2 Hours Of Hawaiian Airport Action @ HNL & OGG, April 6, 2005
This review is from: Hawaii Airports DVD
Get up close and personal with almost 200 different commercial airliners by popping in this 2-hour DVD from "Just Planes Videos" (of Boston, Massachusetts, USA).
Since 1992, "Just Planes, Inc." has been providing videos and DVDs filmed at airports all over the world. (Plus hundreds of "in-the-cockpit" programs in their "World Air Routes" and "Flight In The Cockpit" series of VHS videotapes and DVDs.)
This DVD is titled "U.S. Airports Volume #50" and features crisp Digital footage filmed at two airports in the 50th U.S. state -- Hawaii. This was the first Airport DVD ever released by "JPV", in 2001. The company produced 49 previous "U.S. Airport" titles on the VHS format (plus 66 "International Airport" titles on VHS as well, featuring non-USA aerodromes).
Since this "Hawaii" volume was made available, JPV has issued several more Airport DVDs, which are all perfect for plane-watchers who can't get to the airport in person. (Not to mention the fact that the words "Observation Deck" have practically disappeared entirely at most airports [especially within the U.S.], in the post-9/11 aviation environment.)
Additional airports that have been filmed by JPV's aircraft-probing cameras in recent years include London's Heathrow Airport; "LAX" in Los Angeles; Beijing; Miami; the two main Chicago airports (O'Hare and Midway); Fort Lauderdale; Amsterdam; and the "big 3" New York City airfields (JFK, LGA, and EWR); plus several other airports as well.
This "Hawaii Airports" program begins with footage taken right beside the runway at Maui's "Kahului Airport" (IATA code: "OGG"), which is located on the northern edge of the land bridge between Haleakala and the West Maui Mountain Range on the Hawaiian island of Maui. The airport occupies 1,391 acres of land and is located three miles east of the town of Kahului. The airport has two intersecting runways.
The bulk of this 120-minute presentation was filmed at Honolulu's International Airport ("HNL"). Honolulu International is the major aviation gateway for the State of Hawaii. It is one of three airports in the state of Hawaii that accommodates international flights. The Airport occupies 2,216 acres of land and 2,210 acres of water, and rests about three miles west of Downtown Honolulu, and seven miles from Waikiki. The airfield consists of two parallel east-west runways and two parallel crosswind runways.
This DVD enables the viewer to sit right next to the active runways and taxiways at both HNL and OGG, while watching a total of 188 aircraft (belonging to 36 different airlines) in action. You'll see 101 takeoffs and 36 separate landings on this program.
Some of the airliners you'll find on this DVD include ..... American Airlines DC-10; United Airlines Boeing 747s; FedEx MD-11; Korean Air Boeing 747; gobs of Boeing 737s of Aloha Airlines; Air Transat Lockheed L-1011; plus many different Japan Airlines Boeing 747 Jumbos.
Video format for this disc is Full-Frame (1.33:1). Audio is in rich-sounding Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo. No narration is provided; but none is really required on this kind of "airplane-gazing" program, IMO. Per the company's name -- it's "Just Planes". And the planes are the stars of the show here, with a gorgeous Hawaiian setting as a backdrop.
Can't afford to visit a bunch of the world's airports you've always wanted to see? No problem -- just pick up some DVDs and/or Videos produced by "Just Planes Videos". They bring the airport to you.
