Zipporah Erez was one of the lucky ones. In 1939, just a few months before Hitler and Stalin invaded Poland, the 17-year-old biology student received a letter of admission to Hebrew University in Jerusalem. At a time when the entry of Jews into British mandatory Palestine was strictly limited, the letter entitled her to an immigration certificate.
Within months, the gates of escape would close forever on Europe's Jews, and within a few years her entire family would be wiped out by the Nazis. Zipporah Erez's letter of admission turned out to be her ticket to survival.
