THE EUROPEAN PRIZE FOR LITERATURE 2014 is awarded to JON FOSSE (NORWAY), born in 1959 in Haugesund, Norway, for the totality of his work as a dramatist, a novelist, a poet and a writer of essays, because of his strong, demanding and innovative writing in any literary genre.

Placed under the patronage of Mr. Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe and sponsored by the City of Strasbourg, the European Prize for Literature was awarded last year to Erri de Luca (Italy).

The award ceremony will take place in Strasbourg’s City Hall.

The idea of a European Prize for Literature is both simple and bold : to contribute to a better mutual understanding of the peoples of Europe through the iconic personalities of their contemporary culture, those who today like Victor Hugo in his time are a living symbol thereof. It is by putting a face on each European country, that of its most famous contemporary writer, that our countries will best be able to respect, and to understand each other.

JON FOSSE was born on 29 September 1959 on a remote farm near Haugesund, Norway. He has written novels, short stories, poetry, children’s books, essays and plays.

Fosse started writing very young. "Writing has been a way of surviving, he said. I created my own space in the world, a place where I felt safe. It’s a kind of escape" (The Guardian, 12/03/2014). He debuted in 1983 with the novel Raudt, svart (Red, black). He only turned to theatre in his mid-30s. His first play, Og aldri skal vi skiljast, was performed and published in 1994. His plays have sometimes been compared with works of Beckett or Pinter. “Pinter said his plays weren’t about lack of communication, but about too much communication. I would say the same : my people communicate without words. They already know what’s going to be said" (Ibid.).

LA BOURSE DE TRADUCTION 2014 DU PRIX EUROPÉEN DE LITTÉRATURE est attribuée à TERJE SINDING, né en 1945 à Stavanger, en Norvège, pour avoir donné une voix française à l’œuvre de Jon Fosse et pour ses travaux au service des littératures scandinaves. La cérémonie de remise du Prix aura lieu dans les salons de l’Hôtel de Ville de Strasbourg.

Terje Sinding, né à Stavanger en Norvège en 1945, vit en France depuis plus de 40 ans. Ayant reçu en 1969 une bourse d’État de l’université d’Oslo pour passer un an en France, il s’inscrit à l’Institut d’études théâtrales et suit les cours de Bernard Dort, spécialiste de Brecht. Sous sa direction, il rédige une thèse sur Henrik Ibsen. Les traductions qu’il donne d’extraits de pièces d’Ibsen ayant été saluées, il commence à traduire les douze dernières pièces d’Ibsen. LA LANGUE DE L’EUROPE, disait Umberto Eco, C’EST LA TRADUCTION. D’évidence, il ne peut y avoir de découverte mutuelle des cultures européennes sans le travail des traducteurs. Le rôle des traducteurs est fondamental et doit être reconnu et honoré comme tel. Tel est le sens de la Bourse de Traduction du Prix Européen de Littérature qui met en valeur le rôle éminent des traducteurs dans la transmission des œuvres littéraires à travers l’Europe et dans la construction d’une Europe de la littérature.

La Bourse de Traduction du Prix Européen de Littérature récompense le travail d’un traducteur grâce à qui une œuvre d’un écrivain européen de premier plan, en dépit des obstacles linguistique et culturels mais aussi des contraintes économiques et commerciales, peut accéder à une reconnaissance en l’une des deux langues officielles du Conseil de l’Europe, le français.
