About Our Town

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION

Our town lies at an elevation of 856 m above sea level  in the middle of Glemmtal Valley, through which flows the River Saalach. The valley's main town is our western neighbor, Saalbach-Hinterglemm. To the east, at the entrance to the valley, you will find the village of Maishofen.
Our valley is flanked by the Kitzbühel Alps, better known here as the "Pinzgau Grass Mountains".
The following mountains surround our village:
to our SW, the Oberer Gernkogel (elev. 2,175 m) - highest point in Viehhofen
to our SE, the Schmittenhöhe (1,965 m)
to our NE, the Sausteige (1,912 m) - which is also the origin of the animal displayed on our coat-of-arms, the boar.

POLITICAL LOCATION
Viehhofen is an autonomous community of about 600 residents.
The region's administrative offices are located in Zell am See, the main town in the Pinzgau, the southwestern-most district, and also the largest in total area in Salzburg province.

COUNTRYSIDE
Not without reason are our mountains known as the Grasberge ("Grass Mountains"). They are high enough to afford magnificent views from their summits, and generally plenty of snow in winter, whilst still being low enough that, even in their highest reaches, you barely encounter rocky terrain and are able to reach the valley's mountaintops without having to revert to climbing ropes, crampons or other mountaineering gear.
Which is one reason why our region is so popular with visitors: in summer, you can hike the entire valley, while in winter, our famous neighbors in Saalbach-Hinterglemm await with over 200 km of ski slopes - ranging from beginner to expert - and a ski run all the way back to the center of Viehhofen.

TOURISM

Tourism plays an important role in all of our region's communities, though here in Viehhofen, it has a special significance due to our good fortune.  On the one hand, we lie between the most famous tourism destinations in all of Austria, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Zell am See and Kaprun, which means our guests are able to take full advantage of the tourism infrastructure in each of these towns.  Yet on the other hand, we have been able to preserve the idyllic, peaceful atmosphere of a small alpine village.
In Viehhofen, there is still no such thing as mass tourism, and that is why it is so frequently the case that guests quickly turn into true friends, friends who discover a home-away-from-home here with us.
Yet another important aspect is our prices, which remain below those of our neighbors, a not insignificant detail for our guests, by any means!
