The latest trip for the Lancashire Curry Club took us into the heartland of Chorley. The Sharju more specifically. First impressions are somewhat influenced by the fact the restaurant is situated in an old church. So, unsure as to whether we would be given a menu or a Bible, we pressed on. On entry the sheer size of the building makes for quite a chilly atmosphere punctuated only by an electric heater positioned by our table.
Having perused the menu for sometime our soon to be friendly host for the evening came and assisted us. The obligatory 2 poppadoms each with dips were ordered and at this point our host suggested a platter of starters followed by 4 curries selected by himself judged against our preferences. So 2 medium, a hot, and a mixed dish were recommended.
Poppadoms. Pretty standard. Although particularly cold dips!!
Starter. Brought on a large plate the platter was a good idea and very well received by the curry club. The usual suspects were present, chicken tikka, kebab, onion bahjis all on a bed of salad. Well presented and enough for those present to be satisfied.
Main. The four dishes were brought out, each described by our host as to content, consistency and potency. We dug in. The spiciest dish did cause some interest as it did leave an after taste not too everyone’s liking. A peculiar lentil dish was also added to our table. After much poking, stirring and discussion we tried it. Not sure was the verdict hence why when clearing up a full dish was returned. Curry is about meat. No meat no curry.
As a whole the evening was enjoyed by all, the chat and banter with the main host was good, especially once our identity was revealed. The one worrying factor was that we were the only people in. Only ones when we entered, throughout the meal and at the end. It felt rather like if we hadn’t gone there they may well have shut early.
However 70% of the curry club was struck down by what can only be described as “water works” later that night and into the following day, suggesting that…all is not right at the Sharju.
