Rewards & Sanctions

Rewards

We believe that our students perform more successfully if they are rewarded for their efforts. Apart from praise and a positive system of assessment of work, students across all the key stages have the opportunity to have their hard work and efforts recognised. Across all the key stages the school has introduced an electronic ‘merit’ system. These merits can be awarded for a number of things; effort, outstanding work, team work, leadership attributes, exceeding targets, being an active citizen, participation in house/school events and attendance. These merits will contribute to the overall house cup standings and will also be monitored and individual success celebrated. The school also has a number of presentation events during the year and letters are sent to parents of students who have been invited to sign the Tring School Commendation Book.

Celebration Assemblies

As a school we believe that students’ successes should be recognised and celebrated. One of the main ways the school does this is through our assemblies. These are usually conducted in Houses. There are also some special Sixth Form assemblies. Students across all the Key Stages have the opportunity to receive rewards for their academic achievements, community efforts and attendance.

Sanctions

Sanctions are applied where considered necessary. These, like the system of rewards, work on a sliding scale depending on the severity or frequency of the offence. A verbal warning should be enough in the first instance but a student may need to be issued a further sanction depending on the seriousness of the incident.

Ideally we will endeavour to give parents a minimum of 24 hours notice for after school detentions. However, in preparation for the government’s abolishment of this requirement, the school will be adopting the policy early and will not give 24 hours notice in certain circumstances. We will always communicate with parents regarding the sanction prior to the detention.

3 Strikes System:

The school has 3 basic expectations of every student for every lesson.

  • Be on time
  • Be dressed correctly
  • Be fully equipped

If a student fails to meet one of these expectations in any lesson this will be recorded on the electronic Behaviour Management System. In addition, if a student is incorrectly dressed anywhere within the school they may be issued with a mark on the Behaviour Management System. If a student receives 3 strikes within a one week period they will be issued with a detention held on a Thursday for one hour after school. For students who receive 3 strikes over a half term they will be issued with a one hour afterschool detention at the end of that half term, also held on a Thursday evening.

Report Cards:

“Report” sheets are used to monitor a pupil’s progress for a given period of time.

Detentions:

There are a number of detention sanctions available to staff to use:

Break time – Set by any staff member for minor discretions – supervised by the staff member issuing the detention

Lunch time – Part of the centralised detention system, these detentions are 30 minutes long, supervised by a member of the Leadership Team, Head of House or Director of Learning. These may be issued for misdemeanours such as non-completion of homework, low level disruption or failure to bring any PE kit.

After School – Again, these are part of the centralised detention system. These detentions are 60 minutes long, held Monday – Thursday evenings immediately after school and supervised by staff from across the subjects on a rota basis. These detentions are used for students who fail to attend lunchtime detentions, repeat offenders, persistent lack of homework or more serious incidences of poor behaviour in lessons.

Leadership Team Detention – These detentions are 120 minutes long, part of the centralised detention system, held on Friday after school and are supervised by a member of the Leadership Team. These are issued to students who fail to attend after school detentions or for more serious breaches of the school’s Behaviour Policy.

Internal Exclusion:

The Internal Exclusion room is the school’s second most powerful sanction behind a fixed term exclusion. The room is a place where students who have demonstrated seriously challenging behaviour will be placed to work in a silent, supervised and orderly environment, away from other children.

Exclusion:

The decision to exclude a student is not taken lightly. However, for more serious incidents Fixed Term or Permanent Exclusion may be used.
