Cinder's infinite forced Nintendo to manually update 17,000 arcade cabinets: Did You Know Gaming? Killer Instinct ft. Maximilian

Posted by John 'Velociraptor' Guerrero • October 13, 2014 at 11:07 a.m. PDT

This video is fascinating!

Did You Know Gaming takes a look back at the history of the original Killer Instinct and offers some pretty interesting facts about the game's release and development.

The initial arcade release saw great success with some machines raking in over $1,000 weekly. People quickly discovered an infinite combo with Cinder and in order to retain relevance, Nintendo released a team to travel out and patch every last one of the 17,000 cabinets.

It's always fun to learn about character inspiration, difficulties in game development and the embarrassing mistakes that all sit behind the scenes of our favorite games.

Click the jump and learn a thing or two!

Who says history is boring? The "Did You Know Gaming" series is full of videos just like this.

I personally will be spending the rest of the day learning about Easter eggs and random trivia from my other favorite games.

Max got to be in Did you Know Gaming?

This isn't his first time, even.

I'd hate to be one of the guys travelling cross-country hunting down 17k cabinets.

Also Was checking out Orchid's previous name and that she was blonde. Horrible. Glad she is now a Brunette, And Orchid is a way better name.

!7,000 arcade machines??? Some of them were probably outside of the States, so the team needed to travel to every Arcade in the world for that? Wow, just wow.

But...Cinder's infinite was never removed, even in the final version of arcade KI1. He's famous for it. Here:

The glitch that allowed it was only fixed in the SNES version.

The patches did fix a lot of other issues but they never touched that one.

Orchid has black hair, not brown >.>

Searching a bit, it sounds like KI 1.5D (the last arcade version) did remove the infinite.

In the end of your video you guys said you used the 1.4 ROM for some of the combos.

Could it be possible the Cinder infinites were performed in the 1.4 ROM version?

Black haired women are sometimes referred to as brunettes as well.

All the clips of Cinder's infinite are from 1.5d.
I have a 1.5d machine in my living room, he can infinite just fine. (^.^)
In the vid, any combo with game audio is from 1.5d, because the emulator with 1.4 didn't have sound output at that time. Pretty much the only things we used 1.4 for are Orchid's combo-the-frog glitch, mini-Fulgore, and Spinal's infinite skulls juggle, those being the only notable non-crashy things that 1.5d actually fixed.

I was in my local arcade playing KI when the tech came in and installed the patch, and I remember before the patch cinder was called 'meltdown' and following the patch he was cinder. I thought there was some kind of patent on the name or something.

Cinder had some pretty neat names, though I am glad they stuck with Cinder in the end

I made a joke once about owning a KI arcade cabinet. So last week these guys were at my door, saying they needed to patch the Cinder infinite and that my machine was one of the last. It all makes sense now!

So maybe it's because that they didn't know that there was one more cabinet in your house. When did you bought that cabinet? Maybe that's explains the whole thing.

Mike_Z said on October 14, 2014 at 2:25 a.m.

I'm sure you're kidding, but I bought it about a year after KI2 came out. His infinite is in every version.

No I wasn't kidding, I thought that there were some cabinets that people bought them for private usage like you did, so maybe the they unaware of that. But if you bought yours after KI2 came out and that infinite is still there, then it's really weird.

"I miss the good old days when fighting games were released FINISHED with no DLC or patches. A COMPLETE game." - morons in the FGC in 2014 who clearly weren't around in the 90's.

Damn right, there were patches for the arcades and so many games had several updates until the final version (MK Trilogy was never released in the arcades though).

Haha I remember the Cinder infinite.

There was an arcade in my area where it wasn't patched. They would use that infinite. It was so dumb... anytime we saw anyone pulling it off against the cpu in arcade mode, no one would bother playing against the person because of how dumb it was. You wouldn't even get to play if he got that one hit on you.

I never said brown. Brunette "black or dark haired" whatever. In spanish the word brunette "morena" is geared more towards black hair. But you get the point.
