Has MI Abaga Outdone Himself With His Latest ‘Chairman’ Album?

Confession:  I am a card-carrying MI Fan and much of this is going to come across rather slanted but I really don’t care. I pre-ordered 10 copies of the Chairman album when it went on sale last week. Yeah, the thirst is that bad.

Of all the industry nite acts this year, this has to be one of the epic ones. MI’s 4 year hiatus from mainstream rap music was brought to a glorious end last night when he decided to finally release an album that has been in the works for like two years now?

While I’m still digesting the full album, Here’s a first take on the Album, which was performed live by MI last night at the Spice Route in VI. You guys have to pardon my rambling, momentary incoherence while reading. Its been a long night and I haven’t gotten any sleep.  Here goes:

The Chairman Album is not a beef album

The  momentum of the album promotion got us all worried. MI seemed on the war path, so much was read into the lyrics of #KingJames that industry niggas were already putting other rap acts on high alert. The media was like: Watch your backs, Olamide and Phyno. MI is coming to reclaim his spot, that’s even if he admitted to losing it in the first place. This album wasn’t even about that. ‘Chairman’ is about something completely different. Check this out.

Is MI going Gospel rap on us?

Well, maybe. The older we become, the closer we draw to something higher, mostly spiritual. The more we realize we can’t have achieved all we achieved by ourselves. MI has a lot to be thankful for. A lot has happened since that night bus from Jos in early 2000.

MI Quashed That MI Versus Jesse Jagz beef in style

When Jesse’s name didn’t appear on the track list, tongues started wagging. Last night, in the most classiest way ever, MI put all that ‘Bad Belle’ gist to dust. Early Choc City fans will let you know MI will hype his brother to death, even more than he hypes himself (and we all know MI can hype himself). Last night, the brotherly love was palpable. At some point during his rendition of the track ‘Brother’, the crowd all had their eyes trained on Jesse Jags, including the guy handling the spotlight. And did we see a tear fall from Jesse’s face during those moments? Nah must have been the weed in the air.

That reverse track-list idea was boss

M.I-Abaga-TrackList

Okay, MI sucker punched me on that one. I didn’t see it coming. I didn’t even see it at first when the track list came out. Every song on one side of the album art has an opposite song on the other side. Damn. Who thought of that? To be honest, it kinda hurt. Because MI fans are like Mode 9 fans. We chide ourselves on being chronic intellectuals. And yet, not only did we not expect it, we even missed it completely when that shit came out. I was disappointed in myself. It just goes to show how low the industry has sunk. We really don’t expect quality from our music professionals anymore.

Is ‘Chairman’ Better than ‘Talk About It’?

I have niggas asking me this question all night on BBM and Twitter. My take? I don’t think its better. I think its a ‘Wiser’, ‘Older’ album. Simply because its a wiser, older Mi talking now. MI was 26 when he made ‘Talk About It’ and was cool for the young, upcoming MI. His fans have grown older as well and His fans, who are also his greatest critics, would be the first to cut him hard if his music didn’t grow along with him. A direct comparison between the two albums would be like comparing night and day. Night is good. Day is good.

MI finally broke the Globacom jinx

I don’t believe i’m writing this but i have to admit i almost kinda like bought into this modern day urban legend. If you haven’t heard the gist, then well, sorry, i’m not about to break it here. Not with Fuse Radio sponsors reading this. *clears throat*. Anyways, Mi proved that even Urban legends can’t hold him back. And if this is true, it just means Lynxxx’s career is shit all by itself.

Don’t take my word for it. Order the MI album here, get it and listen to it. Then you can go to the comments section and agree with me there. Or not.
