Interview: Lucy Rose – “‘Work It Out’ Shows My Development As A Person”

Lucy-Rose-2015-Interview

Following the release of her debut album ‘Like I Used To’ in 2012, Lucy Rose has spent the last several years touring with headline and festival performances as well as working on her sophomore release, ‘Work It Out’, which is available from July 6th 2015 through .

Lucy Rose’s ‘Work It Out’ was recorded in London’s Snap Studios and produced by Rich Cooper, notable for his work alongside Mumford & Sons and Tom Odell. The record features 13 tracks, which includes her single ‘Our Eyes’ and the recently revealed track ‘Like An Arrow’.

Ahead of the release, Lucy Rose will be performing at a string of UK festivals including Communion Records’ multi-venue one-day event Bushstock. Inveterate sat down with the singer-songwriter to discuss her new single, what we should expect from the album, and what encourages her to sell tea at her own gigs. This is what she had to say:

First of all, congratulations on the premiere of your new track ‘Like An Arrow’. How does it feel putting new music out to the public again?

It feels really exciting putting new music out. It’s been a while but I feel ready and it really does feel like the right time, but in all honesty it’s time to be judged again as a musician which is always a little terrifying.

It is already Annie Mac’s “Hottest Record in the World”, are you surprised with the critical support you’ve already got?

Always. It’s great getting support from people that you respect highly and talking to Annie Mac about the song and hearing it on the radio felt like a real moment.

The track follows your single release, ‘Our Eyes’, how do you feel your forthcoming album, ‘Work It Out’, compares to its predecessor?

Yeah, I feel really really excited about it. I wouldn’t be releasing the record if I didn’t feel proud of it and I have taken my time over the writing process to make sure it really is as good as it can possibly be. It hasn’t been plain sailing but I feel like I’ve pushed myself further than I ever had. It’s a very different record from the first, mostly because my confidence has been greater to try new things on this record and trust my instincts. I love the first record but I feel like this one shows my development as a person.

The album is coming out July 6th, during festival season, are you excited to be taking your new offerings to the summer circuit?

Absolutely, especially once the album is out. I’m excited to be playing to people who know the record and can sing along with me.

Your live performances are unique with the fact that your merchandise includes your own brand of tea. What inspired this decision?

I just really like tea and that certain type of tea, which is a mix of English Breakfast and Earl Grey. It was nearly 4 years ago that I started selling tea, way before I had any music to sell, but really it’s just meant to be something different and delicious to drink.

Talking of live shows, you make a pit stop in London for Bushstock 2015 that sees you accompanied by Michael Kiwanuka, Villagers, and many more. What should people expect from your festival date?

I guess a lot of new music and fun. I’m really enjoying playing all the new songs and of course now I’m off the stool I’m enjoying interacting with my band mates on stage more.

Are there any acts you’re looking forward to checking out yourself at the festival?

I’m really looking forward to seeing Sophie Jamieson play, I saw her a while ago at The Sebright Arms and she blew me away.

Following your album release and summer touring, what lies next in store for Lucy Rose?

Touring I hope, and as much of it as possible. I’m heading to Europe in September and then UK in October and November.

Our final question, what acts are you listening to at the moment?

I’m listening to The Tallest Man On Earth’s new record, and I love it.
