Spotlight on Queen of Buganda – Sylvia Nagginda

Ever wanted to know more about the reigning Nnabagereka, otherwise known as the Queen of Buganda? Well, we are pleased to get  be your guide…Queen Sylvia Nagginda, was born in England in 1964 and raised in Uganda. She completed various degrees in New York before going on to work at the UN Headquarters in New York amongst other roles within her 18 years in the US. In 1998, she returned to Uganda and started dating her long time friend King Mutebi II, King of Buganda.

On Valentines’ day, they announced their engagement and got married that August at St. Paul’s Cathedral on Namirembe Hill. Sylvia became the first queen of Buganda in fifty years. Shunning the traditional role of the Kabaka’s wife, she has actively taken a focus on early childhood care and development, female education and empowerment, vocational training for the youth as well as health issues ranging from childhood diseases, nutrition and HIV/Aids.
