romantic entanglements and focus on the winning perspective of the series namely
the POV and relevant dramas. Perhaps there is a bit of denial on my part and didn’t
want to know more or excuse myself for a kitchen break. At the end of the day I’m
glad I focused on the winning aspects of the show. It’s a shame that All social media
subscribes to including nonsense to try and please everyone ( actually episode 2 or 3
covered that subject ironically) I automatically filter out the bullshit.

Rarely but I do have an aversion to Tom Cruise and Pauly Shore. To defend Cruise
the one and only film I enjoyed him in and would watch again is ” Knight and Day”.
As for Stewart, he’s well read and often makes intelligent assertions on his show. I
was lucky enough to watch an interview with post US Presidential hopeful John
McCain, Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney and Mrs Cheney, Robert Fisk, Gore Vidal
and a host of others incl US president Barack Obama and they either clarified truths
or made themselves look stupid with their replies. It’s been good hear them eat their
words or give us a positive glimpse of their true character. My favorite is often visitor
Fareed Zakaria. The show has gotten a bit silly as of late with celebrity guests and
serious interviews don’t last as long and are apparently continued online. I’m not
easily addicted to any show and have missed many episodes but I do listen out for
controversial guest or interesting artists. Stephen Colbert began on the Daily Show,
I find myself enjoying the show even more because of the farce he makes of political
stupidity posing as a conservative. His assertions are blunt and well thought out and
he just makes me laugh out loud. We both grew up ( not my native land ) in the
subtropical Southeast Coast ( South Carolinas Coastal Georgia) and my impression
of him is that he’s intelligent and quite evolved from his historical roots. I give
him much credit where due, he really stands out when he returns there. Have you
heard about his ” Super Pac” ?

But I really enjoyed his mockumentry on his book “I am a pole and so can you” and its induction into the Rosenbach Museum next to the manuscript of Ullyses.
I guess I really like him cause in a weird way he reminds me a lot of Tyrion.
Just for clarification’s sake, after your reference of Colbert were you speaking of him or Steward?

I know what you mean. When Jon announces at the start of the program some celebrity guest promoting a movie I prepare for inanity and boredom, but when he has guests like Zakaria or Neal deGrasse Tyson or some author talking politics or something like that, I know it will probably be a fascinating watch. He should just book the political/intellectual sort generally IMO. I’m assuming you watched his interview with Zakaria last week?
Colbert is really funny but I enjoy TDS more because of the great comedians Jon’s got on his crew, who often do great remote pieces. I feel Colbert’s show seems smaller since it tends to focus only on him talking in his studio. Though when Colbert interviewed Maurice Sendak it was hilarious.
I’ve been to taping for both shows too :)

Oh sorry, I scrolled up and re-read your posts. Both Emily’s are awesome. I’m still
familiarizing myself with Mortimer’s works though, I somehow never paid close
attention to her in the rare film I saw. I’ve noted a few suggestions from posts
here so I’m making an effort to review them. I don’t get the “movies” all that
often anymore and great films come in cycles in SanFrancisco. We have here
Film Societies that make a special showing during Festivals. These days a lot
of crap cycles through the regular theaters on a frequent basis, sort of like the
flavor of the month stuff. I suppose I’m protesting by not handing out my $.
Such a shame that Gerard Depardiu , once idolized by me has become a buffoon
and appearing in anything no matter how stupid. Graham Norton had him on
several months back and I was quite embarrassed for him.

If you want to see a good bit of Mortimer if you know what I mean *wink wink nudge nudge* watch Young Adam. A good mainstream role with her would be the 98 film Elizabeth starring Cate Blanchett. Mortimer and Kelly Macdonald play two of the Queen’s ladies in waiting. Also Alfie Allen plays a nobleman’s young son and Geoffrey Rush is just awesome in the film. Blanchett too. She should have won the Oscar not Gwyneth Paltrow.

I have watched Breaking Bad since season one and the progression of Walter White is handled brilliantly. I love it too. Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy help me with the wait for the next season of Game of Thrones.
