Vaduz claim record-equalling Liechtensteiner Cup

Swiss Challenge League leaders FC Vaduz secured a world-record equalling 42nd Liechtensteiner Cup with a 6-0 defeat of USV Eschen/Mauren to ensure another UEFA Europa League bid.

FC Vaduz secured a world-record equalling 42nd national cup success, with a 6-0 Liechtensteiner Cup final defeat of USV Eschen/Mauren ensuring another UEFA Europa League qualifying campaign.

Only once since 1998 have Vaduz not secured the trophy in the sole UEFA member nation without a national league, a 2012 loss to Eschen/Mauren on penalties. However, there was no danger of a repeat and Vaduz have now lifted the trophy as many times as Linfield FC have won the cup in Northern Ireland.

Pascal Schürpf scored the first goal for Giorgio Contini's team after 35 minutes, when his shot from the egde of the box went in via the crossbar. Two minutes before the break Nicolas Hasler doubled the lead, set up by Manuel Sutter.

After an hour Nico Abegglen hit the third, and eight minutes later he was again on the scoresheet. Ten minutes before the final whistle Ramon Cecchini scored Vaduz's fifth goal with a low shot from 20 metres and Kwang-Ryong Pak had the last word soon after.

Vaduz can now turn their attention to earning promotion back to the Swiss Super League. They sit top of the Challenge League with a 12-point cushion over second-placed FC Schaffhausen. They were last in the top division in 2008/09.
