Orgasm.com: Now that you’re more visible, your business savvy, you get yourself out there, what kind of advice would you give girls starting in porn today?

Kelly: The advice I would give to girls getting into porn today, as, you know, compared to 40 years ago is the landscape of the industry has changed so much. There’s a lot of free porn out there. There’s a lot of VOD (Video On Demand) and because of the Internet there’s so much of it out there, whether it’s free or paid.

A lot of girls get into the industry thinking that they’re going to be the next Jenna Jameson, and they’re going to be able to have a giant mansion and a limo and a gated property and be a super celebrity like how we see mainstream celebrities like Angelina Jolie. Unfortunately, that’s not the case anymore.

It’s the same consumer base. They’re paying less money. Because of that, a lot of the production companies aren’t making as much from porn as they used to. So especially with plus size girls, which is the bulk of who contacts me for advice because I’m there for them, is don’t treat it necessarily as a career. Get into it. Have as much fun as you can. Do the best that you can, and if that becomes a jumping point for something else, that can be really helpful.

There are a lot of girls that do web cams these days, or they sell their own movies. What I usually tell the girls is use the big name companies and their projects as a marketing tool. If you live in Montana or Kansas or any other non-giant metropolitan town or state, come into L.A., or New York, or Miami, those big cities that have a porn industry. L.A.’s the biggest one. Come in. Do the scenes for as long as you can. Then go home. Use the fact that these DVDs are coming out as a way for you to market to a larger audience. You might not be able to do just the regular web cam girl. A lot of girls, especially if they don’t live in L.A., they think it’s a lot like Hollywood. They get on that bus, or they get on that plane, and they come to Hollywood thinking they’re going to become a star, and unfortunately it’s just even more difficult to be one these days, especially in porn. It’s just easier not to have giant career aspirations. Get in. Have as much fun as you can and then use the money to further whatever else it is that you want to do.

Orgasm.com: Why did you initially start the PRSM Group?

Kelly: I started a company mainly because I had gotten bored. The easiest way to describe what I do is that I tend to; my Twitter definition says that I’m an intelligent hedonist, and the easier definition of that is that I’m the “bucket list girl.” You know, I’m forty years old now, and I’ve always been the kind of girl that wants to try everything that I find interesting, just so I can say I did it. The problem with social media is that a friend of mine had said “hey, you should try Twitter as a place to market some of your stuff.” This was back before Twitter was as popular as it is now, and I did I think, what most girls do when they first get on Twitter as an Adult performer. You have a bunch of naked photos, you talk about how horny you are all the time.  The problem is I am. I’m a very sexual person, but I’m not sexual 24/7.

In an environment like Twitter, you post a bunch of naked photos, and there are children who use Twitter. Throwing that in their face can be offensive. I’ve seen other girl’s Twitter accounts get shut down. I’ve taken a look at mine, and I realized that I didn’t really want to talk about having sex all the time, because that actually made it boring. Well, maybe not boring but not as exciting as actually having sex, because I’ve spent three days talking about it. So, I’ve kind of changed my entire outlook of how I was out there, and I’ve found that I’ve gained a different kind of crowd as a fan base.

People who actually wanted to talk to me and get to know me other than like my boobs. And, I was having more fun spending time on social media, so I figured, hey, you know, maybe I should talk about this and help some other girl with their marketing. Because, I’ve always been one of those people who like to share what I know, and so I started putting it out there. And then somebody said “Well, maybe you should charge for that.” I said, I’ll write the blog, because it’s good for my branding, but it’s also good information to share with people who are also getting in, you know, maybe a year or two after I did. Just kind of over time it became a consultation business, and now I help performers out from time to time, but most of my clientele are companies.

Orgasm.com: What separates your company from other consultation companies?

Kelly: I think most other companies, especially social media companies don’t touch Adult…There have been a lot of problems, especially with Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube with accounts getting shut down. I don’t really have a huge background in the mainstream space. I have a marketing degree, but I went from college straight into entertainment.

So, I understand entertainment marketing, but I don’t understand mainstream marketing such as a car company…So, that plus the time that I’ve been in Adult, and being a pornography consumer myself, kind allowed me to parlay that into consulting for companies, especially for companies who are starting out and who may not know anyone in the industry.

Our Industry is actually very small. It’s a lot smaller than people think. Everybody kind of knows each other once you’ve been in the industry long enough. So, when you’re a new company trying to get in, a lot of times people are wary of new people coming in, because they don’t know how reliable they are or how trustworthy they are, which is kind of funny because pornography is considered kind of an unreliable industry. So, not only do I do consultations and issue press releases. I’m not really a publicist, but I issue press releases on behalf of companies as part of the marketing campaign, but where I’m most helpful is my established network over the past six years.

I’m kind of more like a matchmaking service for companies. A company will come in and say, “we’re looking for some spokes models, and these are the kind of people we’re looking for, and so I can set that up. Or, an Adult porn company wants to come in and meet with vendors or buyers. I kind of end up being an introduction service for people.
