Dion takes a turn into hard-edged rock 'n' roll on this live album from 1996. Previously only available as a very limited bootleg recording, the songs You Move Me & King Of Hearts also appeared on the King Of The New York Streets 3-CD box set. Little Kings consisted of guitar/vocalist Dion, lead guitarist Scott Kempner (ex-Dictator & Del-Lord), drummer Frank Funaro (ex-Del-Lord) & bassist Mike Mesaros (ex-Smithereen). Dion delivers gritty, street-tough vocals & guitars backed by this tight & punchy rhythm section.
the more i listen to this cd, the more i like it. dion is backed by a lean, mean rock band (the drumming is top-notch) and the songs are more hard rock than do-wop, even when he is doing "King of the New York Streets or "You Move me". the overall sound reminds me of "eddie and the cruisers" band, with some echoes of zz top and the clash ( in other words, lots of edgy, guitar based rock n roll). the opening cut,"I'm Serious" is worth the price of the album by itself, and the lyrics to "Jo Jo's crazy are a joy to listen to. all 11 songs are good to great, and , in summary, this is one great cd to play in your car at highway speed.

The man certainly didn't receive his nick name" doo wop Sinatra" for this cut. Hard rock fans will reval over this fast moving, foot stomping set. For an old hand like me, it took some time to appreciate every cut on this cd. However, it's great! Maybe it's not Deja Nu, but it is the man with that attitude only he brings to music.I gave my grandson a copy of Deja Nu, and he plays Shu Bop constantly. When he received a copy of " Live in New York" he said to me, popa, is this Dion? Now he plays it constantly. So will you. Great cd, great sound, great attitude: Dion, what else can you say!

Live in New York City is Dion singing & playing with his group the Little Kings at the Mercury Lounge in 1996. The band includes members of the Del Lords & the Smithereens. Dion has never rocked harder than he did with the Little Kings (two guitars, bass & drums). This is the music of the mean streets of the Bronx. This music is not sugar coated. The expletives are not deleted. Dion sings of thugs and characters from the neighborhood. My favorite is "Jo Jo's Crazy". In that song Jo Jo thinks it's great that B.B. King named his guitar Lucille, so Jo Jo names his gun Daisy. There is also deep feeling in the songs such as "King of Hearts". A Dion concert favorite that he still performs in concert from this album is "You Move Me". you will be moved. I've been a Dion fan since "Runaround Sue" was released in 1961. This live album is NOT a greatest hits live. Most of the songs on this CD were written specifically for the Little Kings to perform. It's a shame it took over 5 years for a record company to release this wonderful album.

It is a little rough (commercial release was apparently never planned), but it is very, very good. Jo Jo may have been crazy but the song is a standout, as are In a Heartbeat of Time and King of Hearts.
I have reservations about Heartbreak Hill, but only with the lyrics, not the singing or the sound.
Put it in the car, turn the volume up, and the opening riff of I'm Serious will suck you right in. I guarantee you will take the long way home so you can hear it all the way through!

This is the best rock 'n' roll record that I have heard in years. How many of today's recording artists have one-one-hundredth his talent? I hope he keeps on recording and performing.

In hindsight, I can't believe it took me so long to get this. I can only echo the other great reviews of this killer live set from Dion, Scott Top Ten (sorry, Mr. Kempner, but you'll kind of always pop into my head as Top Ten - yes, I know that was a LONG time ago, but I'm kind of old), and company. Dion nearly always swings, this being no exception, but as others have noted, it rocks harder than virtually anything else he has done in his career. This is swaggering, rocker-bar-band stuff without a hint of nostalgia, and the singer is a simply a member of the band. Dion has always been an under-appreciated rock'n'roll singer and this only goes to elevate his case. The songs are tough, touching and mostly otherwise unavailable (and the version of You Move Me here gives it a much more raw feel than the studio version, as does this Drip Drop). If you even remotely think you ought to get the record - you owe it to yourself. Click buy right now.
