Review Written by: Laura Chambers

Her name may not be immediately familiar to you if you don’t read the booklets that come with your CDs. But Mia Fieldes is no stranger to the music business; she has written for and with more well known names, such as Matt Maher, Francesca Battistelli and Hillsong. Ashes is her first foray alone, though not completely so, because all the songs on this EP are co-written.

“Ashes” pictures God bringing charred remnants of a heart utterly destroyed back to life. What can you say to someone who has taken your hopelessness and brought joy, peace, life? Only worship. Mia’s soft childlike voice reaches for heaven in pure elation. “Fearless” blends a declaration with a prayer in this bold stand, a reminder that we can only truly be strong when we admit our vulnerabilities and let God take control. We must remember that wherever we find ourselves, God is there already, on our side and ready to fight for us. “Live And Breathe” expresses the realization that all the fulfillment and meaning we try to find in life can only be found in God. To be in His presence is to be complete, to have perfect assurance that He will come through for us. It might have worked better as a slow song, though. “If I Have You” crosses off all the fruitless promises and crutches from the list of needs until only Jesus is left. If we cling to our possessions and vain philosophies with a vice grip, or base our trust on already knowing the answers (which doesn’t make any sense when you think about it; faith that is seen is not faith), we are missing out on all the wonderful ways He wants us to experience Him. This is my favorite track from the EP. Lastly, “Christ Is Risen” calls us to rise up likewise from our sinful state and call on His name for salvation and spiritual resurrection. Because He turned Death’s gun on itself and fired, we can experience awakening, free from the chains that bound us.

What can I say about Ashes? As a lover of expressive writing, I can see Mia Fieldes’ gratitude for grace shining through in this pleasant set of songs, reminding us of His promises and provisions in this season of new life.
