Welcome 2014 Mississippi Writers Guild Conference Speakers
Sandra Beasley is the author of I Was the Jukebox, winner of the Barnard Women Poets Prize, and Theories of Falling, winner of the New Issues Poetry Prize. Recent honors for her work include the Center for Book Arts Chapbook Prize, Cornell College’s Distinguished Writer fellowship, Lenoir-Rhyne University’s Writer in Residence position, and two DCCAH Artist Fellowships. Her most recent book is Don’t Kill the Birthday Girl: Tales from an Allergic Life, a memoir and cultural history of food allergy. She lives in Washington, D.C., and is on the faculty of the low-residency MFA program at the University of Tampa. For more information, visit:

Terry L. Kennedy is the author of the poetry collection New River Breakdown and the limited edition chapbook, Until the Clouds Shatter the Light that Plates Our Lives, selected by Thomas Lux for Jeanne Duvall Editions. His work appears in a variety of literary journals and magazines including Cave Wall, Southern Review, and Waccamaw and has been honored with a Randall Jarrell Fellowship as well as fellowships to the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. He currently serves as the Associate Director of the Graduate Program in Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and is Editor of the online journal storySouth. Melanie Dickerson is the author of award-winning Young Adult fairy tale retellings set in Medieval Europe: The Healer’s Apprentice, The Merchant’s Daughter, The Fairest Beauty, and The Captive Maiden. Her fifth novel, The Princess Spy, releases in November. Published with Harper Collins Christian Publishing, she is a two-time Christy Award finalist, won the Carol Award in the Young Adult category, and won the National Readers Choice Award for Best First Book. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Special Education from The University of Alabama and lives with her husband and two daughters in north Alabama. Jane Nickerson is a former children’s librarian and educator who makes her home in Aberdeen, Mississippi. Her short stories for children have appeared in numerous magazines, including Spider, Cricket, Cicada, Child Life, Family Fun, and Children’s Playmate. For many years she wrote a human interest column for her local paper. Her first novel, STRANDS OF BRONZE AND GOLD, was published by Knopf/Random House in 2013. Her second novel, THE MIRK AND MIDNIGHT HOUR, with the same publisher, will be released in March, 2014. Her website is www.jane-nickerson.com.
