In a Broadway season without obvious awards frontrunners, musical “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” led the pack of Tony Awards nominees with 10 nods, including one for new tuner and two competing noms for lead musical actor.

“Hedwig and the Angry Inch” notched eight nominations including musical revival and a lead thesping nod for star Neil Patrick Harris. Musicals “After Midnight” and “Beautiful” — each also competing for the new tuner prize — took seven apiece, as did play revivals “The Glass Menagerie” and “Twelfth Night.”

Tony Nominations: How the New Play Race Surprised With Five

“Gentleman’s Guide” was this season’s closest thing to a sure-bet nomination for new musical, the only category that reliably influences sales at the box office. The tuner, a music-hall-style comedy about a familial killing spree, earned some of the best reviews of the season, but the critical raves have translated into only middling sales. The title therefore stands to have a lot to gain from potential awards attention, as does “After Midnight,” the Cotton Club revue that has proven relatively soft at the box office despite scoring high marks with critics.

Box office is less of a concern for the other two musicals in the new tuner category, Carole King bio “Beauitful” and Disney Theatrical Prods.’ “Aladdin” (five noms). “Beautiful,” with a nominations haul that includes one for lead actress Jessie Mueller, showed its sales muscle early and in more recent weeks seems to have picked up even more momentum. “Aladdin,” meanwhile, started hitting big numbers almost immediately out of the gate.

Following the introduction of new regulations that make possible the expansion or contraction of major production categories based on the number of eligible contenders, this year’s nominations list saw new variations in the number of contenders in key categories. The musical revival race shrank to three — “Hedwig,” “Violet” (four noms) and “Les Miserables” (three), leaving off “Cabaret,” the only other tuner revival of the season (and one that already won the Tony in its original 1998 staging).

The new play category proved the only one in which the nominators’ voting spread yielded an expanded category of five titles, encompassing Bryan Cranston topliner “All the Way” (two noms), Tony Shalhoub starrer “Act One” (five), Harvey Fierstein play “Casa Valentina” (four), Tyne Daly vehicle “Mothers and Sons” and John Patrick Shanley outing “Outside Mullingar” (one).

Nominators narrowed the season’s crowd of play revivals down to four contenders for the trophy: Daniel Radcliffe topliner “The Cripple of Inishmaan” (six), “The Glass Menagerie” (seven), Denzel Washington starrer “A Raisin in the Sun” (five) and “Twelfth Night” (seven).

Radcliffe and Washington were two of the high-profile thesps notably left off the nominations list, as was “Cabaret” star Michelle Williams. Such omissions were seemingly inevitable this season, when the pack of Hollywood names on the Broadway boards was unusually dense. Ian McKellen (“No Man’s Land/Waiting for Godot”), Zachary Quinto (“Glass Menagerie”) and the entire cast of “The Realistic Joneses” — Michael C. Hall, Toni Collette, Marisa Tomei and last season’s lead actor Tony winner, Tracy Letts — were among those left emptyhanded after the nominations.

Well-known names including Harris, Cranston (for lead actor in a play) and Chris O’Dowd (for his lead role in “Of Mice and Men”), however, made the cut.

Nominations were announced by Jonathan Groff and Lucy Liu at midtown’s Diamond Horseshoe, the venue where immersive dance-theater-dining event “Queen of the Night” takes place. Hugh Jackman made a surprise appearance to tubthump for the Tony ceremony he’ll host June 8 at Radio City Music Hall.
