Canadian Freestyle Mogul Skier Jean-Luc Brassard will be inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame (CSHOF) on Wednesday at a gala dinner in Calgary. Brassard’s induction marks the first time a Freestyle Skier has been recognized by the prestigious organization.

Brassard had a remarkable skiing career, capped off by a host of FIS World Cup wins, two FIS World Championship titles (in 1993 and 1997) and Olympic gold in Lillehammer in 1994 at the event’s Olympic medal debut.

But, as Canadian Freestyle Ski Association CEO Peter Judge pointed out, Brassard’s competitive biography is not the only reason he has been singled out as a Canadian sports hero.

Judge said, “We are very proud that Jean-Luc has been selected for induction into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. As a steely-eyed competitor Jean-Luc showed something special from his first World Cup victory at his home mountain at the age of 18 through four Olympic appearances. It is clear that his body of work was both significant and impressive. More importantly though, was the manner in which he conducted himself – unassuming, humble, gregarious and always approachable. Jean-Luc was a shining example of how we want our athletes to be, both in the heat of battle and off the field. We are excited to see Jean-Luc take his place among Canada’s sporting elite.”

In fact, numerous members of today’s National Freestyle Ski Team, including current Olympic Champion Alex Bilodeau, credit Brassard with inspiring them to become Freestyle skiers.

Sheryn Posen, former chief operating officer of CSHOF and director of the 2010 CSHOF Induction Dinner, said that Brassard was selected for induction in recognition of his sporting achievements and his positive influence over other athletes.

Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame currently has 514 athletes and builders. Nominations to the Hall of Fame can be made by individuals or organizations and the selection committee is comprised mainly of sports journalists.

Brassard is being inducted into the CSHOF along with seven other notable sports personalities including: Clara Hughes, Chantal Petitclerc, Patrick Roy, Kyle Shewfelt, Jacques Villeneuve, Bob Ackles and Roger Jackson.
